12 4.1 WATER QUALITY In order to prevent limescale from damaging and clogging the interior of your machine, it is important to fill the water reservoir with soft water. You can test the hardness of your water using simple test strips. The target water hardness for espress machines is less than 50 parts per million (ppm) or 3 grains per gallon (gpg). If your results are high you can high-quality carbon filter or charcoal filtration system to soften the water. IMPORTANT NOTE: Do not use distilled or deionized (reverse osmosis) filtered water in any espresso machine. This type of water cannot be detected by the components and causes serious malfunction of the equipment. If using bottled water in your machine, check that the mineral content is less than 50ppm and ensure that the label doesn't say the water is distilled or deionized. 4.2 WATER SOFTENER A softener is included with the machine. Remove the softener from the protective packaging. Rinse the softener under cold water. Place the softener on the bottom of the reservoir and fill with water. Please check softener packaging for further instructions including expected life of the softener. 11
13 5. FILLING THE WATER TANK Remove the drip tray (7). Then remove the container (8) and fill it with cold drinking water. Fit in the water tank (8), pushing it in as far as it will go, and place the drip tray (7). WARNING! 14 Press and hold down the buttons ON/OFF (E) and hot water delivery (C) together until water begins to come out of the delivery group. During this stage, the control lights to signal no water (H) and the power control light (D) will flash and the pump will operate. Release the buttons ON/OFF (E) and hot water delivery (C) to stop the boiler filling cycle. The appliance will automatically return to Stand-by mode. 6. SWITCHING ON THE MACHINE Press and hold down the button ON / OFF (E) for about 3 seconds; the red control light (D) will go from flashing to lit to show that the appliance has been switched on; at the same time, the control lights from 85 C will 120 C switch on for about one second (electronic system check). The control light for the set temperature value will start to flash to indicate that the coffee delivery group is heating up and the automatic boiler refill will be activated until the water level set by the manufacturer has been reached. Once the filling stage is complete, the boiler control light (D) will begin to flash, indicating that the boiler is heating up. The first time that the machine is switched on, this will not be enabled until the group reaches the set temperature. Attach the orta ilter (4) to the group ea. Wait until the appliance reaches the set temperature, making sure that the control lights on the control panel (I) switch on progressively as the temperature increases. This starts as soon as the temperature reaches the minimum setting, with the switching ON of the control light 85 C, and it will proceed until the appliance operating temperature has been reached (the control light goes from flashing to lit). When the group reaches the set temperature, the boiler heating function is enabled. Once it reaches the set temperature, the control light will stay lit. 12
15 Every time that the temperature of the group or boiler drops below the set temperature, the control light for the operating temperature will start to flash (appliance heating phase), until the set temperature is reached. The appliance is now ready for use. WARNING! The boiler is activated by pressing the button BOILER (G). To deactivate the boiler, press and hold down the same button for 3 seconds.
