1 Book Club Assignment Welcome to your new book club group. Your group will be studying the same book. You will be given class time to read; as well, you will be responsible to read at home. There will be a required number of pages which you must read independently before each of your meetings and you will have a meeting assignment to complete for each meeting. These will be passed in for evaluation after each book club meeting. There will be four meetings in total. You will also complete an individual final assignment AS you read the book and submit this when your book is finished. What emotion did the story evoke in you as a reader? Consider the ending. Did you expect it or were you surprised? Was it too neatly concluded? Was it unresolved? 7. Discuss, in your group, the book in general. You have now completed the 4 group meetings for your book. 13 Individual Final Book Club Assignment Complete this assignment sheet independently AS you are reading the book. This is not to be done collaboratively as a group. Your answers, therefore, should not be the same as your group members! Complete the assignment and attach it to this sheet before submitting to the teacher. Number appropriately. Write neatly in ink. Date: Reading for Detail: Copy the first sentence of the book. Comment on the effectiveness of this sentence. Copy the last sentence of the book. Comment on the effectiveness of this sentence. Copy one sentence from the book that uses a semicolon. Give page reference. Using that sentence as a model, construct an original sentence using a semicolon. Copy a sentence from the book containing a simile, metaphor, or personification. Give the page reference. What is the author trying to do in this sentence? Is it effective? Copy an example of dialogue from the book. Give page reference. What is the author s purpose in using dialogue in this section? What does the dialogue reveal? Notice the punctuation in the dialogue. Using the above dialogue excerpt as a model, write a short original dialogue using necessary punctuation correctly. Copy three sentences from the book which are strong examples of imagery. What is the author s purpose in using imagery? Is it effective writing? Why? Copy three sentences from the book which are strong examples of characterization. What is the author s purpose in using characterization? Is it effective writing? Why? 7. Summarize the entire plot of this book in 10 sentences. 8. Keep a list of vocabulary words and their meanings you have had to learn in order to understand this book. Explain what strategies you use when you encounter an unfamiliar word in your reading?
