1 Electromotive Systems Electromotive Fiber Optic Cable Application Bulletin #: A Electromotive Fiber-Optic Cable For use with closed-loop vector crane control systems (IMPULSE VG+ Series 2) Introduction Reasonable care must be taken when connecting and routing power and control cables near encoder circuits on any crane or hoist. Radiated noise from power and control circuits, relays, transformers, or other electronic equipment may be induced into the encoder signal circuits causing unwanted signal pulses, leading to fault conditions and nuisance trips. Electromotive Systems recommended wiring practice to-date has been to use twisted-pair shielded cable (Belden 9730 (#22 AWG), Brandrex #T or equivalent). Twisted-pair cable runs are limited to approximately 300 feet, and where possible should run continuous without splice. Where continuous runs are not feasible, twisted-pair cables should be spliced in separate terminal boxes. In addition, these encoder signals must be routed in separate conduits and isolated from other power and control cables on festoon systems. Electromotive F-16/12S (#16 AWG) or F-14/12-IS (#14 AWG) flat, single-shielded cables may be used instead of the twisted-pair, shielded cable, but require the same isolation described above. These cables consist of twelve independently shielded wires (six parallel pairs), and can be used to connect two encoders to their respective drives. Wires used for each channel should be adjacent to each other (A+, A-, B+, B-, etc.). Each wire is independently shielded. Jacket is black PVC and provided with built-in strip cords. Cable is rated for 105 C and 600V, and is UL listed and CSA Certified. Electromotive Systems R-22/6 round, double-shielded encoder cables consists of three pairs of twisted AWG #22 wires. Each pair is independently shielded and is provided with a drain wire. The cable bundle is protected by an outer shield and a black Hypalon jacket. This cable provides improved noise immunity over the twisted-pair, shielded (Belden 9730) cable. It may be run with control circuits but requires isolation from power circuits. Cable is rated for 90 C and 300V, and is UL Listed and CSA Certified. The diameter of this cable is.388. Fiber-Optic Encoder Cable Systems Electromotive Fiber-Optic Cable virtually eliminates the noise problems associated with encoder wiring. These cables may be combined with other power and control wiring without isolation or shielding. The range of fiber-optic cables is virtually unlimited to 1,000 feet or more. Cable is rated for 20 to +80 C. In a typical system, a fiber-optic transmitter module is mounted on the crane trolley near the encoder. This transmitter is connected to a receiver module by means of a fiber-optic cable assembly. The receiver module is mounted near the IMPULSE VG+ Series 2 Flux Vector Crane Control in the control panel on the bride, or in a separate junction box near the control enclosure in certain retrofit applications. Electromotive Fiber-Optic Cable is available in flat configuration. A splice module is available for mounting at the end of the bridge. This allows easy replacement of the festooned cable as new cables do not have to be pulled through the conduit or wiring trough.
2 Fiber-Optic Cables Fiber-optic cables consist of four glass fibers reinforced by Kevlar strength member, and four #14 AWG copper wires, each individually protected by PVC jackets and encased in a heavy outer PVC jacket. Two fibers and two #14 wires are needed for each encoder, so a single run of fiber-optic cable could be used to connect two encoders to their drives. For single-encoder applications, the extra fibers and wires can be used as spares. The ST type fiber-optic connectors are provided pre-assembled, so exact lengths must be determined at time of purchase. Electromotive Systems can normally furnish replacement assemblies within 24 hours. Transmitter Module 110 VAC AC power is fed to the transmitter from the bridge using two of the #14 copper wires in the fiber-optic cable. The transmitter contains a power supply which converts the 110 VAC power to 12 VDC to operate the encoder and 5 VDC to operate the transmitter s on-board electronics. The transmitter circuitry converts the 12 VDC encoder signal to optical signals. The transmitter components are mounted in a NEMA 12/4 enclosure (8 H x 6 W x 4 D). The transmitter includes ST type connectors for the fiber-optic circuits, terminals for the power input, and ten feet of R-20/6 round double shielded cable for connection of the encoder. An optional duplex transmitter is available for the operation of two encoders. Receiver Module The receiver module contains a pair of fiber-optic receivers. These receivers feed digital outputs to differential driver circuitry for connection to the PGX card on the inverter. The receiver includes ST type connectors for the fiber-optic circuit, a small power supply to convert 12 VDC from the IMPULSE VG+ Series 2 Flux Vector Crane Control to 5VDC to run the on-board electronics, two ST type connectors and a short piece of cable for connection to the PGX card on the drive.
3 Electromotive Fiber-Optic Cable Features and Benefits Electromotive Fiber-Optic Cable is the best alternative for closing the loop with our IMPULSE VG+ Series 2 Flux Vector Crane Controls. Fiber-optic technology meets and beats the communication challenges of overhead cranes with very long runs and/or environments with undesirable electrical noise. A typical Electromotive Fiber-Optic Cable system includes a fiber-optic transmitter module mounted in a NEMA 12/4 enclosure; ST type connectors of the fiber-optic circuits; terminals for the power inputs; R-206/6 round double shielded cable for connection between the encoder and the transmitter, fiber-optic cable for transmission between the transmitter and the receiver; a receiver module with ST type connectors for the fiber-optic circuit; and cable for connection to the PGX card on the drive. Fiber-optics virtually eliminate the noise problems often associated with encoder wiring. Cables may be combined with other power and control wiring without isolation or shielding. The run length of fiber-optic cable is essentially unlimited-to 1000 feet or more, compared with a maximum of 300 feet for most twisted-pair, shielded cables. Electromotive Fiber-Optic Cable is rated for 20 to 80 C. Fiber-optic cable consists of four glass fibers reinforced by Kevlar strength members and four #14 AWG copper wires, each individually protected by PVC jackets and encased in an outer PVC jacket with strip cords for easy conductor access. (Two fibers and two wires are used for each encoder.) An optional duplex transmitter is available for operation of two encoders. A single run of cable can handle transmission of data for up to two encoders. Fiber-optic connectors are secured to cable at our facility to ensure smooth on-site installation. An optional splice module is available for mounting at the end of a bridge for easy replacement of cable.
