Memory Verse: 1 Samuel 15:22B 3:45 4:00 CHECK IN / SNACKS / GAMES: One teacher take control of sign-in: One tag will go on the child, another will go on the clipboard, and one will be used for checkout. Just place the Pick Up sticker on the clipboard to check the child out. If someone is new to the church or not in our database they can fill out a guest tag. Please make sure that you get their phone number in case we need to contact them and any special instructions for the care of their child. (On the back of the coloring sheet) INTRO ACTIVITY: Simon Says Play a version of Simon Says. Select a preschooler to be king. The king will call out various actions for the rest of the group to perform. When the king says, The king says, before calling out an action, preschoolers should perform the action. If the king does not say, The king says, before calling out an action, preschoolers should not perform the action. After a few rounds, select a new king and play again. Say: We are continuing to learn about Israel s first king, King Saul. The people were supposed to listen to the king. But it was King Saul s responsibility to listen and obey God. Keep an eye on them and the door for more kids. 4:50 5:00 CRAFT: Craft: Obedience bag Items needed: printout of heart, paper bag, crayons, glue, strips of paper Instructions: (1) Give each child a printout of a heart and have them color it and write the memory verse on it. (2) Have each child cut out the heart and glue it to the paper bag. 3) Give each child strips of paper. Have them write ways to be obedient on them and things they may be struggling with. (Ex: A way to be obedient is listening the first time. Something I struggle with is lying.) Say: God is King over the world, and He is in charge. Saul did not obey God that is sin. God rejected Saul as king because of his sin. No earthly king is able to obey God perfectly. We have learned that it is better to obey God than to sacrifice. 5:00 5:10 BIBLE STORY REVIEW: Story: Read the bible story found in the Action Bible on pages Say: Saul thought his disobedience would not matter to God if he saved some of the best animals for sacrifice. Tell them to put their hands behind their back until you ask the question. The first person to hit the buzzer gets to answer the question. Award team 10 points if the person answers correctly, if incorrect then the other team can steal the points. Pick new people each question. Review Where was Saul while he waited for Samuel? (Gilgal) How long did Saul wait for Samuel? (seven days) What would God have done had Saul waited for Samuel? (established Saul s kingdom forever) Did Saul know that he disobeyed God? (No, Saul thought he had obeyed God s commandment) What happened to Samuel s cloak? (Saul tore it when he tried to keep Samuel from leaving) Say: It is better to obey God. Discussion Questions: Small Group Time The Goal is to get them talking about the lesson. Split the room up into 2 groups and each leader ask the questions giving time for a few kids to answer. 1. What did you learn about God from today s story? 2. What did you learn about people/yourself? 3. What is one thing you learned from this lesson that you can apply this week? Say: It is better to obey God. 5:20 5:25 UNIT MEMORY VERSE: Review with the entire group. *Use the Memory Verse sheet located in the teacher aid section of the bin. 5:25 ENDING ACTIVITY / PARENT ARRIVAL: As the parents arrive Ending Activity: Form two teams of kids, preferably with an adult leader in each group. Assign one group to make a list of things that are ways to obey. Assign the other group to make a list of things that are disobedient. Allow the groups to compare their lists when they are done. Examples: Stealing Listening the first time Not cleaning your room Wearing your seatbelt Say: God said the Israelites should destroy everything that belonged to the Amalekites, even the animals. But Saul kept the best cattle, sheep, and animals. Saul disobeyed God, so he could not be king anymore. It is better to obey God than to sacrifice. Gospel Project Unit 10.2

Saul disobeyed God, offering a sacrifice that only a priest should offer. God rejected Saul as king because of his sin. The Israelites were outnumbered. They were all afraid; some of them hid. Saul wanted to ask God for help. Maybe if he made an offering to God, they would win the battle. But only the priests were allowed to give offerings to God. Saul waited for Samuel, but Samuel did not come. Saul decided to make an offering to God himself. Then Samuel showed up. Saul, what are you doing? Samuel asked. I wanted to ask for God s help before we went into battle Saul replied. You have disobeyed God, Samuel said. You will not be king much longer. God is going to find someone obedient to be king. Some time later, God wanted Saul to attack the Amalekites. God said to kill all of the people and all of the animals. So Saul and his army fought the Amalekites. They won, but they did not destroy everything like God commanded. Saul only destroyed the worthless things and things he didn t want. Samuel confronted Saul. I did obey Him! Saul argued. I only saved the best animals to sacrifice to the Lord. You rejected His instruction, so God has rejected you as king. Saul admitted his sin and pleaded for forgiveness. God was sorry He had made Saul the king of Israel. Christ Connection: King Saul sinned by giving a sacrifice that only the priest was allowed to give. God rejected Saul as king, but He had a plan to send His Son, Jesus. King Jesus gave up His own life as a good and perfect sacrifice so sinners would be forgiven and accepted LifeWay

Key Passage: 1 Samuel 15:22 Lesson: Go over Classroom Rules: Play the Intro-Video Timeline View: Do you remember King Saul? Let s look at our timeline. Last week we learned that Israel demanded a king, and God chose Saul as Israel s first king. Will someone please read the title for today s story? [Allow a volunteer to read.] Hmm rejected? That s a pretty harsh word. Do you know what rejected means? [Invite a volunteer to explain what rejected means in her own words.] In just a few moments, we ll learn what Saul did to be rejected as king. Main Point: That leads us to our main point: We can obey God. Show the MainPoint Everyone say that with me (Have them repeat the MAIN Point) Very interesting! Let s take a look at how he did this! Bible Story: Play the Bible Story Video: What a sad story! Last week, Saul had a bright and exciting future ahead of him as the first king of Israel. What do you think changed about Saul from last week s story to today s story? [Allow children to think and respond.] Actually, if we look closely, not much changed at all. Think back to our last story. Where was Saul when Samuel was ready to announce him as king? He was hiding! He was scared! The same thing happened this week. When it seemed that all his men were leaving the army, Saul panicked and didn t wait for Samuel. Saul thought if he offered the sacrifice, the men would stay. He didn t trust in God s timing. In the second part of our story, Saul told Samuel he didn t obey God s command because he was afraid of the people. He gave in to what the people wanted instead of trusting God. King Saul sinned by giving a sacrifice that only the priest was allowed to give. Saul even tried to make excuses for his sin, claiming that he just wanted to offer sacrifices to God. But Samuel told Saul that God cares more about obedience than about sacrifices. God rejected Saul as king because of his sin, but He had a plan. Many years later, God sent the perfect king: Jesus! Jesus obeyed God perfectly. Jesus became our perfect sacrifice to take away our sin. When we trust in Jesus He becomes King of our lives. He forgives us of all our sin and gives us eternal life! We continue to show God how much we love Him by obeying His Word. King Jesus gave up His own life as a good and perfect sacrifice so sinners would be forgiven and accepted. 8 Play the Discussion Starter Video: God wants our hearts to be obedient to Him. He wants us to obey because we trust in Him and believe that He loves us. However, we cannot obey perfectly. That s why God sent Jesus! Jesus obeyed perfectly. When He died on the cross and rose again, He made the only way for us to be forgiven and made new. God doesn t want us to make excuses for why we disobey. Instead, God wants us to trust in Jesus so the Holy Spirit will teach us to obey. 9 Bible Story: Video Saul was king over Israel. He gathered an army and took some of the men into the hill country. The Philistines, enemies of Israel, were in the land. Saul s son Jonathan took some other men to destroy a Philistine army camp. The attack made the Philistines mad! The Philistines came out to fight the Israelites. They had more chariots, more horses, and more soldiers. The Israelites were outnumbered. They were all afraid; some of them hid. Saul wanted to ask God for help. Maybe if he made an offering to God, they would win the battle. But only the priests were allowed to give offerings to God. Saul waited for Samuel, but Samuel did not come.
