Build interest by asking questions such as the following: What do firefighters wear? What special tools or equipment do they use? Read the title to the children and talk with them about the cover photo. Introduce the Text Guide children through the text helping with unfamiliar words so they can read the text successfully. Here are some suggestions: Page 2: In this book some children are telling what they can see when they visit a fi re station on a class trip. Suggested Language: Turn to page 2. What do the children do and see on the fi rst page? Yes, they take a trip to the fi re station and they look at the boots. The children say: We take a trip. We look at the boots. Say the word take. What letter would you expect to see fi rst in the word take? Find the word take and put your fi nger under it. Page 3: Turn to page 3. What do the children say they can look at here? They say: We look at the coats. We do a lot. Say the word do. What letter would you expect to see fi rst in do? Find the word do and put your fi nger under it. Page 4: Turn to page 4. What can the children do on this page? Page 5: What do they do on this page? How do they help with the hose? Now turn back to the beginning and read about all the things the children do and see on their trip to the fi re station. Have children turn to the at the back of the book. Read each word aloud and then together. Explain any unknown words. 3 Read Now have children read softly while pointing under each word. Observe children as they read. Respond to the Text Personal Response Invite children to share their personal responses to the text. Begin by asking what they liked best about the book, or what they found interesting. Suggested language: What would you most like to see at a fire station? Why? Ways of Thinking As you discuss the text, make sure children understand these teaching points: Thinking Within the Text Thinking Beyond the Text Thinking About the Text A group of children visit a fire station. The narrator tells what they see: boots, coats, hats, the hose, and the truck. It is fun and exciting to visit a fire station. Firefighters have special clothing and equipment. Choices for Support Concepts of Print Practice early reading behaviors such as loing the first and last letters of each word on a page of text. Phonemic Awareness and Word Work Provide practice as needed with words and sounds, using one of the following activities: Rhyming Words Have children listen for words that rhyme. Have children raise their hands if the words rhyme, and keep their hands in their laps if the words do not rhyme. Say words from the story paired with another word, for example, boots/fl utes; hats/s; truck/train; hose/nose; boot/moon; truck/duck; hat/lip; coat/boat. Alphabet Search Materials: magnetic or cardboard letters or letter cards. Have children search for and loe letters by name. Matching Letters Materials: upper and lower case magnetic or cardboard letters or letter cards. 4 Writing About Reading Vocabulary Practice Read the directions and have children complete the Vocabulary questions on BLM Responding Have children complete the vocabulary activities on page 7. Building Vocabulary Fighting Fires Build on the words related to firefighters and their gear in. Suggested language: Let s think about all the things we might see when firefighters are at work. What are some things you might see? Would you see a ladder? As children make suggestions, write their words and sentences on the board or on a large strip of paper. Begin the list with: We see the. (Possible suggestions: pole, engine, tires, ax, equipment, tools, pumper, fire hydrant, fire chief, flames, smoke, fire, water) After children have made their suggestions, read the list aloud together, pointing to each word. These are things we would see when firefighters are at work. Writing Prompt Read aloud the following prompt. Have children draw and write their response, using the writing prompt on page 6. 5 English Language Learners Cultural Support Fighting fires is a concern all around the globe. Talk with children about fire fighters and fire fighting equipment in their country of origin. While clothing or equipment may differ, the work and its importance are similar everywhere. Oral Language Development Check the children s comprehension, using a dialogue that best matches their English proficiency level. Speaker 1 is the teacher, Speaker 2 is the child.
