5 V MSP Safety and Operational Guidelines DANGER This symbol identifies situations that endanger people, property, and/or equipment. If such conditions exist, the equipment must be shut down and all energy sources (electrical, gas, and pneumatic) must be disconnected, purged, and locked out until the problem is resolved. Never attempt to bypass or defeat any safety device. Do not attempt to operate the equipment if any safety device is not functioning properly, or if any doubt exists about proper operation of safety devices. The product described in this publication may operate at high speed and contain numerous moving parts. It may employ natural gas or propane, mechanical or pneumatic forces, and/or hazardous voltages, and may create other conditions that could, through misuse, abuse, unauthorized alteration or retrofitting, inattention, or lack of understanding, result in injury, death, or damage to the product or to other equipment. In addition, improper operation may also depreciate the value of the machine and other assets of the owner, and impair the working efficiency of the machine. Energy Sources M&R equipment may use one of more of the following energy sources: Compressed Air (Pneumatic Energy) Electricity Gas (Natural Gas or Propane) Each form of energy presents its own unique hazards and requires appropriate precautions. Danger From Compressed Air (Pneumatic Energy) Only qualified personnel should be allowed to work on pneumatic components or assemblies. Before work is started on pneumatic components or assemblies, equipment should be disconnected from the air supply and all pneumatic lines should be purged to prevent accidental operation of pneumatic assemblies. All pneumatic pipes and hoses should be checked frequently for damage and wear. Danger From Electrical Energy Only qualified personnel should have access to electrical enclosures or work on electrical systems, and enclosures should be locked when not in use. Electrical equipment should be checked regularly. WARNING Failure to follow safety and maintenance procedures or to take appropriate corrected action when required can result in severe or fatal personal injuries, property damage, and/or damage to the equipment. 6 MSP 3140 V Management Responsibilities Management Responsibilities 1. Ensure that this equipment is used only for the purposes set forth in the Defined Purpose section of this manual 2. Ensure that all employees involved with the operation of this equipment or working near it read, understand, and act in accordance with the operational and safety standards set forth in this manual, including the Operator Responsibilities listed below. 3. Ensure that all recommended preventive maintenance is carried out according to M&R guidelines. 4. Should any problem arise which compromises the safe operation or normal functioning of this equipment, ensure that the equipment is immediately shut down, sources of power to the equipment are shut off and secured, and that personnel not trained to repair and directly involved in repairing the equipment are removed from the immediate area and not allowed to return until the equipment has been returned to a safe and fully-functional condition. 5. Provide, and compel use of, any personal protection devices that may be required for the safe operation of this equipment 6. Make no modification to equipment or equipment software without written approval from M&R 7. 7 V MSP Operator Responsibilities Operator Responsibilities Note: Operator Responsibilities pertain to all employees who work on or near the equipment; this includes, but is not limited to those who clean, maintain and repair the equipment as well as those who operate it. In general, all those who work on or near the equipment have a duty to use reasonable and ordinary care for their own safety when in the vicinity of the machine. Failure to use reasonable and ordinary care subjects people and property to serious personal injury and/or death and to destruction of personal and/or company property. M&R expressly disclaims any and all liability, whether in contract, tort or by statute, for damages, whether in the nature of personal injury/death and/or property damage, and whether direct, indirect, consequential or incidental, as a result of a failure to use reasonable and ordinary care. 1. Ensure that this equipment is used only for the purposes set forth in the Defined Purpose section of this manual 2. Read, understand, and act in accordance with the safety and operational standards and guidelines set forth in this manual 3. Install and maintain the equipment and safety devices in accordance with this manual; this includes checking the equipment and safety devices for external or visible damage at least once per shift, and making sure all safety and danger notices are in place and in readable condition 4. Make no modification to equipment or equipment software without written approval from M&R 5. Ensure that all other employees working on or near this equipment are knowledgeable in its safe operation, and closely supervise inexperienced employees; keep bystanders away from the equipment 6. Make sure the area around the equipment is clear and free of obstructions, clean up spills immediately, and remove ink and other contaminants at the end of each shift 7. Ensure that any and all safety guards (including but not limited to safety bar, foot switch, yellow cycle interruption cords, infrared safety beam, yellow floor mats, or hand switches) provided with this equipment for the purpose of protecting personnel by automatically stopping the equipment are in place and are not removed, disabled or rendered ineffective during operation 8. Wear any personal protection devices required for the safe operation of this equipment 9. Avoid wearing anything that could become entangled in moving parts; for example, but not by way of limitation, tie back, pin up, or cover long hair 10. Do not attempt to operate this equipment if you are sick, fatigued, or under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs including, but not limited to, prescriptions and overthe-counter medications that warn against the operation of equipment 11. Avoid standing on any part of the equipment not intended for that purpose 12. Immediately shut down the equipment, disconnect and lock out all sources of power (electrical, gas, and/or pneumatic); and purge all lines under pressure if the equipment fails to be fully operational or if any safety device fails to operate properly, and ensure that the equipment stays offline until the safety device is again operational 13. Perform and document preventive maintenance at intervals described in the Operator s Manual 14. M&R encourages the use of a licensed electrician for the installation of electrical service to this equipment. The equipment must be electrically grounded in accordance with local codes, or in the absence of local codes, with the National Electrical Code ANSI/NFPA 70 Latest Edition. 2. Exposure unit must not be installed or stored in an area where is will be exposed to water and/or weather. DANGER: Electrical power should be disconnected when working on this unit. Do not operate this unit with the power supply cover removed. DANGER: Never look at the lamp when it is on. Inspection Carefully inspect crates for signs of damage in transit. If equipment has been damaged in transit, notify the Freight Forwarder immediately. M&R is not responsible for damage that occurs during transportation. 12 MSP 3140 V Assembly Instructions Assembly 1. Place a level on unit s glass surface. Adjust leveling pads to level unit front to back and side to side. 2. Plug unit into appropriate voltage receptacle. Checking Voltage The MSP 3140 has been designed to operate at voltages of , 60 Hz for 120V units; and , 50 Hz or 60 Hz for 240V units. The unit has been factory set to 120V or 240V in accordance with your order. To determine the proper setting within the volt range, turn on the vacuum pump and light for 2 minutes (see Controls and Operation) to program the controller. At the end of one minute, measure the line voltage. Set the voltage connector per this reading and voltage chart below. Note: Connector number is on top of transformer. Voltage Chart 120V Unit 240V Unit Volts Connector Volts Connector Adjusting Voltage Connector Follow these steps to adjust voltage connector. 1. Disconnect unit from power. 2. Remove the screws that hold the front panel, rear panel and then the left side panel of the power unit and remove panel. 3. Locate the large transformer on the left side as you face the side of the power unit. 4. The red wire on connector 10 should be moved to the proper connector. (see voltage chart) 5. 13 V MSP Lamp Replacement Replacing the Lamp Follow these steps to replace the lamp. 1. Disconnect the equipment from the electrical power. 2. Remove front bottom panel. 3. Remove the shipping screw hidden behind the handle and slide out the reflector assembly. 4. To remove lamp, disconnect lamp leads at both ends of lamp from terminals located under the lamp holders and gently lift lamp ends out of the holders. 5. Do not touch the new lamp without wearing the white gloves that are provided in the new lamp carton. To install the new lamp, reverse procedure in #4 above. After new lamp is installed, rotate lamp to position fill tip, at the center of the lamp, to the top of the lamp. Place thumbs on top of ceramic ends of lamp when placing lamp into lamp clips. 6. Replace the reflector assembly and the front bottom panel. Note: The lamp cannot be turned on with the blanket frame assembly in the load/unload position. Do not attempt to defeat these safety interlock features Setting the Clock Note: Ensure power is applied to exposure unit. 14 MSP 3140 V Step 3 At ENTER PASSWORD prompt, touch the number box. Step 4 Type 1969 on keypad. Press the return button (1) to enter. Step 5 At SERVICE menu press the CLOCK button. Step 6 Touch the space next to YR, MO, DATE, HR (0-23), MIN, SEC and DAY (0=Sunday, 1=Monday, etc.), and enter the appropriate settings. Because these values will be active the instant the SET button is pressed, advance the time by seconds and press the SET button the instant it is correct. 15 V MSP 3140 Step 7 Press the BACK button to return to the OFF screen. Step 8 Verify the time and date are now correct. 5. Controls and Operation Prior to Operation Before attempting to start the equipment, inspect all areas around and adjacent to moving parts for possible obstructions: tools, rags, crating remnants etc. All safety guards, covers, access doors etc., must be properly installed prior to starting operation. 5.1 Controls Touch Screen Controls This unit has a touch activated graphic display to provide control of all functions, as well as status and diagnostic messaging. Buttons can be activated by pressing directly on the touch screen where the button image appears. Note: The touch screen backlight extinguishes automatically after 10 minutes. 16 MSP 3140 V Adjusting Numerical Values Adjustable numerical values can be changed by pressing directly on the screen where the numerical value appears; this will cause a keypad to display. Type the new value on the keypad and press the return key (1) to set the new value. Reading Touch Screen and PLC Program Revisions From the OFF screen, press the PROGREV button. The installed PLC and Touch Screen (INT) programs will display momentarily. Press the BACK button to return to the OFF screen, or wait and the screen will return automatically after 5 seconds. Inspection Light Operation (Where Equipped) With power applied, circuit breaker at rear of base turned on, and Power Switch on the control panel in the Off position, press the INSP LMP button to enable [button lights] or disable [button is dark] the inspection lamp. Once enabled and the Power Switch is in the On position, the inspection lamp will illuminate when the frame is opened and extinguish when closed. 5.2 Operation Turning On the Unit Turn main switch on the control panel to the On position; main screen appears and fans come on. Change Vac Time and Exposure by pressing directly on the displayed values and entering new ones as detailed earlier. 17 V MSP 3140 Vacuum Time Upon initiation of the exposure, if a vacuum time is entered, the vacuum pump turns on and a screen appears displaying the vacuum level and preset vacuum time. Once full vacuum is drawn, the vacuum time will begin to count down. Stop the exposure at any time by pressing the CANCEL button. Exposure When the vacuum count reaches zero, the lamp will activate, and a screen appears displaying the preset exposure in LtU (Light Units). As the light comes up in brightness the count rate will increase, approaching one LtU per second. Stop the exposure at any time by pressing the CANCEL button. When the Light Unit count reaches zero, an EXPOSURE COMPLETE message appears. Press OK; the main screen displays. Repeat these operation steps for the next exposure. Turning Off the Unit To turn the machine off, move the switch on the control panel to the Off position. The fans turn off and the following screen displays. 18 MSP 3140 V Saving and Recalling Settings This unit can store 15 parameter sets in memory. Saving Settings On the main screen, set Vac time and Exposure as needed. Press the SAVE button. Enter a memory location from 1-15 at the SAVE TO prompt. This number will appear to the right of MEM #. Press the BACK button to return to the main screen. The settings have been saved to that memory number for future recall. Recalling Settings Press the RECALL button. Enter a memory location from 1-15 at the RECALL FROM prompt. This number should appear to the right of MEM #. Press the BACK button to return to the main screen. 19 V MSP Messages Alert Messages The following messages will appear in flashing orange to alert the operator to a condition that needs to be remedied: PANEL OPEN displays when the main switch on the control panel is in the on position while any of the four base covers are improperly installed. This is a safety feature that prevents electrical devices within the exposure unit from activating until all four covers are properly installed. FRAME OPEN displays when there is an attempt to initiate an exposure with the vacuum frame unlatched or open. This is a safety feature which prevents exposure of photosensitive plates or screens that may be in the same room. Warning Messages The following messages will appear in flashing red when there is a fault condition within the exposure unit requiring attention. LOW VACUUM displays when the frame is unable to achieve full vacuum within 90 seconds, or there is a sudden drop in vacuum. This can be the result of a perforation in the blanket, leaky seal, faulty latch, or improperly seated vacuum frame. STRIKE FAILURE displays when the lamp fails to ignite after three attempts by the controller. Re-initiate the exposure by pressing the RETRY button, or cancel the exposure by pressing the CANCEL button. Failure to strike can be the result of a faulty lamp or power supply component(s). LOST ARC displays when the lamp extinguishes prematurely during an exposure. Press the OK button to clear the message and return to the main screen. A lost arc can be the result of a faulty lamp or power supply component(s). 6. Scheduled Maintenance Benefits Preparation Properly maintained equipment operates more efficiently, reduces operating costs, and lasts longer. A properly managed preventive maintenance program can minimize downtime. An effective preventive maintenance program includes: proper selection, handling, and application of lubricants stocking high-quality replacement parts general cleaning and appearance of equipment creation of a preventive maintenance history for each piece of equipment Preventive maintenance documentation can be an invaluable resource. WARNING: Always disconnect the electrical power from the equipment before beginning maintenance procedures. 20 MSP 3140 V Daily Inspect the vacuum frame blanket for indications of photo emulsion residue, or other dirt and contaminants. Clean away any dirt or residue using a damp sponge or shop towel moistened with warm water. Be sure to wipe dry the vacuum frame blanket after wiping with damp sponge or shop towel. Inspect vacuum frame glass plate and clean away any dirt or contaminants which may be present on the glass surface. Weekly Inspect and clean as necessary the fresh air intake vents located on both sides of the exposure lamp housing assembly. The intake vents must be free of any dirt, lint, or other foreign materials to provide proper ventilation of the photographic lamp assembly. Inspect the vacuum hoses from the vacuum pump to the vacuum frame for any sign of twisting, kinking, or wear. Re-position vacuum hoses as needed to allow for efficient operation of the vacuum frame system. Replace any hoses which exhibit signs of wear or deterioration. Monthly Inspect and clean the exposure lamp reflector assembly using a soft lint-free towel or cloth. 7. Troubleshooting General Guide Schematic The following information is provided as a guide for troubleshooting. If you have any questions regarding the installation, operation, or preventive maintenance procedures for this equipment, contact The M&R Companies Service Department. Anyone using this troubleshooting guide should have a working knowledge of electrical power and the control systems on this equipment. The electrical schematic for this unit is included separately in the literature package shipped with each new unit. IMPORTANT: This unit must receive adequate power to perform properly. Make sure the main electrical power lines to the equipment are on. DANGER: HIGH VOLTAGES WILL BE PRESENT ON THE EQUIPMENT WHILE TROUBLESHOOTING. All troubleshooting is accomplished with the equipment connected to the electrical power source. 21 V MSP 3140 Problem Probable Causes Solution The power ON/OFF switch does not operate: no fans, no vacuum, no lamp. Power switch is ON and fans are operating, however vacuum pump will not operate. Vacuum pump operates; however, no vacuum is displayed on LCD display. The fuse or circuit breaker (disconnect box) for the electrical supply line to the equipment has failed. Power switch itself has failed. A loose, disconnected or broken wire exists. A loose, disconnected or broken wire exists. Vacuum pump motor has failed. Sensor/IO board vacuum relay not operating. Rubber bead not sealing to glass. Determine the cause for the electrical overload and replace or reset the fuse or circuit breaker as necessary. Replace the power ON/OFF switch. Trace wiring to isolate wire failure and replace or repair as necessary. Trace wiring to isolate wire failure and replace or repair as necessary. Replace vacuum pump motor. Replace vacuum relay. Correct seal. To correct the seal, do the following: 1. Open frame and remove the snap ring from each pin holding the upper end of the lift arm in clevis. 2. Remove each pin and lower the now free lift arm down below the top of the machine on either side. 3. Lower the blanket frame down onto the glass carefully. 4. Loosen the hinge screws on the glass frame, three per hinge. These are the screws that control the vertical movement of the blanket frame in relation to the glass frame. These screws must be loose enough to allow the lower portion of the hinge free, unobstructed movement in the vertical direction. 5. Latch the blanket frame. 6. Set the vacuum time up to five minutes or more. 7. Start the vacuum. 8. After two minutes the blanket should be pulled down flat against the glass. It may be necessary to push down on one corner or another in order to get the rubber bead to seal all of the way around. 9. After the blanket is pulled down and the seal appears to be slightly compressed all of the way around, fully tighten all of the hinge screws loosened in Step Turn off the vacuum and unlatch the frame. 11. Attach the lift arms, shut and latch the frame and pull vacuum again to test the adjustment. If vacuum still fails to register, problem is in the hose connection or vacuum pump. Check routing of hoses and reroute or replace as required. Exposure lamp is degenerating. Replace exposure lamp. Exposure time is starting to get significantly longer. Light blue arc is visible through lamp. Lamp comes on but shuts off in the middle of exposure after unit has been in use for awhile. Lamp comes on ok when cold but will not restart when unit has become very hot. Main contactor turns on, but starter contactor does not. Main and starter contactors turn on, but lamp does not start. The lamp is defective. Fuse (3 amp) is blown. Lamp lead may be disconnected. The lamp is faulty. The connection at the lamp insulators is burnt. Lamp has not cooled down sufficiently. If no voltage to coil of main contactor, replace main contact relay on Sensor/IO board. If voltage is present at coil of main contactor, replace main contactor. If no voltage at coil of starter contactor, replace starter contactor relay on Sensor/IO board. If voltage is present at coil of starter contactor, replace starter contactor. If no voltage between FT1 and FT3 of start control module during lamp start, replace starter contactor. If voltage is present between FT1 and FT3, replace start control module. Replace lamp. Check and/or replace. Check and reconnect lead. Replace lamp. Repair or replace. 23 V MSP Replacement Parts Ozone and Rubber Products All of the vacuum blankets manufactured by NuArc Company., Inc. for the Screen Printing Industry are made of rubber products. These rubber products are damaged by exposure to higher levels of ozone. Any blanket returned to NuArc that shows indications of damage due to exposure to ozone will not be replaced or credited in any way under the warranty. Ozone occurring naturally in the atmosphere will not damage blankets to any noticeable degree. However, the ozone produced by some electronic air purifying units is concentrated enough to cause significant damage to vacuum blankets. Do not use ozone producing air purifiers of any type in any position that would cause the vacuum blanket to become exposed to increased levels of ozone.
