Bags2School A big thank you to everyone who donated clothing for the Bags2School event a few weeks ago was raised for the school. A special thanks to the PTA and staff who helped organise and support the discos. Thursday 5th November Bonfire Lunch Year 3/N Class Assembly 9:15-9:45am Mad Science Club KS1 & KS2 3:15-4:20pm Friday 6th November Reception Class Stay & Read 9:00-9:30am Y5&6 Running Club pm Monster Stomp The Monster Stomp took place on Wednesday 21st October. The children came into school wearing some very interesting items of monster related clothing. Each child was awarded a special badge for taking part. Thank you for your support. School Lunches A reminder that the new school menu will be available from 9th November. Children have taken home a form to complete to choose their menu choices. If you haven t already returned the completed form, please return it to school as soon as possible.

2 Year 3/4 Sewing Club There will be a sewing club for children in Year 3 and 4 classes starting on Monday 9th November. The club will take place every Monday after school from 3.15 pm until 4.15 pm. The club will run for five consecutive weeks. The club will be run by Mrs Booth. The children will learn simple sewing skills and make some interesting things to take home. The total cost for the five weeks is to cover the cost of materials. There are only 15 places available for this club, and places will be allocated on a first come, first served basis. If you would like your child to take part, please put your request in writing and send it in an envelope with the correct amount of money or cheque as soon as possible (Cheques should be made payable to Our Lady & St. Gerard s RC Primary School). Your envelope should be given to the school office. Thank you. Mrs Booth Year 2 Art and Design Technology Club There will be an art and design club for children in Year 2 starting on Monday 9th November. The club will take place every Monday after school from 3.15 pm until 4.15 pm. The club will run for five consecutive weeks with the final session being on Monday 7th December. The club will be run by Mrs Hathaway and Mrs McGarry and will involve the children participating in a variety of fun art and design activities with something to take away at the end of each session. The total cost for the five weeks is to cover the cost of materials. There are only 15 places available for this club, and places will be allocated on a first come, first served basis. If you would like your child to take part, please put your request in writing and send it in an envelope with the correct amount of money or cheque as soon as possible (Cheques should be made payable to Our Lady & St. Gerard s RC Primary School). Your envelope should be given directly to Mrs Hathaway or Mrs McGarry. Thank you. The club will take place every Monday after school from 3.15pm until 4.00pm. The club will run for five consecutive weeks with the final session being on Monday 7th December. The club will be run by Mrs Stacey and will involve the children participating in a variety of problem solving activities, including logic problems and puzzles. 3 School Council News The School Council are planning some exciting activities and fund raising events for the coming school year. On Friday 13th November it is Children In Need day. Children and staff will have the opportunity to come to school in fancy dress and donate There will also be a cake sale with cakes being sold at 20p each. There will be a Pop Up Cafe in the school hall on the day from 9:00-10:45am, Everyone Welcome!! A Christmas breakfast will be available on Tuesday 8th December, more details to follow shortly. Design a Christmas Card Competition If children would like to design a Christmas Card over the half term they can enter a brilliant competition being run by PTS sticker company. Children can win a Tatty Teddy and their Christmas card design printed onto proper Christmas cards! The company will be using the winning design for their cards too! Children simply design a Christmas card on an A4 piece of paper using bright colours and then return to school with the child s name and age on the back. Entries must be returned to school by Tuesday 3rd November. Head Lice We have received a number of concerns from parents who have made us aware that their children are repeatedly coming home with head lice and they are having to continuously treat their child's hair which is very frustrating. The only way we can ensure that head lice are not being spread is if all parents treat their child's hair at the same time. We would be grateful if you could check your child's head tonight and take any appropriate action. Head lice treatment is available free of charge from local chemists on the Minor Ailment Scheme. Year 6 Maths Problem Solving Club I would like my child to take part in the maths problem solving club on Monday afternoons from pm. He / She will be walking home. He / She will be collected by Signed: (Parent / Guardian)

4 Year 2 s visit to the Hindu Temple Today the Year 2 children visited the Hindu Temple at Preston. The children were exceptionally well-behaved and were amazed by the beauty and splendour of the Mandir. They heard stories about the Hindu Gods and were given a tour around the prayer room, witnessing gifts offered to the Gods as a sign of respect. The priest welcomed us all by putting Tilak on our foreheads. The Year 2 teachers and staff are very proud of the children. They demonstrated the British Values of showing respect to other religions and beliefs, in a very grown-up manner. The staff at the temple were equally impressed by the children s behaviour and by the knowledge that the children shared about Hinduism. They listened well and asked and answered interesting questions. Well done everyone!

5 Year 2 History In Year 2, we have been learning about the history of our school. On Monday, Mrs Mann came into visit us. Mrs Mann started school at St Gerard s when she was a four years old child. Then, when she was an adult she became a teacher, a deputy head and eventually a head teacher. We enjoyed listening to Mrs Mann s stories and we learnt a lot from her about how our school has changed: I learnt that you had to do really good handwriting and if you didn t do good handwriting you could get slapped by the cane! (Jessica) I found it interesting to find out that if a child had done something naughty and didn t own up to it, then the whole class could get the cane! (Ava-Jane) One of the teachers called the cane his friend. (Charlotte) Sometimes the whole school had to close because there were so many poorly children. (Daniel) They didn t have carpet on the floor, just wooden blocks. (Scarlet) In the past, they didn t have colourful displays on the walls, just plain old bricks. (Amy) All children had milk in glass bottles. In the Winter, the milk would sometimes freeze and it had to be put near the heaters to thaw out before the children could drink it. (Ted) When Mrs Mann was in school, all the children were in one classroom with three different teachers teaching all at the same time! (Keenan) Children learnt to count like we do, but Maths was called Arithmetic back then. (Lillian) The children didn t have a school uniform. They came to school in their own clothes. (Sophie) Thank you Mrs Mann for coming in to talk to us, and for answering so many of our questions.
