Vacancies are located throughout the State; any upper level, degree-seeking student may apply to these positions. Application requirements can be found on the Division s website: The vacancies listed below outline potential projects for interns; however, additional duties and training opportunities are likely to arise throughout the internship period. Positions that are marked as pending are tentatively filled for the current term. All internships require a background check and are volunteer positions only (unpaid), unless otherwise noted. GATOR Training and Exercise Specialist Preparedness Bureau Create an online training program and supporting reference for GATOR (Geospatial Assessment Tool for Operations and Response) a web mapping tool used to obtain the common operating picture. The final deliverable should include a quick guide and a long form reference guide documenting all of the available tools and providing a framework for documenting all the data. : Adult learning and instruction Technical writing Course development Familiarity with Flash or other web technology appropriate for online training : Familiarity with GIS data Familiarity with Emergency Management Experience developing online training Hours per week: 20 Polk County Emergency Management Specialist Location: Polk County Emergency Management, Winter Haven, Florida 1. 4 Operations Intern Response Bureau The successful candidate could potentially work on any of the projects listed below: 1. Conduct a systemic evaluation of the federal, state, county and Division ICS structures. This will include an assessment of the structure of the county CEMP crosswalk. A key component of the project will include a graphical portrayal of the decision-making process (PERT chart). 2. Identify the potential efficiencies that develop from a Rural County Coalition, integrating all levels of government. This is essentially an investigation of the bottom up approach to developing answers to policy. 3. Research the integration of the Local Mitigation Strategy (LMS) into the Post Disaster Redevelopment Plan (PDRP). This component should have the potential to be exercised. 1. Project 1: Strong foundation in emergency management demonstrated by the completion of FEMA Independent Study Courses: 100, 200, 700, 800 Completion of FEMA courses: G-300 and G-400 Strong research skills Customer service skills 2. Project 2: Familiarity with emergency management including the completion of FEMA Independent Study Courses: 100, 200, 700, 800 Plan development experience Business background 3. 5 Infrastructure Intern Response Bureau Available: Spring/Summer Assist in the update of the hurricane shelter survey manual. This survey is used in the determination of statewide shelter capacity for vulnerable populations. The intern will have the opportunity to conduct local field surveys as they arise. Familiarity with emergency management (demonstrated by the completion of FEMA Independent Study Courses: 100, 200, 700, 800) Background in building construction and/or design [architecture or engineering student] Completion of a structural design course in steel, concrete or wood Strong writing skills Ability to read, interpret and explain building construction documents and reference materials Field experience is a plus State Watch Office (SWO) Intern Response Bureau Update standard operating procedures (SOPs) and other guidance Complete operations officer level training Understand the function and role of the State Watch Office Assist with various duties or operation projects as assigned Familiarity with emergency management (demonstrated by the completion of FEMA Independent Study Courses: 100, 200, 700, 800) Strong oral and written communication skills Familiarity with Microsoft Windows and web based databases and applications Ability to multi-task and handle stressful situations Completion of FEMA Independent Study course 1 and 247 Meteorology Intern Response Bureau Assist in weather report compilation Assist in web video development Conduct outreach events Support State Watch Office (SWO) activities Perform research projects, as needed Junior level or higher pursuing meteorology degree Candidate must be able to commit 2-3 half days (mornings) a week Familiarity with emergency management (may be demonstrated by the completion of FEMA Independent Study Courses: 100, 200, 700, 800) Hours per week: 10-15
6 Environmental/Technical Intern (1) Mitigation Bureau Location: Florida Division of Emergency Management, Orlando, FL Available: Spring Assist with planning tasks associated with the Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP) Aid in the environmental reviews of HMGP projects Become familiar with the overall application process and requirements associated with HMGP Assist in preparing applications for submittal to FEMA from the technical prospective (BCA and environmental) Attend training events and take all FDEM required IS classes Create checklists Define action plans and coordination to follow those plans The ideal candidate would be able to write well, be a good team player, willing to learn, and have some planning and environmental experience Intern must also be a proficient user of the Microsoft Suite Google earth experience is very helpful for the environmental reviews Hours per week: Environmental/Technical Intern (2) Mitigation Bureau Location: Florida Division of Emergency Management, Orlando, FL Available: Spring Aid in the environmental reviews of HMGP projects: assist in environmental review Become familiar with the overall application process and requirements associated with HMGP Assist in preparing applications for submittal to FEMA from the technical prospective (BCA and environmental) Attend training events, take all FDEM required IS classes The ideal candidate would be able to write well, be a good team player, willing to learn, and have some planning and environmental experience Intern must also be a proficient user of the Microsoft Suite Demonstrate strong work ethic and professionalism Google earth experience is very helpful for the environmental reviews External Affairs Intern Director s Office Research public education and outreach programs used by other countries such as the Netherlands, Russia, England, Chile, Japan, Australia, and China. Additional countries may be added throughout the project. Work with the External Affairs staff on public education and outreach events such as the Severe Weather Awareness Week in Spring. Job Duties: assist External Affairs team with drafting materials such as rack cards, brochures, newsletters, social media posts, press releases, talking points, and articles. Possess a basic understanding of public relations, writing, or marketing Ability to interact professionally with the public, media, and senior management Should be able to work independently, possess good judgment, and be a critical thinker Familiarity with emergency management (Completion of FEMA Independent Study Courses: 100, 200, 700, and 800)

8 Military Liaison Intern Response Bureau Available: Spring Develop standard operating procedure (SOP) for regional coordination structure. Strong command of English language Experience writing and editing reports Familiarity with military structure Environment and Debris Intern Recovery Bureau Available: Summer Review debris procurement documents (RFPs, RFQ s, etc), debris removal and monitoring contracts, and debris management plans we receive from the local governments. Go over reviews with staff and assist in formulating responses. Explore areas for potential partnerships external to the agency to assist with debris management planning and/or response (i.e., private sector opportunities). Research and develop a crosswalk with regard to all the policies, guidelines and regulations applicable to debris management operations. Something similar to a favorites list of websites and other resources for our section to use as a reference library. Assist with internal mock scenarios for Table Top exercises Review o Public Assistance Policy Digest o FEMA 325 Debris Management Guide Create power point or flow chart demonstrating debris personnel beginning to end role in a disaster or presidential declaration. Once developed it can be used as a quick reference to teach those not aware of the process. Research automated debris ticketing systems and similar technological devices that are applicable to debris removal. Help to develop an ongoing intern curriculum through feedback, independent motivation interests and general critique of the section as an unbiased observer. Student in law, emergency management, public policy or public safety degree program
9 EMAP Accreditation Intern Director s Office Available: Fall The intern will assist the Florid Division of Emergency Management (FDEM) with its Emergency Management Accreditation Program (EMAP) efforts at the state and local level. This work will involve learning the EMAP standard and applying it to emergency management programs in the State of Florida in support of program accreditation. The intern will interact with state and local emergency management personnel to help identify programmatic shortcomings, in addition to providing technical assistance to local-level emergency managers regarding the accreditation process. Previous knowledge of or experience with the EMAP Standard is not required or expected. Experience with the following programs: Word, Excel, and Access Experience with project management or knowledge of projects management principles Experience with technical writing Hours per week: 15 Legal Intern Director s Office Assist Division attorney with contract review/issues; rule-making; administrative law issues; public records & sunshine law issues; other miscellaneous Division legal issues Strong command of English language Experience writing and editing reports Ability to understand and interpret law and policy Research skills Student in law, emergency management, public policy or public safety degree program **This position may be combined with another Director s Office intern position.** Wakulla County Emergency Management Specialist Location: Wakulla County Emergency Management, Crawfordville, FL Available: Spring/Summer Assist in the development of Local Mitigation Strategy(LMS) grants and other planning as needed Prepare grant applications and perform cost benefit analyses Develop design criteria for key projects identified by the LMS Committee Assist with EMAP accreditation Planning or Engineering background Hours per week: 15 to 40
