8 PROGRAM DESCRIPTION The Health Technology strand prepares students with the skills and knowledge necessary to become Licensed Practical Nurses and/or enter a wide variety of Health Service occupations. Upon successful completion of the course Health Technology I (Practical Nursing I), students may qualify to enter Practical Nursing II or receive advanced standing in a variety of Health Services occupations at the Northern Virginia Community College. CIP Code Suggested Grade Level: Prerequisites: 12, 13 (Adult) None - Introduction to Health Technology is strongly recommended. 9 Practical Nursing The 18 month Practical Nursing program is offered as: 1. Practical Nursing I & II- The first 9 month course of study is the high school extended program and is open to high school seniors and adults. Upon successful completion of this course, 26, maximum 36, students may qualify for the Practical Nursing Program in Prince William County: 2. Practical Nursing III - The second 9 month course of study is the post high school program offered on a full-day basis which begins the September following the completion of Practical Nursing I & II. Practical Nursing programs must meet certain regulations as prescribed by the Virginia Department of Education, the Virginia Board of Nursing, and the Local Education Authority. The student organization, Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA), serves a co-curricula function in which students are provided excellent opportunities to reinforce and enhance basic skills and develop leadership skills. Practical Nursing I & II 8357 & 8358 (36 weeks) COURSE DESCRIPTIONS Grade Level: Prerequisites: 12 (suggested) Introduction to Health Technology is strongly recommended Practical Nursing I & II is an occupational preparation course offered at the twelfth-grade level or to an adult with a high school diploma or with a General Educational Development (GED) certificate. Emphasis is given to human anatomy and physiology, communications, introduction to fundamental skills, nutrition, drug therapy, and growth and development. Course content prepares students for a wide variety of post high school majors in the Health Services Industry. Students completing this course can qualify for advanced standing in Health Occupation s curriculum at Northern Virginia Community College. ii

10 Practical Nursing III 8359 (36 weeks) Grade Level: Adult, 13 Prerequisites: Practical Nursing I & II Practical Nursing III is an all day, 9 month occupational preparation course offered to Practical Nursing I & II completers only. Class enrollment is limited to 26 students. If needed, up to 36 students can be accepted with the addition of one instructor. Classroom and clinical training are given in approved hospitals, licensed nursing homes, physician office settings, and schools under the direction of a nurse educator. Emphasis is given to administration of medicines, advanced and complex patient care, and practice with patients of all ages. In addition, students learn advanced anatomy, physiology, and human behavior as related to health and disease, including mental illness. Upon successful completion of the total program, the student will qualify to take the practical nurse licensing examination. iii
