1 Department of Business STANDARD PROFESSIONAL EXPECTATIONS The SPEs represent the responsibilities and expectations for full-time permanent faculty in the areas of teaching and advising, service, and professional development. 1 Business faculty are expected to support the vision, mission and objectives of the Department as well as meet the requirements specified in the Faculty Handbook. Faculty in the Department are expected to: Teaching Ensure that course objectives match catalog description, methods of assessment correspond to course objectives and description, and the grading rubric measures progress on course objectives. Develop course material and methods of assessment that are academically challenging and enhance, where appropriate, critical thinking, ethical considerations, effective communication, and teamwork skills. Demonstrate enthusiasm for the subject taught, present course material clearly and effectively, and establish an academically challenging environment. Maintain five or more office hours per week. Regularly meet with advisees and fulfill advising Faculty in the Department are expected to: Service Serve on college councils, committees, and task forces. Participate in faculty assembly meetings, convocations, and commencements. Support interdisciplinary, campus, and community activities. Serve on department committees. Participate in department meetings. Support department-sponsored and -related events. Professional Development Faculty in the Department are expected to make intellectual contributions to their respective fields through applied, theoretical and pedagogical research. Such activities and contributions should continue throughout their careers and should demonstrate steady growth in their scholarly disciplines. Consistent with accreditation guidelines, the Department of Business has created operational definitions for Academically Qualified and Professionally Qualified faculty. The criteria for meeting and maintaining 1 Department SPEs are considered in decisions pertaining to tenure, promotion and merit awards (See Faculty Handbook, Chapters Two and Three). 1
2 the qualifications for each category are detailed below. 2 Whether faculty members are Academically or Professionally Qualified will be determined as part of their annual evaluation by the department chair. 3 A. Academically Qualified Status Being Academically Qualified requires the faculty member (1) to have a qualifying degree to initially earn academically qualified status, as well as (2) to conduct ongoing scholarly activities to maintain this status as follows. 1. Qualifying Degree An Academically Qualified faculty member must have one of the following qualifying degrees to demonstrate intellectual capital development: A. Fully Qualified Doctoral Degree in both a business field and in the area of primary teaching B. Qualified Doctoral Degree EITHER in a business field but not in the area of primary teaching responsibilities OR outside of business but in an area of academic preparation that incorporates the primary teaching C. Topically Qualified Degree outside of business and not in the area of primary teaching responsibilities, but engaged in development activities directly supporting the teaching field. D. Graduate degree in law to teach business law and legal environment of business. E. Specialized Taxation Degree or combination of graduate degree in law and accounting focused on taxation. F. ABD in degree type above or a faculty member with a specialized master s degree in a business-related field and sufficient prior research activity in their primary teaching field. 2. Ongoing Scholarly Activities To maintain Academically Qualified status, faculty must engage in ongoing scholarly activities over both a five-year review period and on an annual academic year basis. There are two requirements. Requirement ONE: Each tenured or tenure track faculty member is expected to produce at least one intellectual contribution from the following list each year to maintain Academically Qualified status: 2 A department qualifications committee will provide oversight of the criteria and review applications for interpretations of and exceptions to these requirements. 3 Determination of being Academically or Professionally Qualified is only one component of the faculty member s annual evaluation, and is distinct from the processes for fourth-year review and review for promotion and tenure. 2

Peer Reviewed Journal Publications Articles in print or accepted for publication in peer reviewed journals Cases in print or accepted for publication in peer reviewed journals Articles currently (re)submitted to a peer reviewed journal publications for review Cases currently (re)submitted to a peer reviewed journal publications for review B. Peer Reviewed Scholarly Books, Textbooks, Book Chapters Scholarly books Textbooks Scholarly chapters in an edited volume Edited scholarly books Published cases, published instructional materials, and published instructional software Published book reviews Supplementary materials for textbooks such as test banks, study guides and instructor s manuals Books, chapters in books, and/or book reviews (re)submitted and under review Edited scholarly books C. Peer Reviewed Presentations Conference papers presented and published or abstracted in peer reviewed proceedings Conference papers presented and not published in proceedings Conference papers presented in poster sessions, symposia, or roundtables and abstracted Conference papers accepted for presentation and/or publication in peer reviewed proceedings Reprints of peer reviewed conference papers appearing in other than original source Invited conference papers presented or accepted for presentation D. Non-Peer Reviewed Publications and Presentations Books, chapters in books Published materials describing the design and implementation of a course Presentation of research inside or outside the College Presentation of research at a conference Presenting at professional development workshops organized for the college community (e.g. grant writing workshops, research methods workshops, etc.) E. Research and Grants Grants awarded/completed Grants in progress/outcome reports distributed Grant proposals submitted for review F. Other research and scholarly activity Editorial activities o Journal or associate editorship, member of review board o Scholarly review for peer reviewed outlet Leadership positions in academic and professional organizations Chair or discussant duties at professional conferences 3
4 Requirement TWO: Of the intellectual contributions during the five year period, at least two must be a peer reviewed journal publication or scholarly book/book chapter from the list below: A. Peer Reviewed Journal Publications Articles in print or accepted for publication in peer reviewed journals Book reviews in print or accepted for publication in peer reviewed journals Cases in print or accepted for publication in peer reviewed journals Invited articles in print or accepted for publication in peer reviewed journals Invited cases in print or accepted for publication in peer reviewed journals B. Peer Reviewed Scholarly Books, Textbooks, Book Chapters Scholarly books Textbooks Scholarly chapters in an edited volume Edited scholarly book B. Professionally Qualified Status Being Professionally Qualified requires faculty to have (1) one of the following qualifying degrees and (2) relevant professional experience to initially earn Professionally Qualified status, as well as (3) ongoing professional activities to maintain this status as follows: 1. Qualifying Degree A Professionally Qualified faculty member must have one of the following qualifying degrees to demonstrate intellectual capital development. A. Master s Degree or certification in a field related to the area of primary teaching B. Doctoral Degree or equivalent (e.g., Executive Doctorate in Management) in a field related to the area of primary teaching 2. Relevant Professional Experience A Professionally Qualified faculty member must have relevant professional experience at the time of hire as follows: Experience is relevant to the faculty member s primary teaching responsibility, AND Experience is of duration and level of responsibility commensurate with the faculty member s primary teaching responsibility, AND Either the faculty member s experience is current at the time of hire OR the faculty member has been retired from a relevant professional position for no more than 5 years, OR At the time of appointment the faculty member holds of a current nationally recognized professional certification, including CPA, CMA or CFA, which is deemed as evidence of professional qualification for the related teaching duties 4

Ongoing Professional Activities To maintain Professionally Qualified status, faculty must engage in one of the following professional or scholarly activities every academic year: Obtaining new or maintaining a professional certification appropriate to teaching Attending an academic or professional conference in the area of the faculty member s primary teaching responsibility. Creating and delivering an executive education seminar. Maintaining an active consulting practice with evidence of major, multiple clients. Owning and/or operating a profitable/successful business that is a major portion of one s annual income. Authoring a report from sponsored research that is widely disseminated. Serving on the Board of Directors for a major not-for-profit or for-profit organization. Serving on the Board of Directors for a major industry/trade association.
