UB3 2LW The Board of Age UK Hillingdon is seeking to recruit a Chief Executive Officer to lead, manage and develop this prominent and successful charity that supports the lives of older people across the London Borough of Hillingdon. Age UK Hillingdon is part of the Age England Association Our Mission Our aim is to improve the quality of life and promote a positive view of all older people in the London Borough of Hillingdon, enabling them to: retain maximum choice over the direction of their lives live in physical environments suited to their needs access satisfying personal relationships maintain good health find community and leisure activities Every task carried out, piece of advice given or benefit secured achieves one or more of these aims. The Board of Age UK Hillingdon (AUKH) has a strategy for growth and to provide an increasing range of services to maximise the wellbeing of older people and enable them to maintain their independence, exercise choice and have a strong voice on the issues that affect their lives. We are looking for a Chief Executive Officer to lead the organisation to achieve these goals and who is able to operate effectively in challenging times and a constantly changing working environment. The following pages provide some background information about Age UK Hillingdon in terms of our history and what we do to support older people across the borough. 2 About Us Age UK Hillingdon operates across the London Borough of Hillingdon which is the second largest and westernmost borough in Greater London with a population of some 275,000. We have a proud history of over 25 years service in the London Borough of Hillingdon and have grown to provide a wide range of services to meet the needs and demands of an increasing number of older people. Our mission is to make later life better for everyone in the Borough and our values underpin everything we do and our desire to highlight what is positive about age. We are passionate about making Hillingdon a great place to grow old in. We pride ourselves on the quality of our services having achieved a number of external accreditations including ISO 9001, Advice Services Alliance (ASA) and Investors In People (IIP). If our staff /volunteers are working/volunteering in a regulated activity they will have a DBS check at the required level and fully trained you can be assured of a reliable, professional and caring service. As a charity we make significant use of volunteers which not only enables us to offer our extensive range of services, but provides our volunteers with a real sense of community spirit and the knowledge that they are doing something worthwhile. How we are structured Age UK Hillingdon is governed by a Board of eight trustees who are responsible in law for the charity. Their services are offered on a voluntary basis and they are elected by the members at the AGM. They set overall policy, monitor implementation of our three year plan, are responsible for ensuring funds are raised funds for the services that Age UK Hillingdon run and for raising the profile of the organisation within the borough. The Chief Executive Officer is supported by the Director for Enterprise (Deputy CEO) and the Director for Community Services, and a strong and experienced management team

3 Our Services Information and Advice We provide a wide range of Information & Advice services to older people from three locations within the borough, and through our outreach teams. Our Information & Advice services include: Welfare Benefits Free Will Writing Making the Right Move (housing options) Information, advice and advocacy to the ethnic minority elders living in the borough of Hillingdon Social Contact Services We provide a range of activities & wellbeing services for older residents, such as: Active Ageing Group Ageing Well Groups Befriending Failte - Irish Social Club Fit for the Future Friendly Friday Groups Health and Fitness 60+ Interactive Older People's Club Townfield Community Centre Older LGBT social Group Home & Hospital Services We provide a wide range of Health and Care services. These services include: A&E Support Falls Prevention Handy Person Service Help at Home Service Home from Hospital Service Take Home and settle Nail Cutting Age UK Hillingdon has recently been awarded a number of four-year, Community Support Service contracts, by the London Borough of Hillingdon. These contracts cover: Information, advice, welfare benefits and access for older people Social Wellbeing Service for older people Practical Support Service for older people These take effect from April 2014 and will mean a reconfiguration of how we manage and deliver our services in the future. This is a significant challenge for the senior management team and the successful applicant will be responsible for leading and delivering this important change

4 Charity Shops We operate two successful charity shops, one in the north and one in the south of the Borough, which bring in significant income to support our work. Commercial Activities In partnership with Age UK London Trading, we also offer a range of products and services tailor-made for the over 50s, including: Home Insurance Car Insurance Travel Insurance Gas & Electricity Personal Alarms Funeral Plans Moving Forward Our work is funded by a range of grants from bodies such as the London Borough of Hillingdon, income from our charity shops and from donations and legacies. We operate from a sound financial position but are mindful that we live in an ever changing world where quality service delivery and value for money are key to meeting the needs of our stakeholders and the older residents of the borough. Managing change, delivering these services and securing the income to support them will be a key measure of success for the successful applicant

5 Role Profile Title Salary Hours Reporting to Chief Executive Officer circa 50,000 per annum depending upon experience 35 hours per week (Monday to Friday) Trustee Board Terms Job Purpose Principal Tasks Strategic Development The role is offered on a permanent contract and will involve some evening and weekend work. Given the seniority of this position the post holder would be expected to work in a flexible way to meet business needs. To provide operational and strategic leadership within the organisation; working with the Board and Senior Management Team to ensure that Age UK Hillingdon promotes the welfare of older people through the provision of direct services, innovation and research into the needs and preferences of older people, campaigning and social advocacy and partnership with other agencies. To manage and develop Age UK Hillingdon in line with the policies and decisions of the Board. The Chief Executive Officer reports to the Trustees through the Chair of the Board and is responsible for informing and advising it on the development and implementation of the organisation's policies, strategies and services, and ensuring the effective and proper management of the organisation's resources, compliance with legal requirements and with good practice in all aspects of its work. Meet the CEO s legal responsibilities as Company Secretary. These include: Preparation of Annual Report and Accounts Annual Return to Charity Commission Annual Return to Companies House Support to the Board of Trustees Develop and deliver the next long-term strategy for the organisation, with measurable objectives, monitoring and reviewing the strategy at regular intervals In accordance with the strategic direction set by the Trustees, prepare and implement annual objectives and annual work programmes for staff Advise Trustees on legal requirements, policy issues and priorities relating to the general work of the organisation and its - 5 -

6 internal structure and management Enhance the charity's local and regional reputation in the provision and delivery of local services Ensure that Age UK Hillingdon develops and maintains a high, positive public profile Activities Ensure the effective management of services, monitoring and keeping under review the structure of the organisation Financial Management Develop and maintain alliances with key stakeholders to secure contracts and income generation for Age UK Hillingdon Raise the profile of the organisation and market its aims and services Identify and advise Trustees on potential areas for service development and expansion Identify and establish ways of consulting service users and the wider constituency of older people in Hillingdon about their views, needs, preferences and priorities Monitor progress against objectives and outcomes and report to the Trustees and other stakeholders Ensure that quality standards for the organisation s activities are developed, reviewed and consistently applied Ensure that Age UK Hillingdon develops and maintains effective networks and working partnerships with Age UK, other Age UK organisations, other national, regional and local voluntary organisations and public sector agencies, and works in partnership with them regarding multi-borough opportunities Identify and establish ways of working in partnership with the private sector for mutual benefit Risk Management reporting to monthly Board meeting In collaboration with the Treasurer and the Senior Management Team: Ensure regular and timely financial reports are provided to the Board Ensure the maintenance of effective accounting systems Set and monitor budgets with managers Maintain and protect the assets of the charity - 6 -

7 Income Generation Lead fundraising activities and seek out new funding streams in line with the business plan and the marketing plan Identify and advise Trustees on appropriate methods of generating income, including: service contract bids, bids for grants, commercial activity, partnerships with other organisations, service level agreements, charitable trusts, corporate sponsorship, donations and legacies Ensure the effective management and development of the trading activities Personnel Ensure appropriate procedures are in place for the recruitment and management of staff As head of the senior management team, provide motivational leadership to managers and to the wider staff team Ensure that the organisation's corporate values and policies are relevant, fair and consistently implemented Ensure that staff and volunteers are effectively deployed and appropriately supervised and supported, including the delivery of the annual appraisal process Ensure that systems are in place to facilitate effective communication with staff and volunteers Advise the Trustees on policies for staff training and development and oversee their implementation Ensure that personnel records are maintained and that they comply with the requirements of Data Protection legislation Premises Oversee the maintenance of an accessible and safe office base together with any other premises used by Age UK Hillingdon, ensuring effective client-facing spaces are provided - 7 -

8 Person Specification Experience Proven ability to inspire, lead, motivate and manage staff and volunteers and to lead the senior management team, so that activities are coordinated and delivered across the whole organisation Successful track record of generating significant ongoing income through the identification and promotion of new business opportunities Experience of working with Trustees and / or work with a Board of Management and an ability to recognise and make effective use of the range of expertise available from the Trustees and the Executive Demonstrable experience and success of leading multidisciplinary teams across multiple locations Experience of setting, working to, measuring and evaluating key operational and strategic objectives and associated KPIs Financially astute with a proven track record of budget holding and cost management, with a commitment to strong budget management and to swift action to address slippage if required Ability to balance strategic vision (and planning ability) with day to day operational needs Proven track record of developing and delivering services within budget Experience of operating within a multi-stakeholder environment, with the ability to build and enhance a range of sustainable relationships with stakeholders and the public and to take on an ambassadorial role Experience of leading on negotiations with a significant grant funder or equivalent Experience of working within the philosophy and ethos of a charitable organisation Personal Attributes Passionate about and committed to the aims of Age UK Hillingdon Credibility and gravitas to lead an outstanding organisation working in an increasingly important field Strategic thinker with excellent communication, stakeholder engagement and relationship management skills Commercial acumen, with the ability to identify and develop new opportunities Excellent project management skills with the ability to successfully An ability to delegate responsibility appropriately and empower managers and staff to take decisions and initiate improvements and change within given parameters Highly developed analysis and reporting skills, with the ability to identify and explore new and innovative ways of working, producing comprehensive business cases or fully supported recommendations accordingly Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to form effective working - 8 -
