How to Make a Simple Free Wordpress Website 1. Create an account -Go to -Click the orange Get started button -Fill in the boxes: , username, password, blog address! -Donʼt worry, we will change it from a blog to a website! -Wordpress will tell you if you choose a username that is not available! -Wordpress will tell you if your website name is not available! -An option may pop up to pay $18 for your own domain name! (for example, instead of you could have -You will need your /username and password to log in! -Scroll down and click on the Create Blog button on the left! -The left column is the free option! -The other columns cost money and have more features 2. Automatic setup -A setup page appears -Fill in the title of your website and a tagline -These will appear at the top of each page of your site -You can change these later 3. Pick a theme -Several themes will appear; some are free and some cost money -These instructions are written for the theme Twenty-Twelve -Click on the image for Twenty-Twelve 4. Final setup -More pages will appear encouraging you to share future blog posts and write your first post -Skip these -A confirmation will be sent to you -Login to your and click to confirm -You MUST do this or you will not be able to publish webpages -Note that you might receive two s from Wordpress; make sure you click on the one to Confirm -You may have several windows open at this point; close them all and go back to wordpress.com -You may need to log in again 5. Create webpages -When you login, you should be taken to your dashboard with a menu on the left -If you donʼt see this, look for the word dashboard on top and click to go to the dashboard -Hover over Pages in the left menu -Look for All pages and click All Pages -A list of your pages will appear -There should be one called About that Wordpress created -Open About by clicking on it or on edit beneath it
-You will see a box with the title ( About ) and a box with some sample text -Delete the sample text and fill in some information about yourself or your business -There are buttons along the top of the text box that do additional things (more on these later) -You need to turn off the comments! -At the very top, look for a box that says Screen Options! -This controls what is displayed when you are working on a webpage! -Click on Screen Options! -Check the box by Discussion (if it is not already checked)! -Scroll down on your screen to where the Discussion options have opened! -Uncheck the box next to Allow comments! -You will need to uncheck Allow comments on every page you create -On the right, look for Page Attributes -Choose full-width page template, no sidebar -Click on the button for Update ; if you do not see it, your confirmation might not have worked -Add more pages:! -Choose Add new at the top or at the left under Pages! -FIll in a title and information! -Turn off the comments! -Choose the Full-width page template! -Click Publish or Update -New pages will appear in the website menu in the order in which you create them; you can rearrange them later 6. Check your work -Open a new web window -Type in your website address (e.g., johnsmith.wordpress.com) -Your website should appear -There is also a Preview option on the dashboard, but the Preview page replaces your editing page; I prefer to have both open at once -If you make a change and you want to see it live, you must reload the page (use the curling arrow symbol at the top right of the address) 7. Turn off the blog -The front page of the website it set as a blog -In the left menu, hover over Settings and choose Reading -For the Front Page Display choose A static page -From the drop down menu for Front Page choose About -This will make your About page be the front page -You must click Save! 8. Appearance -Background! -In the left menu, hover over Appearance and choose Background! -You can choose a color for the background of your site! -(optional) You can upload an image (you can tile a small image or upload a big one)
! -It can be tricky to make an image look normal! -If you upload an image and donʼt like it, you can delete it -Header (optional)! -In the left menu, hover over Appearance and choose Customize! -Click header and choose an image to use in the header! -This image should be long, horizontal, and thin! -It will appear at the top of every page! -You can delete it if you do not like it! -For some reason, this Customize screen looks different from the rest of the screens; I donʼt know why! The header button is at the right -This is also where you can change your title and tagline (Appearance, Customize) Advanced Instructions 1. Backups and updates -The Wordpress software is periodically updated -Some updates may occur automatically (Iʼm not sure how it works with a free WP site) -You can check for updates using the left menuʼs Updates option -If the updates need to be done manually, there will be buttons that say Update Now -You just need to push the buttons -It is smart to create backups of your website in case it is accidentally deleted/damaged -However, Iʼm not sure how to do this with a free WP site; at the least, you can keep a copy of your photos and text on your computer -Just FYI, I create backups two ways:! -through the company that I pay to host my site! -using a plugin that creates a periodic backup automatically -Plugins can be a little tricky to install -Iʼm not sure that WP allows you to create backups on THEIR server; youʼd need to find a way to save the backup on your computer x. Rearranging the order in the menu x. Creating nested menus -You may want a nested menu (for example, there is a menu item for Products and when the user hovers over it, there is a submenu with Dairy products, Firewood, and Homemade candles ) -Create the top page first ( Products ) -You have to put something on the top page, even if it is just filler -Create the next page ( Dairy products ) -At the right under Page Attributes look for Parent -Choose Products as the Parent of Dairy products -Remember to save (aka Publish or Update) -Repeat this with the other pages ( Firewood and Homemade candles )
x. Adding a photo 1. Add a photo via the media library! -On the left menu, look for Media and Library! -Click on Library; your library should appear! -At the top, click on add new! -You can drag/drop an image from your desktop or use the select button! -Make sure your image is properly sized (72 dpi, about 400 pixels wide)! -Sometimes Wordpress gets stuck uploading images on a slow connection; just try again! -Once your image is in the library, open the Page where you want it! -Click Add media! -Click on the tab for Media Library (it may already be displayed)! -Click on the image you want! -At the right you can add a caption (optional) and choose the alignment and size! -Click the Insert into page button -I like this method because you can upload multiple photos to the library at once, and if it gets stuck, you can close the library window without worrying about losing changes 2. Add a photo directly into a page! -Open the Page where you want an image! -Click Add media! -Click on the tab for Upload File (it may already be displayed)! -You can drag/drop an image from your desktop or use the select button! -Make sure your image is properly sized (72 dpi, about 400 pixels wide)! -Sometimes Wordpress gets stuck uploading images on a slow connection! -Once youʼve uploaded an image, options appear at the right! -At the right you can add a caption (optional) and choose the alignment and size! -Click the Insert into page button! -Remember to save your work (aka Publish or Update) 1. and 2. Once an image is on your page, you can edit it by hovering over it. A blue button will appear at its top left. Click the button to edit the image. 3. The Featured image -When you are editing a Page, there is an option at the right called Featured image -You can choose a featured image from your Media Library or computer -It will appear at the top of your webpage -I prefer to add images directly into the page x. Adding a photo gallery x. Adding a link
x. Using other pages templates (with a sidebar and/or widgets) -There are other templates -Default: has a sidebar with widgets (which are boxes of info) -Front page: has two widgets at the bottom -Look for Appearance -Look for Widgets and click on it More x. A note on themes -There are many themes available -You can switch your theme at any time -Some aspects of one theme might not carry over to another, so it is good to decide in the beginning -Themes need to be updated periodically -Choosing a popular theme or one directly from Wordpress is beneficial because it is likely that it will continue to be updated -Paying for a theme does not ensure that its maker will keep updating it -If you choose an obscure theme that stops receiving updates, your website might start acting funny x. Blogging -Create a Page called Blog -Do not add any text to this page -Publish the page -Go to Settings and then Reading -For the posts page choose Blog from the menu -Save! -To create articles for the blog, create a Post instead of a Page -These posts will automatically be displayed on the Blog page -Do not turn off the comments as you did when you created Pages
