She openly assumed the stronger role in the relationship and he appeared emotionally lost without his wife beside him. He modified how he carried himself into the battlefield until their relationship came under public scrutiny. The criticism and the ridicule apparently altered the dynamics of the relationship. After the war, Richard asserted male hegemony at a huge cost. Their marriage emerged from the war experience scarred, and serious disagreements remained. The Ewells died within a few days of one another, each struck down by the sudden onset of typhoid fever, before their ongoing marital strife was resolved. Ewell Hesitates in Gettysburg-Culp's Hill and Cemetery Hill DOI: / _pfanz.10 This chapter describes events following the retreat of Union forces. General Ewell must have wanted to pursue the enemy, but it is likely that he began to have second thoughts when his ardor cooled and when, as a corps commander, he began to take stock of his situation and consider Lee's admonition about not bringing on a general engagement until the other divisions had arrived. 2 from Oak Hill when their movements seemed to threaten Rodes' division, but that fight was over. An assault against Cemetery Hill would be a new battle, and General Lee himself was on the field and in command. He also explores other salient features of the fighting, including the Confederate occupation of the town of Gettysburg; the skirmishing in the south end of town and in front of the hills; the use of breastworks on Culp's Hill; and the small but decisive fight between Union cavalry and the Stonewall Brigade. He provides detailed tactical accounts of each stage of the contest and explores the interactions between and decisions made by generals on both sides. General Richard S. Ewell, who had called the meeting, was there with two of his three division commanders, Robert Rodes and Jubal Early. Maj. Gen. Isaac Trimble also sat in on the conversation. Gen Richard Stoddert Ewell, whose troops had just smashed the Union Eleventh Corps and driven it in retreat through the streets of Gettysburg, and who sought to determine if he should push on and try to seize the high ground just south of the town where Union troops were rallying. The other, Union Maj. Gen. Oliver Otis Howard, was on that high ground, Cemetery Hill, and was attempting to organize his badly mauled forces to meet an attack that he believed would soon come. Lee, the commander of the Army of Northern Virginia, planned his retreat to Virginia during the Battle of Gettysburg in July 1863, at the height of the Civil War. Lee discussed with his three commanders Lt. Gen. James Longstreet (First Corps), Lt. Gen. Richard S. Ewell (Second), and Lt. Gen. Ambrose Powell Hill (Third) the details of returning to their base in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. Two roads that were critical to their plan to traverse the South Mountain range were the Chambersburg Pike through Cashtown Pass and the Fairfield Road through Monterey Pass. Both roads led from Gettysburg to the Cumberland Valley, but Lee chose the Fairfield Road and Monterey Pass. The chapter also considers the challenges that Lee had to deal with as he and his army made their tortuous journey back to Virginia, including the shortage of ambulances and spring wagons in the trains to carry all the thousands of sick and wounded.
