1 Appendix E Selection criteria for Talent ID Consideration Place Introduction The Silver Medal Test Standard (MTS) remains the only automatic criteria for selection onto the talent ID programme. If a skater does not attain this standard but achieves a lower Inter-silver MTS and passes the testing detailed below then they will then be offered a consideration place. This assessment will take place at the first Talent ID camp taking place after racing has concluded for the season. The strength in range of movement tests and multi-stage fitness test are being used to evaluate future potential by evaluating measures of performance we currently believe to be the building blocks for the development of World Class performance in short track speed skaters. It must be noted that passing this assessment does not on its own guarantee future world class performance and have been set based upon the best evidence and information currently available to GB Short Track Speed Skating. The assessments will be based on 13 or 14 tests depending on your skating category. The following tests will make up the assessment: 1. Y Balance - R Leg 2. Y Balance - L Leg 3. Standing Broad Jump 4. Hop and Stop (Forwards) - R Leg 5. Hop and Stop (Forwards) - L Leg 6. Hop and Stop (Lateral) - R Leg 7. Hop and Stop (Lateral) - L Leg 8. Deep Squat 9. Knee to Wall ratio - R Leg 10. Knee to Wall ratio - L Leg 11. Skate Sit 12. Single Leg Skate Dip - R Leg 13. Single Leg Skate Dip - L Leg 14. Multi-stage fitness test (20m shuttles) Scoring the tests Boys and Girls Junior D (in the preceding racing season) There are a possible 130 points that can be obtained from the tests 1-13 based on a maximum possible score of 10 in each test. A pass is 78 (average 6 per test)
2 Boys and Girls Junior C and Junior B (in the preceding racing season) There are a possible 140 points that can be obtained from the tests 1-14 based on a maximum possible score of 10 in each test. A pass is 91.0 (average 6.5 per test) The Tests in Detail and points system Test 1 & 2 Y Balance L & R Athletes must stand on one leg on the centre platform with their toes behind the line and push the 3 directional platforms along the reach indicators with the non weight bearing leg in succession whilst maintaining their balance on one leg throughout. Shoes MUST NOT be worn during this test. The Y Balance score is calculated by dividing the total distance pushed (in all three directions) by the individual s leg length measured from Anterior Superior Iliac Spine (or ASIS) to lateral malleolus at the ankle. Our testing demonstrates that there is no difference between genders on this test. Y-Balance Score Points <2.60 1
3 Test 3 Standing Broad Jump Athletes will be instructed in the following manner: Stand with both of your feet behind the line. Jump as far forward as possible landing smoothly without losing your balance. A loss of balance will be classed as any movement of the feet after landing or any other part of the body (e.g. hand) touching the floor. The distance will be measured from the line to the back of the closest heel. Athletes will have the best of 3 jumps recorded. The standing Broad jump result is expressed as a percentage of the individual s height. Our testing demonstrates that there is a difference between genders on this test meaning separate scoring criteria is required. 4 Test 4 & 5 Hop and Stop (Forwards) L & R Athletes will be instructed in the following manner: Stand on one foot facing forward with their toes behind the marked line. Jump as far forward as possible landing smoothly on the same foot without losing your balance. A loss of balance will be classed as any movement of the foot after landing or any other part of the body (e.g. hand/other foot) touching the floor. The distance will be measured from the line to the back of the heel Athletes will have the best of 3 jumps per foot recorded. The hop and stop result is expressed as a percentage of the individual s height. Our testing demonstrates that there is a difference between genders on this test meaning separate scoring criteria is required. Hop and Stop - Forward Girls Boys % Body Height Score % Body Height Score <70 1 <85 1 Test 6 & 7 Hop and Stop (Lateral) L & R Athletes will be instructed in the following manner: Stand on one foot side on to the marked line. (Outside of the foot on the line) Jump as far as possible to the side, landing smoothly on the same foot without losing your balance. A loss of balance will be classed as any movement of the foot after landing or any other part of the body (e.g. hand/other foot) touching the floor. The distance will be measured from the line to the closest part of the foot. Athletes will have the best of 3 jumps per foot recorded. The hop and stop lateral result is expressed as a percentage of the individual s height.
5 Our testing demonstrates that there is a difference between genders on this test meaning separate scoring criteria is required. Hop and Stop - Lateral Girls Boys % Body Height Score % Body Height Score <50 1 <65 1 Test 8 Overhead Deep Squat The overhead squat is a total body movement, scored out of 3 levels using the criteria detailed below. Static photographs will be taken at the bottom of the squat to validate/support the marking. Athletes will be instructed in the following manner: Hold the Dowel with both hands over your head in order for both your shoulders and elbows to remain a 90 degree angle. Now press the dowel over your head and hold it there throughout the squat movement. Place your feet in a comfortable position, approximately shoulder width apart. Point your toes forward and keep them pointing forwards throughout the squat movement. While maintaining an upright posture, the dowel over your head and your heels on the floor, descend into a deep squat in order for your thighs to break parallel with the floor. This position must be held to enable a photograph to be taken Return to standing without losing balance The scoring system will take place as follows:
6 UNABLE Athlete is in pain in any areas of the body. I.e. injury or pain prevents them from participating in the test Our testing demonstrates no differences between genders. Deep Squat Score Points Level 3 10 Level 2 7 Level 1 4 Unable 0 Test 9 & 10 Knee to Wall Ratio L & R
7 A basic KTW distance is a prerequisite for getting lower into the skate position. The result is calculated by the athlete s tibia length divided from the distance away from the wall. The tibia length is measured from the medial joint line of the knee to the tip of the medial malleolus of the ankle. Our testing demonstrates no differences between genders. Knee to Wall Score Points Test 11 & 12 Single Leg Skate Dips L & R 5 single leg dips will be scored subjectively utilising video camera footage from 3 angles; front, side and back. Athletes will be instructed in the following manner: Complete 5 single leg dips on one leg without pausing Taking your knee down to your ankle Keeping your foot flat on the floor Maintaining your hips level throughout Keeping your knee of your standing leg over your toes Without touching any other body part to the floor Keeping your body in skate position
8 Using arm swings Starting and finishing with full extension of the standing leg Shoes MUST NOT be worn during this test. The scoring system will take place as follows: 1 point will be awarded for the inclusion of each of the following elements in each dip 1 point will be deducted for the inclusion of each of the following elements in each dip 1. No pauses of greater than 2 seconds between each dip 2. The Medial Femoral condyle of the knee becoming level with the Medial Malleolus of the ankle 3. No lifting of the heel off the floor 4. Keeping both PSIS of the pelvis level 5. No deviation of the lateral border of the patella medially beyond the second toe 6. No other body parts touching the floor 1. The head lifting more than 45 between the bottom & top of the dip 2. The arm forward at bottom of the dip being the same as the leg standing on 3. The standing leg not reaching full knee extension A total of 30 points calculated from the 6 categories for each of the 5 dips can be gained A total of 15 points calculated from the 3 categories for each of the 5 dips can be lost Our testing demonstrates no differences between genders Single Leg Skate Dip Score Points
9 Test 13 Skate Sit The depth of the skate sit will be measured individually from the height of the tibial tuberosity of the knee and will be marked with a band across 2 posts. This height will create a leg angle of between 0-20 of parallel to the floor. Skaters will be instructed to go down into the skate position with the band touching their ischium (seat bones), their arms on their back and the feet flat on the floor. The time will be stopped as soon as the band is no longer touching their ischium, the band is pushed down the posts 1/2cm below the original height set, skaters arms are removed from their backs or skaters heels raise off the floor. Shoes MUST NOT be worn during this test. The scoring system will be based on the length of time skaters can hold the skate sit position. Our testing demonstrates no differences between genders. 10 Test 14 Multi-stage fitness test This test is an accurate measure of cardiovascular fitness and involves running continuously between two points which are spaced 20m apart according to timings determined by beeps from the test software. Testing demonstrates that there is a difference between genders on this test meaning separate scoring criteria is required. Multi-Stage Fitness Test Girls Boys Level Score Level Score
