1 Graphics I This introductory course explores the basics of graphic design and visual communication through the study of printing processes, the elements of design, page layout, typography, and the exploration of the creative process through sketching, idea development, and graphic software and technology. Unit Description: Graphics I Students will be able to: Learning Goals (Describe what students are expected to know and/or be able to do) Identify & describe design elements & principles of design including balance, emphasis, movement, pattern, proportion, rhythm, and unity. Can apply these principles and elements effectively through the design and production of original artwork. Meets Learning Goal w/ Distinction Meets Learning Goal Progressing Towards Learning Goal Area of Concern Not Yet Taught Experiments with ideas and shows evidence of choices made for expressive effect. Brainstorming, problem solving, and applying lesson criteria. Applies previously learned concepts. Understands, manages and utilizes various design software including the Adobe Creative Suite to effectively, creatively and efficiently complete design work. Students demonstrate ability to independently manage files, print, and problem solve software issues that arise. Develops the technical skills needed to utilize various media, tools and techniques in a safe, developmentally appropriate manner. Create original artwork that meets intended commercial or artistic purpose through the use of color, elements and principles of design, effort and experimentation. Students will be assessed through their daily class performance for productivity, organization and problem solving in meeting deadlines. Students will be expected to demonstrate an understanding of design principles through the production and presentation of original artwork.

Principles/Elements Quiz Activity 3: Basics of Creating Visual Design Intro to CS software. Create a visual demonstration of a principle and element. Critique. First section of PowerPoint Portfolio. CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI End of Unit Assessment Description: Pass all quizzes. understanding of concepts. Begin building portfolio. Unit 2: Typography Activity 1: What is Typography? Explore the history and purpose of typography. Read Typo chapter 4. Writing Reflection. Activity 2: Creating Visual Language Visual language. Typography exercises: positive, negative, color, illustrative. Activity 3: Developing Identity through Brands and Logos Create an original logo based on concepts of study Thumbnail Sketches Original logo and branding. Study electromagnetic spectrum/how we see color/behavior of light. Activity 2: Color Symbolism Explore color meaning, symbolism, design. Creative Color Wheels, Color Schemes, and other exercises. Activity 3: Color Research How is color used in business and advertising? Color Research projects. Create an original design effective use of chosen color. Activity 2: Create Proof of Design and Layout Theme, appropriate decisions, sketches, cover design. Activity 3: Presenting Graphic Design Work Being professional and dealing with clients. Presentation and written evaluation. (PowerPoint) Introduction to Branding and Identity. Activity 2: Business Card Design Study business card standards and specs. Explore various designs and concepts. Create personal cards, working critiques, formal peer edit with steps of art criticism. Activity 3: Intro to Branding and Identity Applying style to multiple printing surfaces. Digital Concept Design. Any/all of the above, plus Applying design to multiple printing surfaces.

5 Unit 7: Screen Printing Activity 1: The Screen Printing Process Materials and process. How it works. Notes and Quiz. Activity 2: Designing and Prepping Developing 1 color designs. Printing on transparency paper. Burning screens. Activity 3: Pulling Prints Printing process. Printing on paper. Printing on fabric, create a T Shirt. Any/all of the above Final Unit: Final Projects and Cumulative Presentation Activity 1: Portfolio Organize semester work in a professional Portfolio (PowerPoint, Prezi, etc ) Activity 2: Choice Project Choose a project from the semester to re create (favorite, most valuable, etc ) Activity 3: Final Portfolio Presentation Professional Portfolio/Resume roleplay.
