WHAT TO DISCARD Discard worn book:. If the subject matter is out of date, mediocre or inaccurate;. If pages are missing or extremely soiled or torn; 3. Where there are sufficient duplicate copies; 4. Where revised editions are decidedly superior. Slightly damaged books promptly repaired do not become so badly damaged that they are lost to the collection while waiting for replacement or rebinding. While no definite rules, applicable at all times, can be laid as to what to discard, what to mend or what to rebind the following suggestions may be used as a guide. WHAT TO MEND Mend books that have:. Torn or loose pages;. Weak or broken hinges; 3. Worn covers which can be repaired quickly and inexpensively. WHAT TO REBIND PROFESSIONALLY Worn books should be sent to a professional bindery:. When replacement copies are not available in a reprint;. When the subject matter is so important it must be replaced immediately, if the worn out copy is not rebound. Order online!

5 Mending Torn Pages with Radiant Bond Glue Protect both sides of mended tear with waxed paper until dry. Where tear has a featured edge you can use Radiant Bond applying it to edges of tear with either a brush or a mending stick. Mending Brushes or Mending Sticks Radiant Bond Glue Waxed Paper Waxed Paper Mending Margins of Pages If margin is torn but with no part missing, use strip of Magic Transparent Tape or Filmoplast P90 Tape or Highland Permanent Mending Tape folding over edge of outer margin. If tears are deep, apply full width of tape on each side of the outer margin and burnish with a bone folder. 6 Mending Torn Pages with Tape The easiest and quickest way to mend torn pages is to use a modern pressuresensitive transparent tape. Filmoplast P is especially good for thin book papers (such as India paper), dictionaries, or encyclopedias. Use it on old rare books where the paper is fragile. Invisible Magic Transparent Tape is especially good for heavier book papers and colour printed children s books. Invisible Magic Mending Tape or Filmoplast P Mending Tape or Document Repair Tape Plastic or Bone Folder Pull a piece of tape from the roll at least /" longer than the tear. With Invisible Magic Tape: Without touching the tape to the page (it has an aggressive adhesive) carefully centre the tape over the tear. With Filmoplast P: Since Filmoplast P has a less aggressive adhesion, you can lay the tape on the tear and re align it if necessary. Allow the tape to extend /4" beyond the edge of the page. Fold the remaining /4" of tape over the edge of the paper. Apply the tape to both sides of the tear. This will ensure that the tears are properly repaired. 3 To make the tape adhere properly, it should be rubbed down with a plastic or bone folder. Hint: Never use cellophane tape for book mending. It turns yellow and will bleed, causing two pages to stick together. Likewise, gummed transparent paper tape will yellow with age and lose its adhesive power. 4 Order online!

7 Inserting Loose Pages Plates, illustrations or maps are not usually bound in a book, but merely tipped in at the binding margin. When a single printedpage is found loose, it is usually due to a deliberate willful action or to defective sewing. In some cases, this condition may indicate the need for complete resewing. Where illustrations or plates or single loose pages are found, they should be tipped in immediately so there is no danger of their being lost. If inner margin of loose page is torn, use a strip of Filmoplast P as a hinge, applying one half to loose page, other half to inner margin of next page. Mending Brush or Mending Sticks Radiant Bond Glue Waxed Paper Filmoplast P (additional) The quickest and most permanent method of tipping in a loose page in a bound book is to use Radiant Bond as follows: Carefully apply Radiant Bond to the binding edge of the loose page, using the side of the brush or a mending stick. Next insert the loose page deep into the V opening making certain that the outer margins are in line with the other pages. 3 Place Waxed Paper on both sides of the page, fitting the waxed paper well to the back of the binding margin. A book is made up of a group of signatures or sections. A loose signature usually indicates serious trouble with the sewing and as a rule requires resewing or rebinding by a professional bindery. If the book is not to be resewn or rebound, temporary repairs can be made by edging each folded page with Radiant Bond using either a Brush or a Mending Stick (Plastic Bone Folder). 3 Apply a strip of Radiant Bond to V opening of book. Replace signature in proper location and press down with a Plastic Folder. 6 Order online!

9 Rebacking a Worn Book Cover Separated from Contents using Cloth Tape Cloth Tape (colour choice) Construction Paper Plastic or Bone Folders Scissors along Cut contents from case, separating two parts of book the hinge. Measure distance between inside edges of two covers. Then separate two cover boards by cutting off the cloth back. 3 edge Trim away old cloth extending beyond of board. 4 Cut a piece of Construction paper on the tape. Strip should be equal to the length of the cover. 5 as Put boards on cloth tape spacing covers same distance apart original cover. 6 Fold Cloth Tape over Construction paper and rub down firmly on the two covers with a plastic folder. Score overlap with plastic folder along inside edge of boards. 7 Turn cover over and with a plastic folder score or crease the tape along the inside edges of the cover. Call Fax

10 Text Assemble goes here Cover & Contents with Double Stitched Binder Tape Double Stitched Binder Tape Mending Brush Plastic or Bone Folders Radiant Bond Glue Select Double Stitched Binder tape of proper width, making sure each row of stitching lies along each edge of contents. Cut a piece /8" less than length of contents. Coat inside of white cloth with Radiant Bond. Attach binder to back of contents as shown. Rub spine with folder. Lay contents on table. Pull flaps down over contents until the row of stitching lines up with edge of contents. Repeat on other side. Then apply Radiant Bond to inside of white gummed cloth. 3 With cover flat on table top, fit the contents into the back, centering contents between edges of cover. Make sure contents go in right side up. Close book, and with index finger doubled, push contents into back. Rub spine with folder. Note: If only one side of book requires repair, Single Stitched Binder Tape may be used. 8 Order online!

11 Repairing worn back book cover (without removing contents) Cloth Book Tape (colour choice) Scissors Plastic Folder Self-adhesive Coloured Cloth Tape is the ideal material for temporary repairs of a badly worn back of a cover. It has tremendous strength will not spoil in storage nor will the outside cloth surface become sticky in hot, humid weather. Follow the easy steps shown below for measuring correct amount of tape for each job. Take a roll of Cloth Book Tape and unwind or 3 inches. (Use tape about -/" inches wider than the back of the book to be mended.) Place a Plastic Folder across the end, lining its outside edge with the end of the tape. Then, using the folder as a handle, unwind the tape a few inches longer than the height of the book. 3 Lay tape across the book cover, sticky side up. Allow the Plastic Folder to hang over the end so top edge of folder is even with top edge of book cover. 4 Place a second Plastic Folder across the tape at the point where it crosses the other end of the book. Again, top edge of folder should be even with edge of book cover. 5 Cut the tape along the outside edge of the second Plastic Folder 6 Result: you have a strip of tape the length of the book, plus the width of the two plastic folders. Leave tape in the position shown, with the plastic folders hanging over each end. Call Fax

12 Additional Materials Construction Paper If cloth back has been torn entirely away from cover, follow these steps before applying Cloth Book Tape. 7 Cut a strip of Construction paper, making it as long as the book you re mending and as wide as the thickness of the spine of the book. Lay the paper strip down the centre of your Cloth Book Tape so it reaches from one plastic folder to the other. 8 Picking up the tape by the plastic folders, align a 3/4" width along the front hinge of the book as shown. Never cover any printing on front cover. Press down lightly. Remove plastic folders by pulling them carefully down and away. 9 other Bring tape across back of book and press down lightly on the cover. 0 outer Cut from the end of the tape to the cover as shown. Do the same at the opposite end. Cut triangular corner off of flaps. Fold corners of center flaps over. Fold down outer flaps on inside of each cover board. 3 4 Open the book half way. Press wedge shaped ends of the tape down into the spine of the book with a plastic folder. 0 Order online! Lay the book on its side, and crease the hinge grooves with the end of a plastic folder. Then rub down flat surfaces with the flat edge of the folder to complete the job.

13 Quick Tricks Temporary Repairs to Covers Cloth Tape (colour choice) Radiant Bond Glue Waxed Paper You can prolong the life of a book by using these quick tricks to avoid later and more serious damage to covers of books.. Borrowers in pulling a book off the shelf, will start tears in the top of the cloth spine or the hinge of the cover. Place a piece of waxed paper between spine and contents, repair tear in either spine or hinge by working Radiant Bond into fibres of cloth. Put waxed paper around mended spine and allow to dry. 3. Sometimes a book is pulled off of the shelf by the bottom 4 of the cloth spine, starting a tear in the hinge. Repair with Radiant Bond as described above. 3. The bottom edge of the cover often is frayed by friction with the shelf. Touch up and work frayed threads into place using Radiant Bond on your finger. Then allow to dry. 4. Lower corners of covers become frayed easily. Touch up corners with Radiant Bond and allow to dry. Radiant Bond dries to a transparency. Repairing Worn Corners Cloth Tape (colour choice) Scissors Use 4" Cloth Book Tape of a colour compatible with the colour of the binding (or if book has been rebacked the same colour as the rebacking). Cut four 4" square pieces. of Centre 4" square of tape diagonally over corner, making sure that /" of square protrudes beyond corner book. 3 on Inside of Cover Pull centre triangular piece over corner and smooth down firmly cover. Inside of Cover Open cover of book. Make two cuts to edge of book. Start from corner and line up cut with edge of lining paper of cover. Inside of Cover 4 Pull remaining two triangular pieces over edges of cover and over centre triangle. Repeat same procedure on other three corners. Call Fax

14 Strengthening Weak Hinges of a Cover Radiant Bond Glue Waxed Paper Plastic or Bone Folder Mending Stick The first sign of trouble in a trade binding is a weak hinge. It calls for immediate correction and repair. Make it the responsibility of a staff member to inspect each book before it is put back on the shelf. If it has a weak hinge, repair it at once it only takes a minute. Follow these instructions: Open the book in upright position so the cloth back separates from the body. Now using a mending stick apply Radiant Bond carefully to the hinge area of the book spine only. Work half way down from one end, then reverse the book and work from the other end. If paper lining of cover and mull have pulled loose, apply Radiant Bond with narrow brush and adhere both to cover. Insert a sheet of waxed paper between each cover and contents. Close book. Be careful not to apply to the inside of the cloth spine or the the back of the signatures. Press book well into cover. Use flat edge of plastic folder to score hinges. 3 If paper lining of cover is broken or torn, reinforce entire length of hinge with -/" wide White Paper or Cloth Hinge Tape. Order online!

15 Opening a New or Repaired Book A new book, or one just repaired, is stiff. To avoid damaging the book, follow directions below for opening. Stand book lengthwise on its back, holding contents upright. Run thumb or index finger gently along hinge of each cover. Score or crease gently 5 or 0 pages at a time alternately front and back, starting with outside signatures. When middle of book is reached, pages should lay open flat. 16 Reinforcing Paperback Covers with Book Tape Scotch C 7 Taping System Applicator Transparent Book Tape (various widths) Depress the platform and slide the book under the cutter lip with the spine facing right. (The outrigers can be extended to support large books.) Line up the lower corner of the book s spine on the spine guide. Pull the tape out to the end of the book cover and line up the edge of the tape parallel with the spine. Press the tape down on the book and slide the cutter to trim the tape. Press down and slide back to release the book. 3Press the tape down along the spine of the book. 4Slide the book across the applicator to adhere the tape to the opposite cover of the book. 4 Order online!

17 How to Apply Carr McLean Book Jacket Covers Book Jacket Covers with paper backing Book Jacket Cover Attachment Tape How to apply covers with paper backing Place book jacket cover on table or desk with paper side up. Insert book jacket (printed face down), sliding the book jacket into the book jacket as shown. Fold paper back along edge of book jacket for perfect, straight fit. 3 Next, remove protective cover from face of anchoring tape and fold transparent film over on to paper back and press down anchoring tape surface to anchor in position. 4 Crease film with folder to a straight perfect fit. Now jacket is ready to replace on book and fasten to inside front and back cover with Book Jacket Cover Attachment Tape. Call Fax

18 How to Apply Duraform Covers without Paper Backing Duraform Book Jacket Cover Plastic or Bone Folder Insert bottom of paper dust jacket into folded edge of Duraform. Remove anchor tab covering spot of adhesive and fold edge snugly to top of dust jacket. Adhesive will hold it in place. 3 Crease the Duraform using a plastic folder. 19 Protect Paperbacks with Vistafoil To substantially increase the effective life of paperback books, journals, etc. use Carmac Vistafoil. Scissors Vistafoil Ruler Vistatape, Carmac Super Clear Tape, Hinge Tape, or J Lar Tape 3 4 Cut from a roll of Vistafoil a length equal to the total width of the front and back covers and the spine, plus two inches for overlapping. Separate the foil from approximately one inch of the backing sheet and place a ruler on the exposed sticky edge. The remaining backing can now be easily removed. Place one cover of the closed book on the foil with its front edge against the ruler and equi-distant from the top and bottom edges of the foil. Fold the remaining foil over the spine and the other cover, smoothing out any creases and air bubbles. Make two cuts at each end of the spine at an angle. Open the book and after removing the ruler cut the four corners diagonally as shown on the diagram, leaving /4" between each corner of the book and the edge of the foil. Fold the front and back edges, followed by the top and bottom ensuring the corners are completely covered. 5 Open the book slightly and tuck the remaining flaps into the spine or trim flush with the top and bottom edges. Reinforce Hinge on inside front and back cover using J-Lar, Cloth Hinge Tape, Carmac Super-Clear Tape or Vistatape. Call Fax

20 Protect Paperbacks with Vistaflex Scissors Vistatape Vistaflex Cut two panels the size of the book you are covering, but /4" less than the width. Peel the backing sheet from the foil. 3 the Stick the backing down to the edges of the book leaving the /4" gap at spine. 4 the Cut a strip of Vistatape the length of book. 5 to A strip of Vistatape is then applied to the spine, overlapping the Vistaflex complete the task. 6 Vistatape To strengthen the hinges of the front and rear pages of the book just apply at these points. 8 Order online!

21 Repairing Loose Paperback Covers Paperback covers tend to come off very easily. To prevent this from happening, reinforce your paperback with Radiant Bond. Mending Brush Radiant Bond Glue Waxed Paper Holding the contents of the paperback in one hand and the coverhalves in the other, pull the cover completely away from the contents. Brush Radiant Bond onto the exposed backs of the signatures and allow to dry. 3 Then coat the inside of the spine of the cover with Radiant Bond and reattach the cover properly to the contents. Place wax paper between the cover-halves and the first and last pages of the book. Put under weight overnight. Repairing A Torn Spine To repair a torn spine, simply brush Radiant Bond over the torn sections and allow to dry. Call Fax

22 The Care of Magazines... Single Copies Current single copies of magazines can be kept in more usable shape if the covers are fastened more securely to the contents. Here are ways of reinforcing single copies: Heavy-duty Stapler Radiant Bond Glue Mending Brush If a magazine is saddle-stitched, such as Life, Time or Post, fold back the cover and apply Radiant Bond along the edge of the spine of the contents. If you have a heavy duty stapler, staple both ends of cover to contents. As an extra reinforcement, some libraries use a narrow strip of Transparent Book-binding Tape or Transparent Reinforcing Tape along the back, stapling through the tape. 3 If magazine is side-stapled like National Geographic or Reader s Digest, first peel back cover as shown. 4 Apply Radiant Bond to back of contents. 26 Glossary DOCUMENT REPAIR TAPE A unique combination of very thin, strong acidfree tissue coated with acidfree adhesive, the Document Repair Tape is non-yellowing, reversible and serves as a self-adhesive mending tissue that has no equal.
