4 Key Results of the AISHE (Provisional) Survey covers entire Higher Education Institutions in the country. Institutions are categorized in 3 broad Categories;, College and Stand-Alone Institutions. There are 757 Universities, Colleges and Stand Alone Institutions and out of them 716 Universities, Colleges and 6837 Stand Alone Institutions have responded during the survey. Whole survey was conducted through online mode for which a dedicated portal ( has been developed. The e-version of DCF expands according to the structure/size of the Institution. No investigator is sent to the Institution to collect the data. One unique feature is that the filled in DCFs are always available on the portal, which can be seen by the Institutions and higher level authorities. 267 Universities are privately managed. There are 43 Central Universities, 1 Central and 13 Open Universities, 69 Institutes of National Importance, 316 Public Universities, 5 Institute under Legislature Act, 37 Deemed Universites Government and 6 Other Universities. The top 7 s in terms of highest number of colleges in India are Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Telangana.College density, i.e. the number of college per lakh eligible population (population in age-group years) varies from 7 in Bihar to 58 in Puducherry as compared to average of 27. In UTs of Andaman & Nicobar Island, Dadra & Nagar Haveli, Daman & Diu and Lakshadweep, there is no. 76% Colleges are privately managed; 61% Private-Unaided and 15% Private Aided. Andhra Pradesh and Telangana has 83% and 82% Private Unaided Colleges respectively, whereas, Mizoram has only 3%, Chandigarh has 4% and Tripura has 9%; Bihar and Assam has only 10% Private Unaided Colleges. Total Enrolment in Higher Education has been estimated to be 33.3 million with 17.9 million boys and 15.4 million girls. Girls constitute 46% of the total enrolment. Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) in Higher Education in India is 23.6, which is calculated for years of age group. GER for male population is 24.5 and female it is For Scheduled Castes, it is 18.5 and for Scheduled tribes, it is 13.3 as compared to the national GER of i
5 Distance enrolment constitutes 11.7% of the total enrolment in higher education, of which 46% are female students. About 80% students are enrolled in Undergraduate level Programme students are enrolled in Ph.D. that is about 0.34% of the total student enrolment. Uttar Pradesh comes at number one with the highest student enrolment followed by Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu. Scheduled Castes students constitute 13.4% and Scheduled tribes students 4.8% of the total enrolment. 32.9% students belong to Other Backward Classes. 4.4% students belong to Muslim Minority and 1.9% from other Minority Community. The total number of teachers is Out of which more than half about 61% are male teachers and 39% are female teachers. At all India level there are merely 64 female teachers per 100 male teachers. Pupil Teacher Ratio (PTR) in Universities and Colleges is 24. ii
6 An Overview Survey on Higher Education (AISHE) was initiated in 2011 during which data for the year was collected. The survey was utmost necessary as none of the source of data on Higher education was giving complete picture of higher education in the country. The entire survey is being conducted through electronic mode and a dedicated portal was developed for the purpose, thus making the exercise completely paperless. The survey covered all the Institutions in the country engaged in imparting the higher education. Data is being collected on several parameters such as teachers, student enrolment, programmes, examination results, education finance, infrastructure etc. Indicators of educational development such as Institution Density, Gross Enrolment Ratio, Pupil Teacher Ratio, Gender Parity Index etc. are calculated from the data collected through AISHE. These are useful in making informed policy decisions and research for development of education sector. Reference Period for AISHE : Reference date for filling up the Data Capture Formats is 30 th September, The number of institutions, teachers and students has been recorded on the basis of their actual number as on 30 th September, Information in respect of Examination Result has been collected for the students passed out/ awarded degree on or before 30 th December 2014 for the academic year Financial Information has been recorded for the financial year i.e. 1 st April 2013 to 31 st March : During , 757 Universities were listed and they were requested to upload the data. The state-wise number of universities with types is shown in Table-1. Out of them, 716 Universities data were used to prepare the report after pooling from previous 2 years. College: Only affiliated and constituent institutions of Central and Universities have been counted as colleges. Constituent units of deemed/private universities, Off-campus centers and Recognised centers have not been counted as Colleges. There are colleges. The number of colleges has increased by 4% from last year. The growth is displayed in the following figure 1: AISHE (P) Page 1 of 5
7 Majority of the Colleges, (76%) are privately managed, 61% Private-unaided and 15% Private-aided. -wise, Management-wise distribution of Colleges is shown in Table-3. As evident from the table, there are wide variations among states in number of private colleges. STUDENT ENROLMENT Total Student enrolment has been classified in 8 levels viz Ph.D., M.Phil., Post Graduate, Under Graduate, PG Diploma, Diploma, Certificate and Integrated. Percentage share of student enrolment in these levels are shown in Figure 2. -wise and level-wise estimated student enrolment is given in Table 4. -wise student enrolment through regular mode at various level is given in Table 4 (a). The highest numbers of students are seen enrolled at Under Graduate level across India. Out of the total 3,32,72,722 students, a vast majority of 2,65,76,140 students are enrolled in Under Graduate that is a sweeping 79.9%. On the other hand, second to Under Graduate, 11.45% students are enrolled in Post-Graduation which is approximately 38.1 lakh students. Taking a look at the Male-Female ratio at each level in Figure 3, the trend is of higher males than females in almost every level, except M.Phil. Post Graduate and Certificate, wherein, the female enrolment is slightly higher than male enrolment. Student enrolment at Under Graduate level has 53% male and 47% female. Post Graduate level has 49% males and 51% females. Diploma has an unbalanced distribution with 72% males and 28% females. Ph.D. level has 60% male and 40% female. Integrated level has 63% male and 37% female. PG Diploma student enrolment projects the most lopsided picture with 55% AISHE (P) Page 2 of 5
8 male students and 26% female students. There are more than 76% colleges running in Private sector; aided and unaided taking together, but it caters only 63% of the total enrolment. It shows lower per college enrolment in private sector. -wise enrolment in Private and Government Colleges as per response is given in Table 3(a). GROSS ENROLMENT RATIO IN HIGHER EDUCATION (18-23 Years) Estimated Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) in Higher education in India is 23.6%, which is calculated for years of age group. For Scheduled Castes it is 18.5% and for Scheduled Tribes it is 13.3%. -wise GER and GPI are shown in Table 11 and Table 12 respectively. GER for male population at all India level is 24.5% whereas for SC Males, it is 19.3% and 14.6% for ST males. Similarly GER for female population at all India level is 22.7% whereas for SC females are 17.6% and for ST females, it is 12.0%. For international comparability, GER has also been calculated taking years Population and it comes out to be 27.4 at Level. There is gradual increase in Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) in almost all the s in the country over the year. The graph showing GER of last three year i.e , and in figure 5. TEACHING POSITION: The total number of teachers has been estimated to be 14,18,389. Out of which more than half about 61% are male teachers and 39% are female teachers. Taking into account all types of Institutions (, Colleges & Stand-Alone Institution), Pupil Teacher Ratio (PTR) at level comes out to be 23 and 21 if only regular enrolment is considered. In case of and its Colleges PTR is slightly higher 24 and 21 respectively. AISHE (P) Page 3 of 5

10 ENROLMENT IN DIFFERENT TYPES OF UNIVERSITIES There are 12 types of universities and the level wise enrolment each type of universities, teaching departments and constituent universities/off-campus centres are given in Table 16(a). Total numbers of students enrolled are 63.7 lakhs. In Public share of Ph.D. students is large (31580) followed by Institutes of National Importance (22022). Share of female students is lowest in Private Open (22) followed by Institutes Under Legislature Act (1344) whereas the share is highest in Public. Share of female students in Central and Public Universities are 46.2% and 47.5% respectively. Level-wise enrolment in affiliated and constituent colleges of Central and universities are given in Table 16(b). Category wise enrolment in various types of universities is given in Table 16A. In Table 16B enrolment in PWD and minority enrolment in various types of universities are given. There are wide variations in representations of different categories in various types of universities.
