Agenda Review Firewall Management Summary 1/23
Which of the following statement is true? A. A firewall is a hardware device. B. A firewall is a software program. C. A firewall can be a piece of hardware or software, or a combination of both hardware and software. D. A firewall is a wall between America and Mexico aiming at preventing illegal crossings - proposed by Donald Trump. 2/23
Firewalls. (Choose all that apply.) A. Prevent unauthorized outside users from accessing a network. B. Make America great again. C. Prevent inside users from transmitting sensitive information or accessing unsecured resources. D. Make web server and server faster. 3/23
Explain rule No.6 and No.7 of the following stateless packet filtering policy. Image source: Guide to Network Defense and Countermeasures - Randy Weaver, Dawn Weaver, Dean Farwood 4/23
Explain rule No.6 and No.7 of the following stateless packet filtering policy. Image source: Guide to Network Defense and Countermeasures - Randy Weaver, Dawn Weaver, Dean Farwood Rule No.7: All other traffic not addressed in the rule set will be denied. When a packet hits a firewall, rules are tested one after another. As soon as a match is found, the prescribed action is taken. 4/23
Stateful packet filtering determines whether to allow or block packets based on A. Information (maintained in the state table) about current connections. B. IP address. C. Port number. D. TCP flags. E. Size of the packets. 5/23
Basic Terminologies DMZ: Demilitarized zone, sometimes referred to as a perimeter network. A subnetwork exposes an organization s external-facing service to the public network, therefore, an external node only has direct access to equipments in the DMZ, rather than any other part of the internal network. NAT: Network Address Translation. A method of remapping one IP address space into another by modifying network address information in Internet Protocol (IP) datagram packet headers while they are in transit across a traffic routing device. - Wikipedia Bastion hosts: Computers that are accessible to untrusted hosts. Honeypot: A computer placed on the network perimeter to attract attackers so that they stay away from critical servers on the network. 6/23

Enterprise-Level Firewall Management Firewall is not just packet filtering, it can have multiple functions. Proxy server Network Address Translation (NAT) Honeypots 9/23
Proxy Server What is proxy server used for? 10/23
Proxy Server What is proxy server used for? Cache Web pages for faster access. Shield internal host IP addresses. Enforce Internet access and data security - e.g., block Web sites. Make your traffic appear to come from somewhere else. 10/23
Proxy Server - Cache Web Pages for Faster Access 11/23
Proxy Server - Shield Internal Host IP Addresses 12/23
Proxy Server - Block Web Sites 13/23
NAT - Network Address Translation Provide security - Internal network use private IP addresses, not routable on the Internet. Conserve the public IP address space. 14/23
NAT - One-to-One NAT Map one internal IP address to one external IP address. Sources: Guide to Network Defense and Countermeasures - Randy Weaver, Dawn Weaver, Dean Farwood 15/23
NAT - Many-to-One NAT Map many internal IP addresses to one external IP address. 16/23
Sources: Libvirt wiki page: 17/23
Difference Between Proxy Server and NAT? 18/23
Difference Between Proxy Server and NAT? Applications are generally not aware that NAT is taking place. No client side configuration is needed. Proxies can be used across the Internet, even if the traffic wouldn t normally take that route. 18/23
Honeypots A computer placed on the network perimeter to attract attackers so that they stay away from critical servers on the network. May be equipped with files that appear to be important to the company. May be configured with security holes so that it seems vulerable to known attacks. 19/23
Honeypots 20/23
Honeypots What is honeypot used for? 21/23
Honeypots What is honeypot used for? Divert attackers from real files - misdirect them to files of no value. Identify attackers (by using logs). Providing indications of how real network computers might be attacked. 21/23
Summary An enterprise level firewall could include multiple functions - proxy server, NAT, honeypots. Proxy server: originally designed to improve Web access performance by caching Web pages for multiple clients; now used to perform firewall tasks as well as Web caching. NAT is used to protect internal clients from direct access by untrusted, external hosts and to decreases the need for public IP addresses. 22/23
