some useful websites resume template what to wear to a job interview interview tips what s a resume and why do I need one? writing a cover letter
what s a resume and why do i need one??? A resume is your way of introducing yourself to a potential employer. In many cases it will be your first point of contact with an employer. Your resume will determine if you are to be considered for the position you really want. A resume tells an employer what skills and abilities you have and why you would be an asset to their business. A resume should provide an employer with enough information about you that they will want to interview you for a position. how to make your resume look outstanding Before you send out your resume take the time to check its appearance is it a clean copy? Make sure you have no spelling errors, the document has the correct punctuation and you have capital letters where there should be with the remainder of the text being in lower case. Spend a couple of dollars (usually about $2 for 5) on some flat file display folders to present your resume in. Ensure you write a cover letter to go with your application and attach any relevant certificates or awards at the back of your resume which may give you a winning edge over your competitors.
some important information Special child employment laws apply to all children and young people under 18. These laws aim to: protect you from doing work that may be harmful to your health and safety, or physical, mental, moral and social welfare; and ensure that work does not interfere with your education when you are supposed to be at school. there are no age restrictions on doing voluntary work or working in the entertainment industry; generally the minimum age for employment is 13 years although some employers will not employ you before you are 14 years and 9 months. Information sourced from: some useful websites Think about the employer and what they want to find in the person they hire. Does the position require someone who is highly organized, for example? If yes, find a way to fit that into your resume, in whichever category is most appropriate. Every employer is looking for two things when they hire. They want someone who has the skills to do the job, and they want someone who will be a good fit for the workplace. In other words, find a way to show you won't be a nightmare to supervise and you'll be ahead of a lot of other applicants.
nb: It is important to remember whatever you put into your resume or applications make sure it is the truth about yourself. If you say you have a skill you may be asked about this at interview and you have to be able to support whatever you have said in the resume. Don t think because you have only had a part-time job or even haven t yet had a job as not having anything to put into a Resume. Employers realise you are a student and don't expect you to have tons of experience. Here's how you write a Resume. One or two pages are more than sufficient. Your Resume will need to include the following categories: 1. Name and Contact Information 2. Career Objective / Job Objective (examples below) 3. Education and subjects studied at school 4. Work History 5. Volunteer Activities 6. Awards and Recognition 7. Personal Qualities 8. Skills and Abilities 9. Hobbies and Interests 10. Referees 11. Letter of Support from Parents/ Guardians
1. name and contact information Name Address and Telephone and contacts Date of Birth 2. career objective / job objective (examples below) I wish to gain casual employment, which will enable me to gain experience and knowledge to help establish my future career, preferably in the (whatever) Industry. To obtain casual or part time employment whilst continuing my studies. Through participating in a school- based traineeship I will gain knowledge, skills and experience within the (whatever) industry. On completion of my studies my goal is to gain fulltime employment in this industry. I would like to obtain a school- based traineeship within the (whatever) Industry. I believe the skills and experience I would gain in this traineeship would greatly enhance my chances of securing an apprenticeship on completion of my senior schooling. My career objective is to gain employment as an Apprentice Diesel Fitter in a wellestablished local industry where I will have the opportunity to increase my skills, knowledge and understanding of business operations. 3. education and subjects studied at school Indicate what year level you are in at school and what school you attend. Add the subjects you are studying. You can expand on your subjects by adding your semester results.
4. work history Make sure you list all of your paid work from the most recent. This means even work such as fruit and vege picking. You should include Business Name, Job Title, dates worked (or approx time worked there) and duties performed. Also list every job/skill even the small ones that you have undertaken in casual employment, work experience/placement, voluntary work or even work you have done for your family. Have you done any babysitting, lawn mowing, a paper delivery round all this forms part of your work history and should be included in your Resume. 5. volunteer activities This is where you need to spend some time thinking. Have you participated in school council or other committees? Have you volunteered your time with any community organization or church? This is the place to have it. 6. awards and recognition Mention any thing you may have achieved, for example sporting and community awards, school awards etc. Omit this if nothing comes to mind. What qualities do you have that would make you an attractive employee? Hardworking Reliable Confident Easy to get along with Perform duties to the best of my ability Sense of humour Friendly and outgoing Enthusiastic Punctual Diligent and hardworking Polite and respectful Loyal List any other personal qualities you may have
Think about skills and abilities you may have gained while you have participated in sports, worked with other students on a group project or assignment, heave learned by doing work experience, helping out at home or on the job. Tick the skills and abilities you have an include them in your Resume. Customer service experience Listening skills Ability to follow instructions Can work unsupervised Shows initiative Interacts well with people Can use power tools (list) Willing to learn and undertake training Enjoy working in a team environment Can work under pressure Always put in 100% effort Honour commitments Am able to solve problems Can use an Eftpos machine Am confident handling cash Am able to use a cash register Computer skills including and word processing List any other skills you may have 9. hobbies and interests List what you like to do out of school hours whether it is sport, craft, music etc. 10. referees This should be someone willing to give a telephone reference about you. It s good to have someone known in the community such as a business owner, teacher, minister of religion, etc. You could separate the referees into work and personal. Make sure you ask the person to be a referee before putting them on your resume. 11. letter of support from parents/guardian: It is helpful to an employer to know that as you need to rely on a parent or guardian to get you to and from work on time that they will be supportive. Ask you parent or guardian to write you a letter indicating this support and attach it to your Resume.
