2 Pain 2 Superficial somatic pain (or cutaneous pain) is caused by injury to the skin or superficial tissues. Produce a sharp, well-defined, localized pain of short duration. Examples of injuries that produce cutaneous pain include minor wounds, and minor (first degree) burns. Deep somatic pain originates from ligaments, tendons, bones, blood vessels, fasciae, and muscles. It is detected with somatic nociceptors. The scarcity of pain receptors in these areas produces a dull, aching, poorly-localized pain of longer duration than cutaneous pain; examples include sprains, broken bones, and myofascial pain. Visceral pain originates from body's viscera, or organs. Visceral nociceptors are located within body organs and internal cavities. Cryolight is useful in Superficial and Deep somatic pain

3 3 Conventional Pain Management with Cold therapy Cold Packs and Cold Therapy (Cryotherapy) Cold therapy produces vasoconstriction, which slows circulation reducing inflammation, muscle spasm, and pain. Superficial cold is available in many forms including a variety of commercial cold packs, ice cubes, iced towels/compresses, and forms of hydrotherapy. The duration of cold therapy is less than heat therapy; usually less than 15 minutes. The effect of cold is known to last longer than heat. Cold or ice should never to applied directly to the skin. A barrier, such as a toweling, should be placed between the cold agent and the skin's surface to prevent skin and nerve damage.

6 6 Cryolight How to treat? CRYOLIGHT's highly intelligent technology enables exact measurement of the degree of cold directly at the centre of the site of treatment. At the specified treatment distance, liquid carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) at a pressure of approx. 0.2 to 0.4 bar is fired through the pistol at the site to be treated. Measurement of the skin temperature in the area being treated and the automatic switching off function allow for precise work on the face or on recently sutured wounds.

7 7 Cryolight Mode of Action Due to the cold shock, the brain receives a signal through the nerves that causes the blood vessels to dilate and the lymph channels to activate. Inflammatory substances (such as prostaglandin, serotonin and histamine) are broken down by this process and pain is relieved. Lymph pump stimulation speeds up this process. Inflammation, swelling and haematomas resolve within a very short period and healing is speeded up. As a result of the pain relief, the muscles relax and tension resolves.
