1 The Coming of the Holy Spirit: Pentecost Acts 2: 1-4 (shorter) and 2: 1-11 (longer) Prepare to Hear the Word: Teachers: Read the passage carefully yourself ( Decide whether you will use the shorter or longer story. Do a close reading: ie identify any terms, places or roles you are not familiar with and check their meaning on Pupils: 1 Explain: Christians celebrate the festival of Pentecost (Pentecost Sunday) in the Church today. Why? Because it recalls and celebrates an event which took place not long after the death and resurrection of Jesus. Make a mindmap of what pupils know about Pentecost and Pentecost Sunday. This passage was written by Luke, author of the Gospel of Luke. (see the opening verses of both works for links). Recall other passages you may have read by Luke and what we know about Luke. This passage is a recount: it recounts an event. Recall some of the features of recounts as a literary form. This passage has three settings: a physical, geographical setting (Jerusalem) two time settings it occurs after the death and resurrection of Jesus it occurs during the festival of Pentecost. Pentecost is the Jewish festival of Shavuot. Contextualise the passage by recalling what has happened in the previous weeks. Plot the events: Thousands of Jews, including Jesus, have gathered to celebrate Passover. During the festival, Jesus has been arrested, tried and crucified. He has also risen from the dead and appeared to some of the disciples. It is now 50 days after Passover: Jews have again gathered in Jerusalem to celebrate Shavuot: (called Pentecost in Greek pente meaning 50.) 1 Use your professional judgment to prepare pupils according to their age and ability
2 Hear and Encounter the Word Hear the Word: Tell this story in your own words using concrete materials if possible. AND/OR Put the passage into the IWB and do a close reading with your pupils to ensure they know the terminology. AND/OR Ask your pupils to find this passage in the Bible and do a close reading of it. 3 Holy Spirit Note the similes Luke uses to describe the Holy Spirit. List all the characteristics of fire and wind and find those that could apply to the Spirit. Have pupils suggest what Luke might have meant in comparing the Spirit to fire or wind. Complete sentences: Luke thinks the Spirit is Jesus would have called the Spirit ruach. Ruach is a Hebrew word which literally means breath or wind. Blow up red balloons and put strings on them. Use luggage tags (or similar) to label the balloons: ruach on one side, breath or wind on the other. Luke does not say where the tongues of fire touched the disciples. Ask pupils to think where the Spirit might have touched them and why. Have pupils draw pictures of the Spirit touching the disciples. Look online at pictures of Pentecost and see where artists have drawn the fire of the Spirit. What are these artists trying to say? This event is often called the coming of the Spirit. Have pupils debate whether this is a good title or not. (Remember that Luke has told us that the spirit has been present from the opening words of his Gospel look them up!) Christians believe the Spirit is with them (individually and collectively as a Church) now. Invite pupils to suggest how this passage confirms this belief. The Spirit is called the giver of life. Ask pupils to make a Character Fruits Tre of the new life that one of the disciples might have had as a result of the coming of the Spirit. Draw on the notion of the Spirit being the breath of God and make speech bubbles of beliefs about the Spirit: its nature and action. Catholics believe. Invite pupils to identify ways Catholics express belief in the Spirit in prayer, ritual action, creed or sacrament. (You may be able to direct them to previous learning about baptism, the Creed, the Sign of the Cross etc) Have them make a mobile which contains words and pictures which show how Luke s story is lived in the practises of our Tradition now. As well as fire, the Spirit is sometimes imaged as a dove. Have pupils vote on which image they prefer ands why. Look at Vestments or religious artefacts to see images of doves/fire. Ask pupils to design a stole using ONLY images from Luke s passage. Belief in the Holy Spirit was confirmed at the Council of Constantinople in 381. Have pupils research this creed and see how belief in the Holy Spirit came to be expressed in the Nicene Creed.
4 Shavuot remembered and celebrated two realities of Jewish life: Moses being given the Ten Commandments at Sinai, and the offering of the first of the new crops at the Temple. Look up pictures of the Temple and draw pictures of people flocking to the Temple with their gifts of food. Pentecost Sunday is sometimes called the Birthday of the Church. Have pupils use the passage to explain why the Church considers that this event was its birth. The Catholic Church celebrates Pentecost 50 days after Easter. Look at the Psalm used on Pentecost Sunday this year (Resources below) and have pupils make a class big book which identifies the many riches of our world with God s Spirit blowing over them. Pentecost The festival of Shavuot would have brought Jews from all over the region to the Temple. Luke lists many places the people have gathered from. Have pupils consider how Luke uses the great crowd to teach about the power of the Spirit. What is Luke trying to say about the Holy Spirit? Today Jews sometimes celebrate the festival of Shavuot by eating only dairy products. This replicates how their ancestors ate while they waited for Moses to explain the food restrictions God gave him. Plan a menu suitable for those celebrating Shavuot today. Christians believe that the Spirit empowers them to act. Use local Parish Bulletins, the Westminster Record and your school website to find examples of people acting with the power of the Spirit. What do Catholics do on Pentecost Sunday? Survey families and find out if Pentecost Sunday is celebrated with special food or ritual. Respond to the Word: Action Make wind chimes or kites and celebrate the action of the Spirit as wind an energy which can not be seen but which we can feel and see. Promote your work around the school and challenge others within your community to act with the wisdom and energy of the Spirit of God.

Sung: Prayer Use the prayers of dismissal for Pentecost Sunday as the basis for prayer to conclude your day. See resources below. Have pupils who speak a language other than English bring and lead prayers in class. Note how Christianity has been blown around the world. Place a small dish of perfumed oil on your prayer table. As part of a class prayer, invite pupils to anoint their hands with the sign of the cross, reminiscent of baptism when Christians are gifted with the Holy Spirit.
6 Resources: Psalm for Pentecost Sunday Response: Send forth your Spirit, O Lord, and renew the face of the earth. Bless the Lord, my soul! Lord God, how great you are! How many are your works, O Lord! The earth is full of your riches. You take back your spirit, they die, returning to the dust from which they came. You send forth your spirit, they are created; and you renew the face of the earth. May the glory of the Lord last for ever! May the Lord rejoice in his works! May my thoughts be pleasing to him. I find my joy in the Lord. Prayers for the end of the day. (based on the Blessing and Dismissal, Pentecost Sunday, Year A) The actual words of the dismissal are in red. On Pentecost day, God enlightened the minds of the disciples by the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. May God bless you and give you the gifts of the Spirit for ever. All: Amen. May that fire which hovered over the disciples as tongues of flame make your hearts glow with pure light. All: Amen. The Spirit inspired the disciples to speak in different tongues to proclaim God s love. May God strengthen your faith and your actions in bringing the good news of Christ to all. All: Amen.
