7 Technical aspects Impact on new and existing ships "New ship" means a ship:.1 for which the building contract is placed on or after 1 January 2013; or.2 in the absence of a building contract, the keel of which is laid or which is at a similar stage of construction on or after 1 July 2013; or.3 the delivery of which is on or after 1 July For new ships, EEDI (Bulk Carrier, Gas tanker, Tanker, Container ship, General Cargo ships, Refrigerated cargo carrier, Combination carrier, passenger ships, ro-ro vehicle carriers, ro-ro cargo ships, ro-ro passenger ships) > 400 GT For existing ships, SEEMP on board on or after 1 January 2013 at the first intermediate or renewal survey, whichever is the first (> 400 GT)

8 Technical aspects Technical measures ENERGY EFFICIENCY DESIGN INDEX FOR NEW SHIPS (EEDI) - Will enable ship designers and builders to design and construct intrinsically efficient ships - Will encourage ship owners to invest in energy-efficiency technologies Operational measures SHIP ENERGY EFFICIENCY MANAGEMENT PLAN (SEEMP) Onboard management instrument (slower steaming; faster turnaround; special hull paints; heat recovery systems; etc) ENERGY EFFICIENCY OPERATIONAL INDICATOR enables ship-owners to measure the effectiveness of the adopted efficiency practices

12 Technical aspects Many aspects still need to be discussed and finalized by future sessions of the MEPC. The agreed MEPC work plan includes the following: EEDI formula for all ship types and all types of propulsion guidelines for calculation of the EEDI (new ships) and for development of SEEMP (all ships); Guidelines on EEDI survey and certification 12

14 Technical aspects Task 1- Refinement of the EEDI formula for RoRo passenger ships [..] broken down into 3 activities as follows: 1. based on the current MEPC baselines approach for the considered ship types, collect further data and, as far as reasonable and practicable, develop a proposed refined/adjusted formulation of such baseline approach; 2. identify possible correction factors to be included in the EEDI formula for the considered ship types. [ ] Validate the correction factors/new approach versus available and collected data; 3. [ ] relevant proposal(s) on further steps which the IMO may wish to consider. Task 2 collect information on similar and/or complementary studies underway [ ]. 14
