1 SUMMER YOUTH EMPLOYMENT PROGRAM Made Possible By: Connecticut General Assembly With Additional Funds From CT Department of Children and Families Select Municipalities Community and Philanthropic Partners Workforce Investment Act (U.S. Dept. of Labor) SUMMARY 2015
2 Summer Youth Employment Program = Opportunities Summary Close to 5,000 youth served In 2015, Connecticut s five workforce development boards provided 4,921 young people with practical work experience through the Summer Youth Employment Program. Youth ages 14 to 20-years-old worked part-time at a variety of large and small companies, non-profit organizations and municipalities during July and August for a minimum of four weeks. Participants gained valuable personal and professional skills in fields including health care, finance and insurance, retail and hospitality, arts and culture, and public service. A special appropriation approved by members of the Connecticut General Assembly coupled with funds from the CT Department of Children and Families made for a total state investment of nearly $5.6 million, fulfilling 3,632 youth placements. Leveraged public and private funds of over $2.1 million through the workforce development boards made possible another 1,289. A total investment of just over $7.7 million resulted in 4,921 youth with summer jobs. Each workforce development board works within its communities to recruit youth participants and business partners, and to ensure a worthwhile experience.
3 Summer Youth Employment Program Funding Over $7.7 million invested The Connecticut General Assembly awarded over $4.9 million in state funding among the five workforce development boards. The CT Department of Children and Families allocated an additional $610,100. Over $2.1 million of municipal, federal and philanthropic monies merged to support the Summer Youth Employment Program. Workforce boards continuously seek resources from private companies, corporate and community foundations, and local government to expand the program and serve more youth. 9 Youth are Helping to Build Connecticut s Businesses. Here is just a sample from 2015: Testimonials Here is just a sample from 2015: Dejanay Pitkat Center Vernon, CT Working close with the elderly has taught me so much about life s challenges The Pitkat Center steered me toward my profession to be a social worker working with children For me, the Pitkat Center was an inspiration, a shining light at the end of a black tunnel. I don t want to see kids give up. I want to see them reach for the stars and fulfill their potential. As a social worker, I will do everything in my power to make this happen. In the photo: Dejanee is using these colorful balls as an exercise tool during fitness time for the elderly residents at the Pitkat Congregate Center in Vernon The teen who was with us this summer through the Summer Youth Employment Program was a great addition to our summer staff. She reliably assisted with a wide variety of tasks, from filing to painting, that were necessary to the Playhouse and the annual Children's Circus. We have participated in this program in previous years and look forward to participating again.
