1 JOB DESCRIPTION Job Title: Responsible to: Hours per week: Tutor in A-Level Chemistry and BTEC Applied Science Head of Learning and Standards for A Levels and Creative Arts 36 hours per week Main Purpose of the Role To develop, plan and manage the delivery of A Level Chemistry and BTEC Applied Science as required within the Curriculum Area/Faculty. Take responsibility for A Level Chemistry and BTEC Applied Science programmes leading assessment, internal verification and course monitoring. To be responsible for raising standards and quality in A Level Chemistry and BTEC Applied Science by the delivery of informative, high quality and inspirational teaching and learning tailored to individual student s needs. Ensure the Programmes of Study are delivered in accordance with the Corporate Aims and Strategic Objectives of the College. Act as Lead IV Ensure that GCSE English & Maths / Functional Skills are integral to the Programme/s of Study. Act as Personal Tutor Principal Accountabilities 1. To develop, deliver, assess and verify a programme of study for BTEC Applied Science and Chemistry that is appropriate in meeting the needs of stakeholders. 2. To programme manage A Level Chemistry and BTEC Applied Science. 3. To be responsible for programme(s) of study including the development of Schemes of Work, Lesson Plans to be used in the delivery of the programme. 4. To establish precise learning objectives, content and clear learning outcomes for all teaching and learning undertaken on the programmes. 5. To analyse data and target setting on programmes to raise standards of retention and achievement

2 6. To collaborate with Associate tutors / training assessors in the planning and preparation of Schemes of Work for the delivery of units across the BTEC Applied Science and Chemistry provision 7. To fulfil Validating and Awarding Body requirements, including Internal Verification and the establishment of effective recording and tracking mechanisms for student progress and achievement. 8. To engage in the analysis of data and target setting to raise standards of retention and achievement. 9. To attend and hold team meetings both within the Faculty and across college, carrying out administration for such meetings where necessary. 10. To thoroughly prepare and plan well-structured lessons and associated assignments in accordance with Schemes of Work establishing precise learning objectives, content and clear learning outcomes for all teaching undertaken on the programme. 11. To establish an effective, safe and stimulating learning environment, allowing all students to perform to the best of their abilities and to develop independent learning and transferable skills. Support learners to access appropriate learning programmes using a range of diagnostic tools and assessment methods 12. To develop appropriate learning styles and delivery methods which meet the needs of learners 13. To assess learners work in line with Awarding Body Standards and provide timely feedback to strengthen learning. 14. To display good subject knowledge and understanding of the specification/curriculum and to keep up to date with developments and knowledge in the subject area. 15. To ensure that Functional Skills are integral to the provision and promote high standards of literacy and numeracy throughout the programmes of study. 16. To develop and deliver innovative and high quality resources to enable wider participation via VLE/distance learning and e-learning technologies. 17. To reflect on the effectiveness of lessons and approaches to teaching, and respond to advice and feedback from colleagues. 18. To act as a role model for learners in the development of positive attitude to learning, good work habits and behaviour setting high standards for students learning, motivation and attendance. 19. To organise and supervise student educational and industrial visits

3 20. To act as a personal tutor and support students in managing their own learning. 21. Comply with and support the College s Quality Improvement and Assurance processes and Management Information Systems as they evolve 22. Complete and keep a record of 30hrs Continuous Professional Development (pro rata to a minimum of 6 hrs) annually 23. To advise on new curriculum initiatives. General Accountabilities 1. Lead, promote and support the development of the College s Equality and Diversity policies, procedures and practices as they relate to students and staff. 2. Develop effective contact, liaison and working relationships with colleagues in the College and other bodies as appropriate. 3. Support the development of the learning organisation and facilitate cultural change. 4. To engage in professional development and networking to ensure that professional and strategic contributions are up-to-date. 5. Complying with the College Health and Safety Policy and all relevant health and safety requirements. 6. Participating actively in the performance management scheme, agreeing objectives, attending reviews and undertaking professional development as required. 7. All employees are expected to be fully committed to policies and processes on equality, diversity and safeguarding. 8. Such other duties as may be reasonably expected of the post holder. 9. This list is not exhaustive and is only an indication of responsibilities. Training Identified for the Post 1. Undertake professional updating for a minimum of three days work experience per year in a relevant placement to keep abreast of industrial developments and requirements. 2. Undertake 60 hours per year professional development activity (pro rata for part time staff, with a minimum of 6 hours). Equality and Diversity training. 3. Keeping updated with developments in the appropriate curriculum area.

4 7. Keeping updated with sector developments as they affect the specific curriculum area. 8. Appropriate teaching qualification at Level 4 or above, to be gained within three years of employment commencing. Please note The person appointed to this post will, from time to time, have contact with students, many of whom are under eighteen year of age, and some under sixteen years, a number of whom may have moderate to severe learning difficulties and/or disabilities. As such, the postholder will be required to have an Enhanced DBS check along with other mandatory checks. As the College is a multi-campus site, flexibility and willingness to work across sites will be required. This job description reflects the requirements of the post at May 2016 but may be amended from time to time following consultation with the post holder. 5 PERSONAL SPECIFICATION: Tutor of A-Level Chemistry / BTEC Applied Science Experience Qualifications Knowledge Skills Essential Experience of teaching and assessing A Level Chemistry Lead IV/ Verifier qualification or willingness to achieve within the probationary period. A Degree in Chemistry or relevant subject area Qualified teacher status or willingness to embark on a training course leading to a teaching qualification Up to date knowledge of the A Level Chemistry specifications Knowledge of the principles of teaching, learning and assessment Understanding of Health and Safety implications for teaching Ability to design and manage a curriculum that prepares students effectively for HE and employment Innovative teacher with the ability to enthuse, motivate and inspire Excellent organisational skills Effective communication with students at all levels Ability to plan, manage, monitor and take proactive action Flexible approach to education and the ability to adapt quickly to new initiatives Understanding of how data can be used to improve quality of the provision High level ICT skills Innovative use of E Learning in the classroom and beyond Ability to respect confidentiality and professionally on particular issues Desirable Experience in the FE sector Experience teaching BTEC Applied Science Level 3 Personal tutor or similar role First Aid Qualification Up to date knowledge of BTEC Applied Science specifications

Ability to work as part of a team and support colleagues. Ability to cope with a demanding workload. Prepared to take and implement decisions and accept responsibility for own actions. Self-motivated. Other Ability and willingness to travel between sites and elsewhere on a regular basis.
