1 A Letter worn on the uniform of the assistant team captain. THE BASICS ASSIST An assist is credited to a player who helps set up a goal. Assists are awarded to the last two men to handle the puck immediately preceding the goal. There is a maximum of two assists per goal. BOARDS The wall around a hockey rink (which was at one time really made of wood but which is now usually of fiberglass) measuring about 42 inches high and topped off by synthetic glass to protect the spectators while giving them a good view of the action. CENTER ICE The area between the two blue lines; otherwise known as the Neutral Zone. CLEARING THE PUCK When the puck is passed, knocked, or shot away from the front of one s own goal net or other area. DEFENSIVE ZONE The area between the goal line and the blue line. DEKE A deke is a fake by a player in possession of the puck in order to get around an opponent or to make a goalie move out of position. To deke, you move the puck or a part of your body to one side and then in the opposite direction. ( Deke is taken from decoy. ) DELAY OF GAME This is called when a player purposely delays the game. Delay of game can occurs when a player intentionally knocks a goalpost out of its stand (usually in an attempt to prevent a goal from being scored). In the NHL, delay of game is commonly called when a goalie or defenseman shoots the puck into the stands without the puck deflecting off a skater or the glass, but no such rule exists in the NCAA. DELAYED OFF-SIDE In this situation, an attacking player has preceded the puck into the offensive zone (normally a case for offside), but the defending team has gained possession of the puck and can bring it out of their defensive zone without any delay or contact with an opposing player.

2 DELAYED PENALTY Whistle is delayed until the penalized team regains possession of the puck. DIVING When a player exaggerates being hooked or tripped in an attempt to draw a penalty. EMPTY-NET GOAL A goal scored against an opponent that has pulled the goalie for an extra attacker in an attempt to tie the game. This typically happens late in the 3rd period with under 2 minutes to play in the game. FACE-OFF The action of an official dropping the puck between the sticks of two opposing players to start play. FORECHECK Forwards forecheck by hurrying into the opponent s defensive zone to either keep the puck there by pressuring the opposition or take it away. FREEZING THE PUCK A player freezes the puck by holding it against the boards with the stick or skates. A goalie freezes the puck (when the opposition is threatening to score) by either holding the puck in the glove or trapping it on the ice. Note: A delay-of-game penalty can be called if the goalie freezes the puck when the opposition is not threatening. FULL STRENGTH When a team has five skaters on the ice plus their goaltender. HAT TRICK A player who scores three goals in one game achieves a hat trick. ICING An infraction called when a player shoots the puck from his side of the center-ice line across the opponent s goal line. Play is stopped when the officials deem an opponent (other than the goalie) would touch the puck before the offending team. The face-off is held in the offending team s end of the ice. A team that is shorthanded can ice the puck without being penalized. INTERMISSION A 15-minute break between each of the three periods. LINESMAN Two linesmen are used to call offside, icing, and handle all faceoffs not occurring at center ice. Although they don t call penalties, they can recommend to the referee that a penalty be called. OFFICIALS In each game there are two referees and two linesmen.

3 OFFSIDE A team is offside when a player crosses the attacking blue line before the puck does. A faceoff then takes place just outside that blue line (in the offending player s defensive zone). The determining factor in most offside situations is the position of the skates: Both skates must be completely over the blue line ahead of the puck for the play to be offside. ONE-TIMER Shooting the puck immediately upon receiving it without stopping it first. A one-timer is an effective way to beat the goalie before he can slide from one side of the crease to the other. MAJOR PENALTY (Five minutes) Called for fighting or when minor penalties are committed with deliberate attempt to injure. During a 5-minute power play, the team with the man advantage can score an unlimited amount of goals before the penalty expires. MINOR PENALTY (Two minutes) Called for tripping, hooking, cross-checking, slashing, charging, roughing, holding, elbowing, delay of game, diving or boarding. If the team on the power play scores, the penalized player returns to the ice. MISCONDUCT (10 minutes) Called for various forms of unsportsmanlike behavior or when a player incurs a second major penalty in a game. This is a penalty against an individual and not a team, so a substitute is permitted. PENALTY BOX Off-ice area at the neutral zone where penalized players serve their time. PENALTY KILLING When a team is shorthanded and attempts to prevent the opposition from scoring, this activity is known as penalty killing. PENALTY SHOT A free shot, unopposed except for the goalie, given to a player who is illegally impeded from behind when he has possession of the puck with no opponent between him and the goal except the goalie. The team which commits the offense is not penalized beyond the penalty shot, whether it succeeds or not. POWER PLAY When a team has a one- or two-man advantage over the opposition due to penalties. RINK The frozen surface inside the boards on which game of hockey is played. The NCAA surface is 200 feet long by 85 feet wide. SAVE When a goalie stops a shot from going in to the net that is called a save.

4 SCREEN Occurs when one or more players are between the shooter and the goalie, blocking the goalie s view of the play. SHOOTOUT Used to decide the outcome of regular season games that remain tied after the overtime session. SHOT ON GOAL An attempt by the attacking team to score a goal by shooting the puck toward the net. This results in either a save or a goal. SHORTHANDED When the opposing team has a one or two-man advantage due to penalties your team is shorthanded. SLAP SHOT A slap shot occurs when the player swings the stick back and then quickly forward, slapping the puck ahead with a forehand shot. SNAP SHOT A snap shot is a like an abbreviated slap shot. The purpose of the snap shot is to combine the main advantages of the wrist shot (shot accuracy and quick delivery) and the slap shot (puck speed). STICK-HANDLING A term for carrying the puck along the ice with the stick. TURNOVER Just as in basketball or in football, you can make a turnover in hockey by losing control of the puck to the opposing team. ZAMBONI The vehicle used to prepare the rink s ice surface before the game and after each period. The Zamboni scrapes a thin layer off the ice, and puts down a fresh layer of heated water that freezes to form a new layer of ice.

5 PENALTIES MINOR PENALTY The most common type of penalty, in which the offender sits two minutes in the penalty box. In most cases, the offending team will play the two minutes short-handed and the penalty ends if a goal is scored on the offending team. If the goalkeeper is given a minor, a bench minor will occur. MAJOR PENALTY A more severe penalty, in which the offender sits five minutes in the penalty box. The offending team will play short-handed and the penalty will not end with a goal scored. DISQUALIFICATION Accompanied by a major penalty to the offending player s team, a disqualification results in an ejection from the game and a suspension equal to the amount of disqualification peanlties by the player (ex. a first-time offender will receive a one-game suspension). BENCH MINOR A penalty to a team and not one specific player, in which the offending team can choose which player will serve the minor penalty. MISCONDUCT PENALTIES When a misconduct is called, a player must serve 10 minutes in the penalty box. However, the offending player s team is permitted to replace him on the ice and will not go short-handed. Game misconducts may also be called, which do not include an automatic suspension. PENALTY SHOT Penalty shots are awarded when the referee determines a player is penalized from behind while he would have had a breakaway had the penalty not occurred. OTHER COMMON PENALTIES BOARDING Checking an opponent from behind into the boards. Can be a minor or major penalty with disqualification. CHARGING An aggressive check that begins a longer distance (typically three steps) away from an opponent. Can be a minor or major penalty with disqualification. CROSS-CHECKING Checking an opponent and extending the arms while both hands are still on the stick. Can be a minor or major penalty with disqualification.

6 ELBOWING Using the elbow to hit an opponent. Typically a minor, but can be a major and even disqualification. FIGHTING A major altercation in which punches are often thrown. Fighting is rare, and minor altercations are typically called roughing penalties. In the NCAA, fighting carries with it a mandatory major and disqualification. HIGH-STICKING Hitting the opponent with the stick above the shoulders. Can be a minor or major penalty with disqualification. HOLDING Grabbing any part of the opponent or the opponent s equipment. Minor penalty. HOOKING Using the blade of the stick to hook and slow down the oppponent. Almost always a minor, but can be a major penalty. INTERFERENCE Impeding the progress of an opponent who does not have the puck. Also includes checking or impeding the goalie. Almost always a minor, but can be a major penalty. ROUGHING Pushing or shoving after the whistle, including hands to the face. Always a minor penalty, as more serious roughing penalties are called fighting penalties. SLASHING Swing the stick at an opponent. Can be a minor or major penalty with disqualification. SPEARING Ramming the stick into an opponent like a spear. Mandatory major penalty and disqualification. TOO MANY MEN When more than the allowed players are on the ice and involved in the play. Bench minor penalty. TRIPPING Using the stick or body to trip an opponent. Minor penalty. UNSPORTSMANLIKE CONDUCT Arguing with a referee, using oscene language or otherwise acting in a way deemed disrespectctful to the game. Minor penalty.

7 GENERAL TERMINOLOGY ASSIST An assist is awarded to the player or players (maximum of two) who touched the puck prior to the goal, provided no defender plays or possesses the puck in between. COACHES RECORD A coach receives a W for a win in regulation, overtime or shootout; an L for a loss in regulation; or an OT for a loss in overtime or shootout. GAME PLAYED A player receives credit for playing in a game if: i) he steps on the ice during time played or; ii) serves any penalty. GAME-WINNING GOAL After the final score has been determined, the goal which leaves the winning Club one goal ahead of its opponent is the game-winning goal (example: if Team A beats Team B 8-3, the player scoring the fourth goal for Team A receives credit for the game-winning goal). GOAL A goal is awarded to the last player on the scoring Club to touch the puck prior to the puck entering the net. GOALS-AGAINST AVERAGE Multiply goals allowed (GA) by 60 and divide by minutes played (MINS). GOALTENDER RECORD A goaltender receives a W for a win in regulation, overtime or shootout; an L for a loss in regulation; or an OT for a loss in overtime or shootout. PENALTY-KILLING PCT. Subtract total number of power-play goals allowed from total number of shorthanded situations to get total number of power-plays killed. Divide the total number of power-plays killed by the total number of shorthanded situations. PLUS-MINUS A player receives a plus if he is on the ice when his Club scores an even-strength or shorthand goal. He receives a minus if he is on the ice for an even-strength or shorthand goal scored by the opposing Club. The difference in these numbers is considered the player s plus-minus statistic.

8 POWER-PLAY GOAL A goal scored by a Club while it has a manpower advantage due to an opponent s penalty. Following are some examples of what is and is not considered a power-play goal: - if a Club has an advantage on a minor penalty starting at 2:02 of the period and it scores at 4:02, the goal is not a power-play goal. - if a Club scores on a delayed penalty, the goal is not a power-play goal. - if a Club has an advantage due to a five-minute major or match penalty, that Club is always credited with having one more advantage than the number of power-play goals it scores during that advantage, because the penalty does not expire. A new advantage begins after each power-play goal. For example, if Team A scores three goals during a major penalty, it is credited with four advantages. - if a Club is on a power-play for any length of time, it is considered to have had an advantage. - if a minor penalty is incurred by a Club on a power-play due to a major penalty, a new advantage is given to that Club when its minor penalty expires, provided the opponent s major penalty is still in effect. POWER-PLAY PERCENTAGE Total number of power-play goals divided by total number of power-play opportunities. SAVE PERCENTAGE Subtract goals allowed (GA) from shots against (SA) to determine saves. Then divide saves by shots-against. SHOOTING PERCENTAGE Divide the number of goals scored by the number of shots taken. SHORTHAND GOAL A goal scored by a Club while it is at a manpower disadvantage. The same cases apply for shorthand as for power-play goals, but in the opposite manner. SHOT ON GOAL If a player shoots the puck with the intention of scoring and if that shot would have gone in the net had the goaltender not stopped it, the shot is recorded as a shot on goal. SHUTOUT If two goaltenders combine for a shutout, neither receives credit for the shutout. Instead it is recorded as a Club shutout. TENTHS OF A SECOND If a penalty or goal occurs in the last minute, the time is rounded off to the previous second (ex: if a penalty is called with 12.4 seconds left in a period, the time is indicated as 19:47 and not 19:48.)
