3 First Steps: Questions? What are your research aims? What research do you want to be able to do? Do you have a project or projects in mind? What is your career position? Are you eligible? Do you have a permanent post? Is your Dept willing to support you if not? How can you achieve your career and research aims in your current circumstances? Do you need funding? If so, what fits your research and intended career aspirations?

4 British Academy: Postdoctoral Fellowship Purpose: to enable outstanding early career researchers to complete significant piece of publishable research and strengthen prospects of permanent academic career Deadline and Timetable: 1 st stage: October. Shortlisting: early February. 2 nd Stage: Feb/March. Awards announced May Tenable for 3 yrs, covers salary costs and limited research expenses (up to 2000 Eligibility: Competition open to all Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences; British citizens, anyone with UK doctorate (awarded by 1 April) or EEA (European Economic Area) national resident in the UK and employed in temporary academic post, who is within 3 yrs of doctorate and not held permanent academic position Further information:

5 Leverhulme Trust: Early Career Fellowship Purpose: provide career development opportunities for early career academics. Anticipated will lead to a more permanent academic position. Any academic discipline. Deadline and Timetable: External deadline is March. Awards announced end of May. If applying through Oxford there will be an internal deadline in December/January. Contact your Faculty ASAP for details... Provide 50% of salary costs (max. 23,000/yr) remainder paid by host institution. Research expenses up to 6000/yr. Eligibility: applicants may not hold or have held full-time established academic position in UK university; normally have UK degree (exception: if hold temporary UK academic position) Received DPhil within last 5 yrs Trust are keen on people moving institutions Further information:

6 Wellcome Trust: Postdoctoral Fellowships Purpose: to support researchers in Society &Ethics or Medical History and Humanities who are not yet in established academic post to carry out specific research project or obtain training in a new area of their field. Preference to applicants with prospects of permanent academic career Deadlines and Timetable: Prelim: 6 wks min. pre-deadline. Full: 1 st Aug, 1 st Feb. Interviews for shortlisted candidates Duration and Value: Provide salary costs, employers contributions and associated research expenses for up to 3 years. Eligibility: Member of European Economic Area (EEA); must have doctorate and not established permanent academic post; no time restrictions; must be sponsored by a senior academic in host institution. 7 AHRC Early Career Fellowships The applicant must have been employed by the University for at least a year before the date of submission of the proposal. The Investigator must have a contract of employment that extends beyond the duration of the proposed Fellowship that allows the Fellow to complete the work outlined in the proposal and is consistent with the University s commitments to support the Fellow s longer term career development. The University will need to demonstrate that it has been selective in the applications submitted and provide evidence of commitment to the career and leadership development of the Fellow and that it will provide specific support during the Fellowship. At the point of application, applicants must be: within eight years of the award of their PhD or equivalent professional training; OR within six years of their first academic appointment. The researcher must also have at least two years post-doctoral experience in an academic environment (excluding career breaks), and a track record of research publications or other research outputs. Applicants must have not already been a Principal Investigator on an AHRC funded project (excluding RGPLA/Small Grants, Research Leave, Early Career Fellowships, Fellowships in Creative and Performing Arts, and the Research Networking scheme). 8 AHRC Early Career Fellowships Fellowships of between 6 and 24 months Maximum length of full-time component is 12 months, with a minimum average commitment of 50% FTE during the Fellowship. Part-time components realistically should range from 20%-80% FTE. Projects: can be at any point in development, but Fellowships must lead to substantive research outputs. Applications for projects on any arts and humanities subject welcomed Leadership development, collaborative activities and institutional selectivity required.

9 AHRC Research Project Grants ECR Route The Research Grants Schemes are intended to support well-defined research projects enabling individual researchers to collaborate with, and bring benefits to, other individuals and organisations through the conduct of research. All applications under the grants scheme will be required to include a principal investigator and at least one co-investigator jointly involved in the development of the research proposal, its leadership and management and leading to significant jointly authored research outputs. The early career route provides grants for projects with a full economic cost (fec) between ( 50,000 from 1 April 2012) and 250,000 for a varying duration up to a limit of 60 months.
