Windows XP Wireless Configuration For NCC Student Owned Laptops A wireless network for Students to use with their personal laptops, is available throughout campus with the SSID NCC-STUDENT. This network is configured with WPA Enterprise authentication and AES encryption, which utilizes your NETID and password for logon. The IT Department is not responsible for updating, configuring, repairing, or otherwise troubleshooting personal laptops. This includes, but is not limited to, damage caused by malicious software or people, both in person and over the network or Internet. Minimum requirements for Laptops: All Student owned Laptops must have a wireless network card capable of A (Wireless A), G (Wireless G), or N (Wireless N) speeds. Laptops with an B (Wireless B) network card will not be capable of seeing the wireless network, and will not be able to connect. The latest Microsoft Windows Updates are required to support authentication to this network. You will not be able to connect to the SSID NCC-STUDENT without having these updates. You must download the updates from another location (such as your home) prior to bringing your laptop to campus. Windows XP configuration guide: Step 1: Check that your Wireless Network Card is enabled. On some laptops there is a switch or button which enables or disables the Wireless Network card and/or wireless network card antenna. Be sure that the card is functioning. Also check that the card is not disabled in the Control Panel. Click on the Start button, then Control Panel, then Network Connections. Right Click on the Wireless network card, and choose Enable. Close the Network Connections folder when you are satisfied that your network card is enabled. See the screenshot below for an example.
Step 2: After the card is enabled, right click on the wireless network card adapter in the Network Connections Window, and choose Properties. A Wireless Network Connection Properties Window opens. Choose the Wireless Networks tab, and check the box to Use Windows to Configure My Wireless Network Settings. Then click the OK, button. See the Screenshot below for an example.
Step 3: In the Task Bar System Tray, Right click on the Wireless Network Card icon. Then choose View Available Wireless Networks. See the screenshot below for an example. Step 4: In the Wireless Network Connection window (which opened when the View Available Wireless Networks was clicked above) check that your network card can see the wireless networks NCC-Employee and NCC-STUDENT. If you do not see them at first, and you are sure that your wireless network card is enabled and compatible with wireless A, G, or N networks, then click the Refresh Network List link on the left side of the window, just below the word Network Tasks. See the screenshot below for an example.
Step 5: In the Wireless Network Connection windows, click on Change Advanced Settings, under the words Related Tasks on the left side of the window pane. A Wireless Network Connection Properties window will open. Step 6: In the Wireless Network Connection Properties window, choose the Wireless Networks tab near the top. The following Screenshot will display: Step 7: On the List under the Preferred Network section, Look for a previously configured SSID with the name NCC-STUDENT. If it exists, highlight it and click Properties, and reconfigure it with the settings below. If it does not exist, click the ADD button and enter the settings below. In the Network Name field type NCC-STUDENT (use the correct case). In the Network Authentication field, choose WPA. In the Data Encryption field, choose AES. The following screenshot shows an example of the configuration settings.
Step 8: Click on the Authentication Tab along the top of the screen. In the EAP Type field, choose Protected EAP (PEAP). Uncheck Authenticate as computer when computer information is available Uncheck Authenticate as guest when user or computer information is unavailable The following screenshot shows an example:
Step 9: In the Wireless properties window, Authentication tab, once the EAP Type is set to Protected EAP (PEAP). Click the Properties button. A Protected EAP Properties window will display. Set the Select Authentication Method to Secure Password (EAP-MSCHAPv2) Uncheck the Validate server certificate option. Check the Enable Fast Reconnect option. Uncheck the Enable Quarantine Checks option. Uncheck the Disconnect if server does not present crypto binding TLV See the screen shot below for an example.
Step 10: In the Protected EAP Properties window, once the Secured Password (EAP-MSCHAPv2) authentication method has been selected, click the Configure button. An EAP MSCHAPv2 Properties window will display. Uncheck Automatically use my Windows logon name and password (and domain if any). See the screen shot below for an example.
Step 11: Click OK to exit the EAP MSCHAPv2 Properties window. Click OK to exit the Protected EAP Properties window. Click OK to exit the Wireless Network properties window. Click OK to exit the Wireless Network Connection Properties window. Step 12: In the Task Bar System Tray, a yellow balloon message will display that reads Wireless Network Connection. Click here to select a certificate or other credentials for connection to the network NCC-STUDENT. Click on the yellow balloon message. A screenshot example of the message is below. Step 13: Once the Balloon message has been clicked, an Enter Credentials window appears. Type your NETID (example @ncc.commnet.edu) into the User Name field. Type your password into the Password field. Leave the Logon Domain field blank. Click OK. In the Task Bar System Tray, a yellow balloon message will display that reads Wireless Network Connection is now connected. Step 14: Open Internet explorer 7. Instead of you homepage appearing, a message stating that there is a problem with this websites security certificate appears, as seen in the screen shot below.
Step 15: Click the link to Continue to this website (not recommended). You will then be forwarded to the NCC Employee Wireless Policy Splash page, seen in the screen shot below. Use of this wireless network indicates acceptance to this policy as well as those located at After this page displays, you can navigate to any other website.
