The NEW GCSE Specification First teaching: September 2009 First certificate: Summer 2011 GCSE Art & Design I Miscellaneous examples

The new specification will consist of TWO parts: Assessment 1: CANDIDATE PORTFOLIO (60%) Assessment 2: EXTERNALLY SET TASK (40%) GCSE Art & Design I Miscellaneous examples

The PORTFOLIO The PORTFOLIO unit (formerly known as coursework) will be internally set by the centre and developed from personal and/or given starting points. The PORTFOLIO must motivate the personal interest of each candidate and at the same time appropriately relate to worthwhile educational experiences. If the given starting point is the same we would expect different personal responses. This would avoid a house style approach and score more highly within the assessment objectives. GCSE Art & Design I Miscellaneous examples

The PORTFOLIO The final PORTFOLIO must be selected and presented by the candidate from work undertaken within the course. The PORTFOLIO must provide evidence of how the candidate has met each of the four assessment objectives.

The specification is designed to encompass four principal areas. These areas are incorporated into the four assessment objective headings: > contextual understanding > creative making > reflective recording > personal presentation Candidate Portfolio & Externally Set Task: GCSE Art & Design I Miscellaneous examples

A02 Creative Making Key Characteristics of NEW Specification PORTFOLIO: Assessment Objectives A01 Contextual Understanding Coursework development leading to PORTFOLIO A03 Reflective Recording A04 Personal Presentation

PORTFOLIO & EXTERNALLY SET TASK: Assessment Objectives AO1 Contextual Understanding AO2 Creative Making Develop their ideas through investigations informed by contextual and other sources demonstrating analytical and cultural understanding Refine their ideas through experimenting and selecting appropriate resources, media, materials, techniques and processes AO3 Reflective Recording AO4 Personal Presentation Record ideas, observations and insights relevant to their intentions in visual and / or other forms. 8 Assessment Objective 1 AO1 Contextual Understanding Develop their ideas through investigations informed by contextual and other sources demonstrating analytical and cultural understanding Breakdown of AO1 (Grade A): images, artefacts and products show effective analysis and evaluation; investigations are characterised by rigour and thoroughness; ideas have been creatively developed and explored; a very clear understanding of context evidenced by a variety of responses, interpretations and developments.

Assessment Objective 2 AO2 Creative Making Refine their ideas through experimenting and selecting appropriate resources, media, materials, techniques and processes Breakdown of AO2 (Grade A): ideas have been refined through creative and rigorous experimentation; confident and appropriate manipulation and exploitation of wide ranging resources, media, material, techniques and processes; knowledge, skills and understanding have been harnessed in resourceful, discriminating and purposeful ways; work is characterised by ongoing and meaningful evaluation, planning and modification.

Assessment Objective 3 AO3 Reflective Recording Record ideas, observations and insights relevant to their intentions in visual and / or other forms. Breakdown of AO3 (Grade A): recording of ideas and interpretation of observations and experiences have been sensitively and skilfully applied; There is a very strong link between the presentation of ideas and results of enquiry with initial intentions.

Assessment Objective 4 AO4 Personal Presentation Present a personal, informed and meaningful response demonstrating analytical and critical understanding, realising intentions and where appropriate, making connections between visual, oral or other elements Breakdown of AO4 (Grade A): work is characterised by imaginative and personal responses (evaluated, selected and presented by the candidate); intentions are realised in a coherent and mature manner; the candidate can make astute and informed connections between personal lines of enquiry and the work of others.

The PORTFOLIO should: Key Characteristics of NEW Specification The PORTFOLIO be taught, administered and assessed as ONE overall unit of work; show different artistic-creative processes to ensure a BROAD curriculum and sufficient opportunities for learners to specialise, where appropriate, in an endorsed option; encourage adventurous and open programmes of study. GCSE Art & Design I Miscellaneous examples

The PORTFOLIO Coursework within the PORTFOLIO unit is anything and everything done by the candidate between the beginning of the course and the Externally Set Task (exam). Assignments, tasks, projects and themes can be of any duration, from brief practical exercises to extended investigations or analyses. GCSE Art & Design I Miscellaneous examples

The PORTFOLIO The curriculum for the Portfolio is designed by the teacher as a coherent mix of experiences of varying difficulty and style. The tasks set by the teacher should enable candidates to demonstrate their knowledge, understanding and skills in Art & Design measured by the assessment objectives. GCSE Art & Design Miscellaneous examples

PORTFOLIO how much work? How much work should make up a candidate PORTFOLIO for Assessment 1? Emphasis should be on QUALITY rather than QUANTITY. The key question will be. how well has the candidate addressed the four key assessment objectives? GCSE Art & Design Miscellaneous examples

PORTFOLIO how much work? Candidates are expected to develop, as a part of their studies, an ability to select, edit and present work. The final Portfolio should take account of: > assessment objectives; > appropriate reference to the entered title (endorsed or unendorsed); > evidence of both processes and outcomes; > integration of critical, practical and theoretical studies; > evidence of exciting, challenging, coherent and meaningful learning experiences. GCSE Art & Design Miscellaneous examples

The PORTFOLIO Marks for coursework will be formative and marks for the presentation PORTFOLIO will be summative. P o r t f o l i o The WJEC will be responsible for moderating the summative marks. D e v e l o p m e n t Work for the final PORTFOLIO can come from any part of the course. However it is likely that the portfolio will become stronger as it progresses. I n i t i a l C o u r s e w o r k exploring experimenting expressing the visual language building blocks

CALENDAR To make the course more manageable we are encouraging teachers to check the calendar more comprehensively. The PORTFOLIO unit should operate between year one of GCSE and between September and December of the second year. GCSE Art & Design I Miscellaneous examples

CALENDAR We recommend that teachers provide candidates with a strict calendar of when to submit work, together with details of what constitutes a PORTFOLIO and in what form it should be presented. To ease the admin burden, we are advising teachers to mark all PORTFOLIOS by the time the Externally Set Task (exam) is issued during the first week in January. (Final C form marks must be submitted by May 15 th ) GCSE Art & Design I Miscellaneous examples

PORTFOLIO PUPIL RESPONSIBILTY The PORTFOLIO must be evaluated, selected and presented by the candidate Pupil evaluates Pupil selects Pupil presents

PORTFOLIO TEACHER RESPONSIBILTY Work selected, evaluated and presented by the pupils Summative marking - moderated externally

The Role of Sketchbooks / Workbooks within the Portfolio Personal development can be evidenced through a sketchbook / workbook. It can clearly show the candidate s own observations, interests, skills and experiments. The sketchbook / workbook should accompany the candidate PORTFOLIO. It should specifically link to the work presented in the portfolio. GCSE Art & Design I Miscellaneous examples

Key Characteristics of NEW Specification The Role of NEW MEDIA within the specification The specification makes clear that candidates can work with both TRADITIONAL and NEW MEDIA Candidates are allowed to work SOLELY with NEW MEDIA within any endorsement provided the aims and objectives are met. GCSE Art & Design I Miscellaneous examples

The Role of NEW MEDIA within the specification Contextual and Critical studies has a dual role in this specification: as an integral component throughout all titles as a free-standing endorsed title in itself GCSE Art & Design I Miscellaneous examples
