1 1 Jesus, the Son of David Matthew Introduction: Today we celebrate the Third Sunday of Advent today. Introduction: We are continuing our focus on The Christ of Christmas. Introduction: As we look into the birth of Christ, we will see why it is significant that Jesus Christ is called the Son of David. I. Matthew 2:1-12 In Verses 1-2, we encounter the guiding star (wise men followed from the East even in Daniel 9:2, there was understanding by books and prophecy- the Sign of the Times). The Star of David ( ), known in Hebrew as the Shield of David or Magen David. Its shape is that of a hexagram, the compound of two equilateral triangles. the Star of David was never a uniquely Jewish symbol. Revelation 22:16 I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star. Verse 3, this prophetic news can bring confusion and trouble or hope. Verses 4-6, all attention is focused on a small town. The City of David, Bethlehem (the House of Bread). Micah 5:2 But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting. What about the parents of Christ? The Lineage of David Romans 1:1-3 Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, separated unto the gospel of God, (Which he had promised afore by his prophets in the holy scriptures,) Concerning his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, which was made of the seed of David according to the flesh; Joseph - Luke 3:23, 31 And Jesus himself began to be about thirty years of age, being (as was supposed) the son of 1

2 13 14 Joseph, which was the son of Heli, Which was the son of Melea, which was the son of Menan, which was the son of Mattatha, which was the son of Nathan, which was the son of David, Mary- Matthew 1:6, 16 And Jesse begat David the king; and David the king begat Solomon of her that had been the wife of Urias; And Jacob begat Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ. This child was born to be King! The Throne of David Luke 1:32 He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: Isaiah 9:6-7 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace Isaiah 9:6-7 Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this. This King has authority! Matthew 25:31, 34 When the Son of man shall come in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then shall he sit upon the throne of his glory: This King has authority! Matthew 25:31, 34 Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world: Matthew 19:28 And Jesus said unto them, Verily I say unto you, That ye which have followed me, in the regeneration when the Son of man shall sit in the throne of his glory, ye also shall sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. The House and Tabernacle of David Isaiah 16:5 And in mercy shall the throne be established: and he shall sit upon it in truth in the tabernacle of David, judging, and seeking judgment, and hasting righteousness. In Verses 11-12, in recognition, the wise men had but one response to this Newborn King. 2

3 The Kingdom of David- (The triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem). Mark 11:7-10 And they brought the colt to Jesus, and cast their garments on him; and he sat upon him. And many spread their garments in the way: Mark 11:7-10 and others cut down branches off the trees, and strawed them in the way. And they that went before, and they that followed, cried, saying, Hosanna; Mark 11:7-10 Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord: Blessed be the kingdom of our father David, that cometh in the name of the Lord: Hosanna in the highest. You see, we also can recognize who Jesus is! The Son of David Mark 10:47 And when he (Blind Bartimaeus), heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out, and say, Jesus, thou son of David, have mercy on me. Matthew 21:15 And when the chief priests and scribes saw the wonderful things that he did, and the children crying in the temple, and saying, Hosanna to the son of David; they were sore displeased, II. Matthew 2:13-23 In the midst of Promise, we have fulfilled prophecy. God has a Great Plan! Jeremiah 29:11, MEV For I know the plans that I have for you, says the Lord, plans for peace and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. Prophecy (verses 14-15). Hosea 11:1 When Israel was a child, then I loved him, and called my son out of Egypt. Prophecy (verses 17-18). Jeremiah 31:15 Thus saith the Lord; A voice was heard in Ramah, lamentation, and bitter weeping; Rahel weeping for her children refused to be comforted for her children, because they were not. Prophecy (verses 17-18). Judges 13:5 For, lo, thou shalt conceive, and bear a son; and no razor shall come on his head: for the child shall be a Nazarite unto God from the womb: and he shall begin to deliver Israel out of 3

4 the hand of the Philistines In the midst of Promise, we can also see hardship, crisis, stress, and opposition. Herod did not win! (read section). David and Goliath- (Summarize story). 1 Samuel 17:47 And all this assembly shall know that the Lord saveth not with sword and spear: for the battle is the Lord's, and he will give you into our hands. In Closing- This is Ultimate King of David! Revelation 17:14 These shall make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb shall overcome them: for he is Lord of lords, and King of kings: and they that are with him are called, and chosen, and faithful. 37 Invitation (2 Parts): For Salvation- to have relationship and victory through Jesus Christ, the Son of David. To have a The Heart of David. This Christ is our example! 38 1 Kings 9:4 And if thou wilt walk before me, as David thy father walked, in integrity of heart, and in uprightness, to do according to all that I have commanded thee, and wilt keep my statutes and my judgments: 39 1 Kings 11:4 For it came to pass, when Solomon was old, that his wives turned away his heart after other gods: and his heart was not perfect with the Lord his God, as was the heart of David his father. 40 Let Us Pray What Child is this, who, laid to rest On Mary's lap, is sleeping? 43 4

5 Whom angels greet with anthems sweet, 44 While shepherds watch are keeping? Why lies He in such mean estate, Where ox and ass are feeding? Good Christian, fear: for sinners here The silent Word is pleading So bring Him incense, gold, and myrrh, Come, peasant, king, to own Him; The King of kings salvation brings; Let loving hearts enthrone Him. 53 5
