2 Principal s Report Dear Parents and Community, Junior School Council Student voice within schools is an important leaning opportunity for students to shape their learning environment. Students can actively participate within the school community, contribute to the decision making processes and influence others by putting forward their views, concerns and ideas. Our Junior School Council is one of the ways that student voice is encouraged at Drouin South PS. Our Junior School Council meets regularly to discuss school issues and to develop events and fundraisers to continue to make the school a better place for all students. They are guided by Adelle Phillips who also gives an enormous amount of time to help them achieve their goals. In order to recognise the efforts of our Junior School Council, Mrs Earl and Grade 2/3 decided to make a video to highlight why our Junior School Council is so important. This video was sent to the Victorian SRC who awarded our JSC with a certificate of commendation. (see right) Congratulations to our Junior School Council! Keep up the great effort! Cup Day and Curriculum Day Reminder Please note that next Tuesday 1st November is a public holiday for Melbourne Cup Day. Our next pupil free day (Curriculum Day) will be held on Friday 18th November. Teachers will be using this as a report writing day. New Polo Shirt Delay As you are aware, we are aiming to introduce our new school polo shirt from the start of next year and phase this in over a two-year period. Unfortunately our supplier has not been able to organise this as quickly as we were expecting. We are still hoping that they will be available in time for the start of the year. As soon as Beleza has these shirts in stock we will let all our current and soon to arrive families know. Michael Smith Principal 2

4 2/3A have been writing information texts about Spring. They have some interesting facts about this time of the year. Magpies are swooping all spring and it s annoying and scary. There is a website to help avoid magpies. Magpies think we re animals and they think we re going to crush their nest. Deegan Magpies are lurking up in the trees waiting to swoop. Magpies are annoying because they are protecting their babies. When Magpies swoop, it lasts for six weeks and it only happens in spring. It is scary because they go so fast and scare you. Declan. Magpies swoop for 6 weeks. Spring is the time for the baby magpies to hatch out of the eggs. Ella Magpies are dangerous because they swoop for 6 weeks. It is dangerous because they can hurt you. Magpies can make bad injuries like cuts and bad eye injuries. Daddy magpies think we will eat or try to hurt the baby magpies. We can protect ourselves by staying inside or drawing eyes on our helmets. The daddy magpies are scared of the eyes. Darcy You can get hay fever in spring. Lots of things can give you hay fever, like pollen or dust and many other things. Baili. 4

5 Magpies are very scary. Magpies are very dangerous. When you are riding your bike you don t expect magpies to swoop. Spring is swooping season. Stay away from baby magpies. Magpies have even cut a human s head. Jhy Newsletter Swooping season goes for 6 week. I do not like spring because it is swooping season. Swooping season is where magpies swoop. You get cuts and bruises and eye injuries. Magpies can tear stuff with their strong beaks. Montana I hate Hay fever. You get hay fever from pollen, dust, grass and pet fur. I treat it with tablets, nose spray and eye drops. By Pru Magpies swoop for a reason because they protect their chicks. Swooping season is when baby magpies start to hatch. You can protect yourself by staying away from danger. You can get cuts from magpies swooping you. Magpies swoop for 6 weeks until baby magpies are big. Chadd Hay fever is really common. Pet fur, pollen, grass and dust those this things can give you hay fever. All of those things get up your nose. It s really common to get. You can treat hay fever with nose spray, eye drops, tablets and pineapple. Nose spray for your nose, eye drops for your eyes and tablets for your mouth. So you can treat hay fever any time. By Natalie Hay fever is not hard to get. Cats and dogs hair, pollen, dust and grass can give you hay fever. Dust can get up the nose and give you hay fever. A way to get rid of hay fever you have to take tablets, nose spray and eye drops. Tablets are for everything, eye drops for the eyes. Larissa 5

6 It s that time of the year again! 2016 is coming to a fast end so OSHC staff now encourage all current OSHC families to re book for next year. We would also like to invite any new families to come and have a chat or contact the service to arrange enrolments for their child/children for next year. Please find enrolment forms located in the Office brochure holder or directly at OSHC. If any parents or guardians have any queries or would like more information about the service, please do not hesitate in contacting Casey OSHC Coordinator. OSHC Mobile Help! I am lost. I know I have an owner but their name is not on me and I am stuck here with all these other Jumpers and Jackets. Please help your Jumpers and Jackets get back to their owners by putting your name on them. Lost Property is overflowing! Please help us by checking for your unnamed Jumpers and Jackets. 6

Contact: Karlene markandkarlene@yahoo.com.au Yvonne at Parent To Parent Gippsland on yvonne.waite@noahsarkinc.org.au or Track and Field Championships Four of our Drouin South Primary School students travelled to Lakeside Oval at Albert Park on Monday to compete in the State Primary Track and Field Championships. Tamsyn, Ella, Michaela and Hayley were the members of our U12/13 years girls 4 x 100m relay team. It was an amazing effort to qualify for the championships and to be a part of the events that included the best athletes in the state! Our girls team finished a very respectable 14th overall. Tamsyn also competed in the 100m sprint placing 11th. We are very proud of you girls. Well done!!! 7
