Antonio Augusto Reis, with over 12 years of experience leading the environmental group of full service law firms with corporate clients in Brazil and the United States, and Rômulo S.R. Sampaio, with extensive legal, academic research and environmental consulting experience with major institutions devoted to public policy. 3 Bio., Antonio Augusto Rebello Reis ANTONIO A. R. REIS, founding partner of Reis & Sampaio LLP, has deep and varied experience in environmental litigation and consulting services. Prior to co-founding Reis & Sampaio LLP, Antonio led the environmental practice area of several, major full service Brazilian firms maintaining close connections with some of the largest U.S. law firms. Antonio has represented clients in complex environmental litigation and rulemaking matters. He also advises multinational corporations on diverse legislative, regulatory and litigation issues in Brazil. Recognized by renowned world and Brazilian rankings, Antonio has tried over 500 evidentiary cases and handled numerous appeals in federal and state courts all over the country. His recent experience includes: Handling numerous cases for remedial costs and natural resource damage claims. Recent client cases include Companhia Siderúrgica Nacional (CSN), Fibria and Neoenergia. 5 Bio., Rômulo Silveira da Rocha Sampaio RÔMULO S. R. SAMPAIO, (Sam) founding partner of Reis & Sampaio LLP, has broad and extensive experience in environmental law and strategic consulting. His expertise in environmental matters has been built over twelve years leading major litigation cases before Brazilian state and federal courts as well as the Supreme Court. Romulo also has a strong academic background and understanding of U.S. and Brazilian comparative law gained in part from spending over four years with a Masters and Doctoral Program on Environmental Law in New York. After his time in the U.S., Romulo was nominated to develop and launch an environmental and policy research center at Brazil s most prestigious think-tank institution: Getulio Vargas Foundation. His experience in building a research center has helped Romulo to build his capacity on environmental institutions and alternative dispute resolution mechanisms. Romulo has been involved in the negotiation of major environmental settlement disputes across the country on behalf of some of the largest corporations in Brazil. His recent experience includes: Drafting legal opinions on cutting-edge environmental issues in Brazil to assist major corporations such as British Petroleum, AES Eletropaulo (AES), Gazprom and Odebrecht in their decision-making process. Defending large associations of economic groups including the Confederação Nacional do Sistema Financeiro (CONSIF) on key lawsuits before the Brazilian Supreme Court. Defending a number of companies in enforcement litigation with the Brazilian Federal and States Environmental Enforcement Authorities, Federal and State Public Prosecutors Office and NGOs.
