3 What is Social Work? The social work profession is committed to the pursuit of social justice, the enhancement of the quality of life and the development of the full potential of each individual, group and community in society. Social workers work at the interface between people and their environments, utilizing theories of human behavior and social systems. Social work practice adheres to the standards set forth by the NASW Code of Ethics.
4 Mission of Social Work: NASW Code of Ethics The primary mission of the social work profession is to enhance human well-being and help meet the basic human needs of all people, with particular attention to the needs and empowerment of people who are vulnerable, oppressed, and living in poverty. A historic and defining feature of social work is the profession s focus on individual well-being in a social context and the well-being of society. Fundamental to social work is attention to the environmental forces that create, contribute to, and address problems in living.

13 Who We Are The ETSU MSW has been continuously accredited by the Council on Social Work Education since the program's inception in the fall of Nestled near the Blue Ridge and Smoky Mountains, ETSU is a regional university serving northeast Tennessee, western North Carolina, southwest Virginia and southeast Kentucky.
14 Preparing Students for Autonomous Clinical Practice The MSW Program learning goals include the following: 1. To prepare students with the knowledge, values and skills of clinical practice; 2. To prepare students to engage in competent and responsible clinical practice within public and private agencies 3. To prepare students to develop and use ethical research in the advancement and enhancement of social work practice.

33 Field Education: The Signature Pedagogy of Social Work Education Jane Maas-Brady Director, MSW Field Education All students are expected to complete a field experience Opportunities available outside of Johnson City (e.g., Asheville, Knoxville, Greeneville, Gate City, etc.) The Process: Students complete a practicum planning guide indicating their top 3 field setting choices After review of students initial planning guide, the Field Director meets with individual students to discuss options for field practicum Students visit the assigned agencies and meet with their proposed Field Instructor Placements are established after both field instructor and student agree that the match is compatible

47 George L. Carter Scholarships (2) Student must be new to ETSU Graduate Students Scholarship awards at $15,000 per year for students enrolled in 12 credit hours. This amount is prorated for students enrolled in 11 hours or less. Scholarships are competitive and renewable based on certain criteria. Renewable for a total of 4 years. Graduate students will automatically be considered for the scholarship upon admission to a graduate degree program or graduate certificate program.

49 International Student Academic Merit Scholarships The International Students Academic Merit Scholarship is open to new international students seeking a graduate or undergraduate degree. The scholarship covers 50% of the total of in and out-of-state tuition and maintenance fees only. No additional fees or costs are covered. The scholarship award can only be used for study at ETSU. The award is available for: Five semesters for recipients seeking a master's degree, or commensurate with the length of the program Scholarship can be applied to summer semesters Eligibility Requirements: Students must first submit an application for admission before they can apply for the scholarship. Students may apply for the scholarship before being admitted to ETSU; however a scholarship applicant must be admitted to ETSU as a full-time, degree-seeking student before the scholarship application can be reviewed. Have or plan to have an F-1 or J-1 student visa Have a demonstrated record of academic achievement Submit a recommendation form. Please note that personal recommendations (for example, from a relative or an athletic coach) are not acceptable. Please submit a recommendation from an academic reference (a professor or teacher). 55 Federal Student Loans Federal student loans are borrowed through programs supported by the federal government. These loans usually have low interest rates and offer attractive repayment terms, benefits, and options, and repayment generally does not begin until after the student leaves school. Students MUST be enrolled in at least 6 credit hours to be eligible for Federal Student Loans. 56 Federal Government Loan Forgiveness Programs Perkins loans and Stafford Loans can be cancelled for: Full-time service as a teacher in a designated elementary or secondary school serving students from low-income families, special education teacher (includes teaching children with disabilities in a public or other nonprofit elementary or secondary school) Qualified professional provider of early intervention services for the disabled, teacher of math, science, foreign languages, bilingual education, or other fields designated as teacher shortage areas Employee of a public or non-profit child or family service agency providing services to high-risk children and their families from low-income communities Nurse Medical technician Law enforcement or corrections officer Staff member in the educational component of a Head Start Program Service as a Vista or Peace Corps Volunteer Service in the Armed Forces (up to 50% in areas of hostilities or imminent danger)
57 The Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program The PSLF Program is intended to encourage individuals to enter and continue to work fulltime in public service jobs. Borrowers may qualify for forgiveness of the remaining balance of their Direct Loans after they have made 120 qualifying payments on those loans while employed full time by certain public service employers.
