EHR Vendor Selection 101: Considerations, Tools & Tips NYC REACH May
Choosing an EHR Vendor With over 2,000 EHRs certified for Meaningful Use, choosing one can seem overwhelming for providers. Thankfully, NYC REACH has resources to help providers find the right EHR for their practice. There is no one size fits all EHR --- Only you can decide which solution is best for your practice through planning and careful consideration. Choosing a vendor can be daunting and takes dedication, but NYC REACH is here to help you explore your options! 2
The Selection Process Define your needs and EHR Criteria Narrow your choices Actively Shop Compare and Evaluate Choose! 3
Determine Your Specific Practice Needs Analyze your current work flow Efficiencies/difficulties How can an EHR help you with practice management? Initial appointment setting Patient check-in Establish your EHR criteria Increase practice efficiency Encourage accuracy Improving quality of care Improving care coordination for your patients Increase cost savings and practice profitability Patient moves to treatment Medical check-in complete Physician diagnosis of patient Orders 4
How to narrow your choices 1. Certification (ONC, MU) 2. Fully Integrated Practice Management System 3. Success with similar practice 4. Understand the EHR market in your region 5. Tap into personal relationships 5
Cost Considerations When choosing an EHR, it s important to consider the various costs associated with adoption. Be mindful of the costs that come with getting up and running on an EHR and maintaining your system! EHR Fees IT Costs Other EHR license Data Hosting Implementation Training Data Mitigation Hardware & Office network IT support (Implementation) IT Support (Ongoing) Billing clearinghouse Lost revenue during implementation/training 6
Compare & Evaluate Company Integrity Cost & Benefit Look & Feel Features & Functions 7
Considerations for Specialists Specialists face many of the same considerations while choosing the right EHR for their practice but there are several additional considerations they should keep in mind. While shopping for the right vendor, the following are some important factors to explore: Contact your professional society to locate resources they have for choosing the right vendor to fit your specialty type. Before implementing, make sure that the EHR you are considering has: Appropriate templates you will need for your specialty Testing functionalities that accommodate the specific tests you need to run If you are a specialist and have additional questions, make sure to contact your organization or NYC REACH to get the answers you need before moving forward. 8
Vendor Demonstrations To see the product in action, take part in a Vendor Demonstration! Your NYC REACH Outreach Specialist can help you set up a time to meet with different vendors so that you can see the different features of their EHR in person or via WebEx. Before your vendor demonstration, be sure that: All key members on your practice can be present. You should choose an EHR that fits the people who will be using it most! You are prepared to identify your practices needs Have a checklist explaining the features and specifications you are looking for Develop a typical clinical scenario ahead of time and have the vendor show you the process Ask to work through specific tasks (documentation, eprescribing, etc.) To be connected to a PCIP Outreach Specialist: Call (347) pcip@health.nyc.gov 9
The Selection Process NYC REACH Vendor Partners As the only Regional Extension Center housed within a health department, our mission goes beyond Meaningful Use achievement.
