1 Sustainable Small House Design Competition Guidelines
2 Background Secondary dwellings or granny flats are now encouraged in Lismore and Byron Shire residential areas. The Sustainable Small House Design Competition is an initiative of Byron Shire Council, Lismore City Council, the Green Building Centre and a number of independent community organisations that encourage sustainable affordable housing in our local area. Entries will be displayed and prizes will be awarded at the Sustainable House Day Expo on 13 September, Who can enter? Professional: Architecture and design professionals and students. Community members in Lismore and Byron: Anyone with an interest in sustainable house design. Young people 18 years and under: Enter your sustainable dream. What are the prizes? Professional category First prize: $1000 cash from UBIQ plus a one-year display of your business at the Green Building Centre (valued at over $2000). Second prize: One-year tradesperson membership of the Master Builders Association. Community category Lismore City Council area: $500 cash plus CAD 3D rendering of your design (value $600). Byron Shire Council area: $500 cash plus CAD 3D rendering of your design (value $600). Young person category First prize: $200 cash Second prize: $50 cash. Entries displayed to the public All entries will be displayed at the Sustainable House Day Expo at Bangalow A&I Hall on Saturday, 13 September They will also be displayed afterwards at Byron and Lismore City Council offices and libraries as well as the Green Building Centre at Byron Bay. Entry requirements Eligibility People and businesses living or operating in the Byron Shire and Lismore Local Government Area are eligible to enter. Entry Fee Entry is free. Closing date 5.00pm Friday, 15 August Where to send entries All entries are to be sent to the Green Building Centre at 1 Brigantine Street, Arts & Industry Estate, Byron Bay, NSW Any entries that are not received by the closing date will not be accepted. Call the Green Building Centre on if you need to deliver a 3D model or have any questions in relation to entering the competition.
3 Entry specifications Designs of secondary dwellings that have been built as well as those that have not yet been built will be accepted. They must be secondary dwellings, or granny flats, that fit in the site plan attached. Maximum internal floor area of 60m 2. Maximum estimated build cost $90,000, including any decks. Must address the Green Building Principles outlined below. Must be submitted in a format detailed in the section below. Entry formats Professional and community categories Can be CAD or hand drawn. Must be at 1:100 scale. Floor plan North arrow. Identify the dimensions of internal rooms, any decks and the overall footprint. Nominate the use of each room. Identify the location and width of doors and windows. Cross section. Elevations Building height. Ceiling height(s). Identify the width and height of each door and window. Detail the materials and colours used for the walls, floor and roof. Identify the location of the hot water system as well as any water tanks, solar PV panels and other services. Cross sections The materials and colours used for the wall, floor and roof, including the thicknesses and any explanatory notes. The type of insulation used throughout the building. Wall height(s). Roof pitch. Optional extras You may include a mini-model and photos if the secondary dwelling has already been built. Young person category (18 and under) Entries in this category can be more creatively presented. You can use A3 drawings, paintings or Google SketchUp as well as handmade mini-models, diorama etc. Don t let our suggestions limit your creativity! Site plan Entrants for all categories should include the following site plan as an A3 template to indicate the position of dwelling within building envelope as well as suggested landscaping (optional but recommended).
4 What is green building? Green building uses practices and products that are environmentally responsible and are resource efficient throughout its lifecycle. This includes a building s siting, design, construction, operation, adaptability, maintenance and demolition. It also considers liveability, affordability and durability. Building, renovating, and living this way: Conserves energy, water and other resources. Reduces waste, pollution and environmental impact. Enhances the health of those living and working in the building. Six Green Building Principles Each entry will be judged on how well it addresses the six Green Building Principles below: 1/ Siting and design Passive solar design is the first strategy in green building. Passive solar design means your house will be comfortable all year round in most climates whilst minimising the need for artificial heating or cooling. Avoiding west facing orientation, designing for natural ventilation, strategic use of insulating building materials and thermal mass as well as awareness of the capacity of different surface textures and finishes to capture or reflect heat are key elements to be considered in the siting and design stage. 2/ Reducing energy consumption Reducing energy consumption and living comfortably is the goal of passive solar design. However reducing energy consumption is also the focus of many other aspects of green building. Choosing materials with low embodied energy, using recycled materials, installing solar or other renewable power sources and using energy efficient appliances mean a further reduction in the carbon footprint of a building both in its construction and ongoing use. 3/ Reducing water consumption Water is a precious natural resource. Efficient use and recycling of water throughout the building and landscape should be considered part of green building practice. 4/ Reducing waste and toxic pollution Waste and toxic pollution of our environment are currently big environmental problems. Choosing re-cycled, non-toxic, non-polluting or natural materials, finishes and furnishings reduces the environmental impact of a building. These materials, finishes and furnishings are ideally considered in terms of their whole life cycle from manufacture and use, through to disposal or recycling and to be included in waste management plans. Training trades people to avoid waste and toxic dumping are also an important part of a green building. 5/ Liveability, durability and affordability Creating buildings that are healthy, durable and affordable for people to live and work in is a key consideration in green building. Here such things as insulation and passive solar design, good cross-ventilation, breathable materials and finishes that are mould resistant and free of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are important health factors that should be considered along with durability and affordability. 6/ Innovative materials, designs and ideas Innovative new products, designs and ideas that are ecologically and socially responsible and give high performance outcomes, inspire and motivate us. Incorporating these new ideas or contemporary remakes of old methods in a building creates a positive social impact and encourages the positive evolution of humanity in a sustainable direction.
