28 Hepatitis B Vaccine Page 12 CCSF shall make the Hepatitis B vaccination series available to all affected employees listed in the Exposure Determination. In addition, a post-exposure evaluation and follow-up shall be made available to all employees who are exposed to the HBV. 30 Common Modes of Transmission Hepatitis Sexual activity with infected individual Using infected, non-sterile instruments for such things as tattooing, ear piercings and razors Sharing IV needles Direct contact with mucous membranes like the mouth, nose and eyes Direct contact of infected blood with broken skin

31 Human Immunodefiency Virus - HIV A virus that attacks the immune system blood cells in humans and renders them less effective in preventing disease Infection eventually results in AIDS Symptoms include: Fever, sore throat, diarrhea, swollen lymph glands, loss of weight & fatigue

34 MRSA (Staph Infection) Strain of staph infection that is resistant to a number of antibiotics commonly used to treat it Causes serious skin and soft tissue infections and a form of pneumonia Starts out as small red bumps, but progresses quickly after topical symptoms

48 Employee Responsibilities PREVENTION DO NOT handle needles or sharps. NEVER THROW SHARPS IN TRASH CONTAINERS. Obtain the hepatitis B vaccine if you are at risk of exposure to human blood or high risk body fluids. Always wash your hands after removing gloves. Always practice STANDARD PRECAUTIONS when handling ALL human blood or other potentially infectious material.

49 Employee Responsibilities FIRST AID If needle puncture, laceration, scratch or broken skin occurs: Squeeze the puncture or open area to induce bleeding. Cleanse the wound thoroughly with soap and water. If a mucous membrane or eye exposure occurs: Irrigate the affected area immediately with copious amounts of water or normal saline for at least 3 minutes.

50 Employee Responsibilities REPORT IT NOTIFY YOUR SUPERVISOR IMMEDIATELY after the injury and completion of first aid.
