John 5:28 Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice, 29 And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation. Millennium a thousand years; the name given to the era mentioned in Rev 20:1-7. Easton's Bible Dictionary It is often difficult in many passages to see a clear dividing line between the earthly period of the millennium and the eternal state of new heavens and earth. General Note: We don t know if each thing applies to each person in every case. Today: Our Roles as Kings and Priests Revelation 1:6 And hath made us kings and priests unto God and his Father; to him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen. KJV NOW: 1 Peter 2:9 But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. 10 Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy. NIV In the OT these terms are applied to the Jewish people, Israel. Peter applies them to the readers of his letter, both JEWs & Gentiles V.10 Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God Opening Prayer 1

2 I. OT Types of Kings that Were Priests too Melchizedek, King and Priest Gen 14:18 And Melchizedek king of Salem brought forth bread and wine: and he was the priest of the most high God. KJV Heb 5:6 "You are a priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek." NIV King David 2 Sam 6:14 And David danced before the Lord with all his might; and David was girded with a linen ephod. KJV 2 Sam 8:18 and David s sons were cohanim. CJB 2 Sam 8:18 sons were priests. RSV High Priest, Joshua Turn To: Zech 3:6 The angel of the Lord gave this charge to Joshua: 7 "This is what the Lord Almighty says: 'If you will walk in my ways and keep my requirements, then you will govern my house and have charge of my courts, and I will give you a place among these standing here. 8 "'Listen, O high priest Joshua and your associates seated before you, who are men symbolic of things to come: I am going to bring my servant, the Branch. 9 See, the stone I have set in front of Joshua! There are seven eyes on that one stone, and I will engrave an inscription on it,' says the Lord Almighty, 'and I will remove the sin of this land in a single day. 10 "'In that day each of you will invite his neighbor to sit under his vine and fig tree,' declares the Lord Almighty." NIV Zech 6:11 Take the silver and gold and make a crown, and set it on the head of the high priest, Joshua son of Jehozadak. 12 Tell him this is what the Lord Almighty says: 'Here is the man whose name is the Branch, and he will branch out from his place and build the temple of the Lord. 13 It is he who will build the temple of the Lord, and he will be clothed with majesty and will sit and rule on his throne. And he will be a priest on his throne. And there will be harmony between the two.' NIV 2

3 II. JESUS, Our Eternal King and Priest Christ Jesus the Messiah was born a king (Matt 2:2) Died as a king (Mark 15:32) King of kings and Lord of lords (1 Tim 6:15; Rev 19:16). He functions as a King-Priest (Heb 5:6; 7:1; Rev 11:15) Jesus was Anointed (Luke 4:18, Acts 4:27, Acts 10:38) Luke 1:32 He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: 33 And he shall reign KJV Matt 2:2 Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him. KJV Luke 4:18 "The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me NIV Heb 1:8 But unto the Son he saith, Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: KJV Heb 4:14 Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession. KJV Heb 5:1 For every high priest taken from among men is ordained for men in things pertaining to God, that he may offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins:..5 So also Christ glorified not himself to be made an high priest; but he that said unto him, Thou art my Son, today have I begotten thee. 6 As he saith also in another place, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec. KJV III. Kings Ruler of a city-state, territory or nation Hebrew kings ruled as representatives of God Expected to know and do the Law of God He was to be a teacher of the Law The king was also the ultimate human judge Upon his head had been poured the holy anointing oil "the Lord's anointed." We will be kings. Rev. 1:6, Rev. 3:21, 1 Peter 2:9-10, Rev. 5:10. We are the Lord s Annointed ones in the earth. 2 Cor. 1:21 We will sit on thrones. Dan. 7:22 & 27, Rev. 20:4 We will judge men. Zech 3:7, Matt. 19:28, 1 Cor 6:2-3, Rev. 20:4 We will judge angels, Zech 3:7, 1 Cor 6:2-3 We will reign. Rev. 20:6, 22:5, Zechariah 3:7, 3

4 We will reign over some people? Rev. 20:4 & 6 We will rule nations? Gen 1:26, Ps 2:8-9, Rev 2:26-27 We will rule cities. Luke 19: Gen 1:26 Then God said, "Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over NIV Ps 2:8 Ask of me, and I will make the nations your inheritance, the ends of the earth your possession. 9 You will rule them with an iron scepter; NIV Rev 2:26 To him who overcomes and does my will to the end, I will give authority over the nations 27 'He will rule them with an iron scepter. NIV Rev 3:21 To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne. KJV Rev 20:4 I saw thrones on which were seated those who had been given authority to judge. 1 Cor 6:2 Do you not know that the saints will judge the world? And if you are to judge the world, are you not competent to judge trivial cases? 3 Do you not know that we will judge angels? How much more the things of this life! NIV Rev 22:5 There will be no more night. They will not need the light of a lamp or the light of the sun, for the Lord God will give them light. And they will reign for ever and ever. NIV Luke 19:16 "The first one came and said, 'Sir, your mina has earned ten more.' 17 "'Well done, my good servant!' his master replied. 'Because you have been trustworthy in a very small matter, take charge of ten cities.' 18 "The second came and said, 'Sir, your mina has earned five more.' 19 "His master answered, 'You take charge of five cities.' NIV IV. Priests: All Israel was originally chosen as a kingdom of "priests" to the Gentiles (Ex 19:6) Property of God Offer the morning and evening sacrifices Offering incense" (symbolizing the people's prayers, Ps 141:2; Rev 8:3) Lead the people in the 7 Major Feasts of Israel Like the King, "the Lord's anointed." Like Kings,The priests also were to teach the Law to the people of Israel. They were to act as a court of appeal in criminal or civil cases. Priests were magistrates as well as religious officers. 4

5 We will be priests. Leviticus, Isa 61:6, 66:21, Jer 33:18, Eze , Rev. 1:6, 5:10, 20:6 We will be learning about the Lord. We will worship. Rev 7:9-10 We will sing. Isa 52:8, Rev 5:13, Rev. 15:13 We will serve the Lord. Rev. 7:14-15, 22:3 We are the Lord s Annointed ones in the earth. 2 Cor. 1:2 We will celebrate Passover. Ex. 12:14, Eze 45:21 We will celebrate Tabernacles. Eze 45:25, Zech 14: We will celebrate the Sabbath, Eze. 44:24, We will celebrate sacrifices and offereings. Eze 44 and 45, Zech 14 Isa 61:6 But ye shall be named the Priests of the Lord: men shall call you the Ministers of our God: ye shall eat the riches of the Gentiles, and in their glory shall ye boast yourselves. KJV Ex 19:6 And ye shall be unto me a kingdom of priests, and an holy nation. These are the words which thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel. KJV Isa 66:21 And I will select some of them also to be priests and Levites," says the Lord. NIV V. Our Roles as Kings and Priests Both were anointed They were to judge criminal or civil cases. Both were to teach about the Law and the Lord Revelation 1:6 And hath made us kings and priests unto God and his Father; to him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen. KJV Rev 5:10 And You have made them a kingdom (royal race) and priests to our God, and they shall reign [as kings] over the earth! NIV Rev 20:6 Blessed and holy are those who have part in the first resurrection. The second death has no power over them, but they will be priests of God and of Christ and will reign with him for a thousand years. NIV Ezek 44:24 "'In any dispute, the priests are to serve as judges and decide it according to my ordinances. NIV 5

6 Conclusion: The name Priest or Cohen first occurs as applied to Melchizedek (Gen 14:18). The clothes which the priests wore also carried great significance. Their white linen garments symbolized holiness and glory. (Rev. 19:8 Fine Linen) Rev 19:7 Let us rejoice and be glad and give him glory! For the wedding of the Lamb has come, and his bride has made herself ready. 8 Fine linen, bright and clean, was given her to wear."(fine linen stands for the righteous acts of the saints.) NIV The priests were not distributed over the country, but lived together in certain cities they went up by turns to minister in the temple at Jerusalem. We will live together with the Lord. Joel 3:17, Rev. 21:3, Rev. 21:9-27 We will Live together with other believers, Rev. 21 (New Jerusalem) Rev 21:2 I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. 3 And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, "Now the dwelling of God is with men, and he will live with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. NIV Rev 21:9 One of the seven angels said to me, "Come, I will show you the bride, the wife of the Lamb." 10 And he carried me away in the Spirit to a mountain great and high, and showed me the Holy City, Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God. NIV Rev 21:23 The city does not need the sun or the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and the Lamb is its lamp. 24 The nations will walk by its light, and the kings of the earth will bring their splendor into it. 25 On no day will its gates ever be shut, for there will be no night there. 26 The glory and honor of the nations will be brought into it. NIV Rev 22:5 There will be no more night. They will not need the light of a lamp or the light of the sun, for the Lord God will give them light. And they will reign for ever and ever.
