7 Your guide to s Competence Based s (CBQ) Can you do it? Yes you can! To ensure an apprentice is competent within their field or job role an assessment is carried out both at the centre and in the workplace. The associated qualification is known as a Competence Based. Knowledge Based s (KBQ) These qualifications prove that you know what you are doing! Some s will include an individual Knowledge Based so that an apprentice can demonstrate they have acquired sufficient knowledge of the subject. Combined (CQ) It is also possible for an to have one Combined (CQ) which incorporates both the Knowledge Based (KBQ) and Competence Based (CBQ) requirements. and Responsibilities (ERR) Making sure that you know what you are entitled to ERR ensures that apprentices understand both their own and their employer s rights and responsibilities under Employment Law and other legislation. Sometimes ERR can be covered within the knowledge or competence qualifications, but Gateway s also has specific ERR qualifications for apprentices working in the Logistics and Health and Adult Social Care sectors and a more general one for other sectors. Learners can also complete ERR evidence via workbooks from the relevant Sector Skills Council or Standard Setting Body. The skills that underpin vocational competence and knowledge The minimum requirement for in s is English and maths at Level 1 for Intermediate (Level 2) s and Level 2 for an Advanced (Level 3). For some frameworks, learners are expected to complete an ICT Functional Skills qualification at either Level 1 or 2. Learners are expected to attempt Level 2 qualifications, even when the framework requirement is Level 1. Additional Employer Requirements Having the full package Depending on where an apprentice is going to work, they might need to learn some extra skills. These qualifications are not funded and usually cover training that is specific to the area of work e.g. First Aid or Health and Safety. Learning and growing in confidence When completing an Framework, each apprentice must be formally assessed against a set of goals relating to Personal, Learning and (PLTS). There must be an audit trail that demonstrates clearly where, how, when and by whom each apprentice s PLTS were assessed. Many of the qualifications in s are already mapped to the 6 PLTS, but another way of demonstrating this is through the use of one or more qualifications. Not only does this give the provider a clear assessment record but it also ensures the learners achievements in this area are formally recognised. Offering qualifications can help demonstrate to apprentices the value of these crucial skills. Gateway s has a suite of Level 2 PLTS qualifications which you can use at no additional charge where they are offered within a Gateway s Framework. The Gateway s PLTS suite includes the following six single-unit 2-credit Awards: Award in Skills for Independent Enquirers Award in Skills for Creative Thinkers Award in Skills for Reflective Learners Award in Skills for Team-Workers Award in Skills for Self-Managers Award in Skills for Effective Participants Also available is a 13-credit Level 2 Certificate in Personal, Learning and which comprises these six units, plus a 1-credit unit entitled Assessing Own. This unit can be used within the initial assessment process to help apprentices determine where their strengths and development needs in this area lie. Gateway s has developed a straightforward recording sheet for the PLTS qualifications which will enable you to record where, how, when and by whom the apprentice s PLTS were assessed, as required by the Framework, at the same time providing the evidence needed to gain the relevant PLTS qualifications. 7
