Follow along with tonight s presentation. What is the Diploma Programme? IB programme is for 11 12th graders Six different DP subject areas English World Language (French, German, Spanish, Chinese) History and World Religions Biology and Chemistry Mathematics Visual Arts or Music DP Core (CAS, EE, TOK) BHHS offers two ways for students to learn within the IB Diploma Programme DP Candidate Earns an IB Diploma plus a BHSD diploma Takes 6 DP classes Completes CAS Writes an Extended Essay Takes a TOK class Earns college credit for an earned full IB Diploma DP Course Student Earns a BHSD diploma only Takes any of the HL DP Courses (2 year courses) and the exams in May of 12th grade Earns college credit based on exam scores DP Students Benefit from a Cohort Experience Small Learning Community within a larger school Students with similar goals Collaboration, not competition Teachers that work together to help you students meet their goals Special activities that students do together Unique opportunities for a full Diploma Candidate Creativity Action and Service (CAS) Extended Essay (EE) Theory of Knowledge (TOK) While challenging, the skills, experiences, and ways of thinking developed differentiate full IB Diploma Candidates from other students entering college and often can grant further credit. The DP Core (see additional documentation included)
Successful completions of these 3 elements give 3 points toward the IB Diploma award process and often are recognized by universities in credit and admission. 1. Theory of Knowledge An interdisciplinary course that examines the ways of knowing and allows students to see connections between their classes, explore themselves as learners, and tackle a knowledge issue relevant in their lives. Structured through school Advisory lessons in S2 of 11th grade and as a class S1 of 12th. Assessed with a paper and presentation. Teacher: Mike Barry 2. Creativity, Action, Service Allows students to exemplify the IB Learner Profile in meaningful ways. Supported through Advisory throughout 11th and 12th grades. Involvement and completion is ongoing. Cannot begin until start of 11th grade. Coordinator: Sarah Lyon 3. Extended Essay This opportunity of college level research and writing ties together student's studies and interests in a topic of their choice. In some cases, students receive Composition credit at university. The Extended Essay process begins in the spring of 11th grade with topic selection and supervisor assignment. Students begin the research process over the summer between 11th and 12th grades. Extended Essay is the focus of Advisory during S1 of 12th grade. Students submit the EE paper in December of 12th grade and viva voces are held in January. Imperative that this essay be 100% student work without any outside editing! Coordinator:Becky Ossenmacher DP Assessment (see additional included documentation) Most DP External Assessments take place during May of their senior year and cover the content of the 2 years in DP. DP Internal Assessments occur throughout the two years of the programme. These are teacher designed tasks that apply IB assessment criteria. The IB moderates teacher marks for sample internal assessments and adjusts scores if necessary. DP Exam Registration begins in September/October of each year. Most exams are taken in 12th grade, however, SL History does test in 11th grade. IB Exam fees change every year. They are published each August. IB Registration Fee (was $164) IB Exam Fee (was $113) DP Exam fees are due before November 15th of the year the student is testing.
Exam results are available early July. Students continue to earn BHS letter grades. IB rubrics and scales are used to evaluate course performance when calculating points needed for an IB diploma. IB uses a scale of 1 7, with 7 being the highest. Awarding an IB Diploma 6 courses x 7 points possible up to 3 points for Core 45 possible points for an IB Diploma. Typically, a student with 24 or more points will earn an IB Diploma as long as they do not have any tests with a "1" and earns no "2" in an HL Course.* Students may retake examinations the following November. *See the DP General Regulations document for a detailed breakdown of the calculations made to earn an IB Diploma. Next Steps: Scheduling Next Year Look carefully at your student's goals in 11th and 12th grade to determine if he/she should be a DP Candidate or DP Course Student. Look at how universities you are interested in applying recognize the IB Diploma. Speak with current IB students or teachers and ask them about the classes they are taking or teaching. Talk to your student's counselor and/or IB Coordinator about your goals and interests. More info on our webpage:
The Diploma Programme Core Elements The part of the DP that makes it a unique and rewarding academic program for our students and staff is the incorporation of the DP Core elements. Beyond taking the six required rigorous DP classes, full DP Candidates also engage in the work of the DP Core. Universities recognize that a full DP Candidate is working on these engaging and empowering tasks in addition to the course work. Students often find that the work in these areas grant them credit for their writing, and theory based course in addition to credit earned from DP exams. Beyond that, the core is what ties the curriculum together, challenges students to apply their course knowledge in a meaningful interdisciplinary way and to consider themselves empowered to take action in their own lives. DP Candidates are supported in the Core throughout both the 11 th and 12 th grade years. We have a teacher coordinator for each core area who works with students throughout the year within the school wide Advisory curriculum. Seniors take a Theory of Knowledge course during the first semester of their 12 th grade year. In many cases, these core experiences become some of the most meaningful to students and distinguish their academic program selection from other students applying to universities worldwide. Extended essay The extended essay extended essay of some 4,000 words offers the opportunity for IB students to investigate a topic of special interest related to one of the student's six Diploma Programme (DP) subjects/disciplines. An extended essay can also be undertaken in world studies. The world studies extended essay provides students with the opportunity to carry out an in depth interdisciplinary study of an issue of contemporary global significance, utilizing two IB diploma disciplines. Both types of extended essay (single disciplinary and interdisciplinary essays) are intended to promote high level research and writing skills, intellectual discovery and creativity expected at university. They provide students with an opportunity to engage in personal research in a topic of their own choice, under the guidance of a supervisor (a teacher in the school). This leads to a major piece of formally presented, structured writing, in which ideas and findings are communicated in a reasoned and coherent manner, appropriate to the subject or issue chosen. Students follow the completion of the written essay with a short, concluding interview viva voce with the supervisor. In countries where interviews are required prior to acceptance for employment or for a place at university, the extended essay has proved to be a valuable stimulus for discussion. Theory of knowledge (TOK) TOK plays a special role in the Diploma Programme by providing an opportunity for students to reflect on the nature of knowledge, and on how we know what we claim to know. The fundamental question of TOK is how do we know that? Students are encouraged to think about how knowledge is arrived at in different disciplines, what the disciplines have in common and the differences between the disciplinary. TOK therefore both supports and is supported by the study of other DP subjects, as students are required to explore knowledge questions against the backdrop of their experiences in their other DP subjects. Discussion and critical reflection form the backbone of the TOK course, centering around discussions of questions such as: What counts as evidence for X? What makes a good explanation in subject Y? How do we judge which is the best model of Z? How can we be sure of W? What does theory T mean in the real world? How do we know whether it is right to do S?
Through discussions of these types of questions students gain greater awareness of their personal and ideological assumptions, as well as developing an appreciation of the diversity and richness of cultural perspectives. The TOK course is assessed through an oral presentation and a 1600 word essay. The TOK presentation assesses the ability of the student to apply TOK thinking to a real life situation, while the TOK essay takes a more conceptual starting point; for example asking students to discuss the claim that the methodologies used to produce knowledge depend on the use to which that knowledge will be used. TOK is a demanding and challenging course, but one which plays a crucial role in effectively preparing students for the complex and rapidly changing world they will encounter both during their DP experience and beyond. Creativity, Action, Service (CAS) CAS Creativity Action Service at the heart of the Diploma Programme. CAS enables students to live the IB learner profile in real and practical ways, to grow as unique individuals and to recognise their role in relation to others. CAS is organised around the three strands of Creativity, Action and Service defined as: Creativity arts and other experiences that involve creative thinking Action physical exertion contributing to a healthy lifestyle, complementing academic work elsewhere in the IB Diploma Programme Service an unpaid and voluntary exchange that has a learning benefit for the student. Students develop skills and attitudes through a variety of individual and group activities that provide students with opportunities to express their passions, personalities and perspectives. CAS complements a challenging academic programme in a holistic way, providing opportunities for self determination, collaboration, accomplishment and enjoyment. Students are also required to undertake a CAS Project that challenges students to show initiative, demonstrate perseverance, and develop skills such as those of collaboration, problem solving, and decision making. The school and students must give CAS as much importance as any other element of the Diploma Programme and ensure sufficient time is allocated for engagement in the CAS programme. Successful completion of CAS is a requirement for the award of the IB Diploma. While not formally assessed, students reflect on their CAS experiences and provide evidence of achieving the eight learning outcomes. (Explanations provided by International Baccalaureate Organization)
Diploma Programme Assessment Philosophy The International Baccalaureate (IB) assesses student work as direct evidence of achievement against the stated goals of the Diploma Programme courses. The Diploma Programme goals provide students with: a broad and balanced, yet academically demanding, programme of study the development of critical thinking and reflective skills the development of research skills the development of independent learning skills the development of intercultural understanding a globally recognized university entrance qualification. Diploma Programme assessment procedures measure the extent to which students have mastered advanced academic skills in fulfilling these goals, for example: analysing and presenting information evaluating and constructing arguments solving problems creatively. Basic skills are also assessed, including: retaining knowledge understanding key concepts applying standard methods. In addition to academic skills, Diploma Programme assessment encourages an international outlook and intercultural skills where appropriate. Assessment tasks are designed to support and encourage good classroom teaching and learning. Student results are determined by performance against set standards, not by each student's position in the overall rank order. Methods A variety of different methods are used to measure student achievement against the objectives for each course. External assessment Examinations form the basis of the assessment for most courses because of their high levels of objectivity and reliability. They include: essays structured problems
short response questions data response questions text response questions case study questions multiple choice questions (limited use of these). There are also a small number of other externally assessed pieces of work, for example, theory of knowledge essays, extended essays and world literature assignments. These are completed by students over an extended period under teacher supervision instead of examination conditions, and are then marked by external examiners. Internal assessment Teacher assessment is also used for most courses. This includes: oral work in languages fieldwork in geography laboratory work in the sciences investigations in mathematics artistic performances. Assessments are checked by external examiners and normally contribute between 20% and 30% of the total mark. Some of the arts courses, for example, music, theatre arts and visual arts, have assessment of a major practical component, which can account for as much as 50% of the total mark. 11 Class of 2018 Considering the IB Diploma Programme Are you eligible for the DP in 11 th and 12 th grade? Have you done well in English, Math, and Social Studies classes? Are you in Spanish, German, French or Chinese 300? Have you taken Biology and Chemistry (or) Physics? If you answered, yes to each of these questions you are eligible for a full IB Diploma. IB Courses by Subject and Teachers: Trying to fit a full IB Diploma into your schedule? Here are some tips: If you still need to take Government and Econ, consider taking SL History 12 th grade (non IB Music students). If you are looking at IB Art, it is recommended that you ve had some introductory art classes in 9 th or 10 th grades. If you are a music student, we recommend taking SL History in 11 th grade. You must also be in an auditioned group throughout 11 th and 12 th grades. IB Coordinator: Carrie James cjames@bloomfield.org
