6 Types of evidence Direct evidence Direct evidence is obtained when an assessor observes the candidate's performance and makes a judgement about whether the candidate has competently performed the required task or series of tasks. This observation could be conducted in several ways. For example, the assessor could observe the candidate performing a range of tasks in the workplace, and question the candidate; or observe the candidate's performance in a simulated workplace. Indirect evidence Indirect evidence is used when it is not possible or desirable for a candidate to be observed during their actual performance of tasks in the workplace; it may be too costly, involve risks or potentially breach confidentiality or privacy. Assessment methods used to collect indirect evidence could include examination of a finished product with evidence to authenticate that it is the candidate's work. Supplementary evidence Supplementary evidence is additional evidence supporting direct and indirect evidence. It is often obtained through third party sources, for example, from members of the candidate's work team or managers, work journals or evidence of completed training. Combination of types of evidence Usually, a combination of types of evidence is used to assess competence. It is commonly thought amongst training organisations that a variety of types of evidence, that is relevant to the unit of competence in which RPL is sought, provides the most valid demonstration of competence. Validity of evidence Evidence to support competence Documents to validate evidence must be written on the official stationery of the organisation of the person writing the letter clearly state the relationship between you and the person writing the letter include a description of your duties, responsibilities and other activities that are an integral component of the knowledge and experience to be considered for RPL include the length of time and the location/s where you performed the duties evaluate your understanding and performance of the areas covered in the document Documents Please supply copies of documents. ANMEC will retain the copies of the documents you submit. If you are attending a face-to-face interview, please bring the copies as well as the originals with you. If you are having an interview by phone, please send certified copies of all documents. You need to present an outline of content if using workshops or short courses as evidence. Tip Organise your supporting evidence in a folder with a label or divider which clearly identifies which unit of competency, element/s and performance criteria it is supporting. Remember Any piece of evidence may be relevant to more than one unit of competency, element or performance criterion. 6
