1 Mu tah University Faculty of Business Administration Department of Financial and Banking Sciences Course Description 2007/2006 Principles of Financial Management This course focuses on three key aspects of financial management, namely; investment decision, financing decision, and dividend decision after covering the nature, importance, and evaluation of financial management. The module, therefore, explores in general terms the financial analysis and planning including working capital management, cost of capital, and capital budgeting. Financial Mathematics This course concentrates on introducing the calculation of the simple interest, compound interest, amortized or depreciate the debt, and the financial securities valuation. Statistics in Financial and Banking Sciences This course introduces the data collection methods, sampling, processing, and data analysis including the measures of central tendency. It also covers testing the hypotheses, simple & multiple regression, correlation, and Analysis of Variance test. Financial and Banking Legislations This course aims to introduce Financial and Banking legislations and their importance in Jordan, which cover laws that deal with Corporations, Banks National debts.

2 Computer Applications in Financial and Banking Sciences This course aims to provide a solid knowledge on using the computer by practicing on the SPSS program. The course, therefore, covers dealing with File, Edit, View, Data, and Transformation menus. Moreover, description of Nominal Variables, Quantitative Variables, T-Test, Analysis of Variance, Regression and Correlation will be covered. In addition, the module aims to provide the knowledge of using Excel for calculating the Present Value, Breakeven Point Analysis, and securities valuation. Commercial Banking Management The course focuses on the general features of commercial banks, its objectives, roles, structure, money creation, and being part of achieving economy growth. The course, therefore, gives an overview of banks and their services, the impact of government policy and regulations on banking, the organisation and structure of banks and their industry, the financial statements of banks, and measuring & evaluating bank performance. It also provides a general view concerning specialized banks. Financial Sector and Economic development This course aims to enrich students with information about the role of financial institutions in socio economic development and their importance in financing different economic projects through channeling savings into economic development. Financial and Banking Information Systems This course focuses on defining the information systems in finance and banking, standards of developing and designing such systems satisfying information users and decision makers, the smooth flow of information among firm structure. It also provides the knowledge of managing the computer files, database, and control.

3 Banking Credit This course considered as an extension of Management of Financial and Banking Institutions where emphasis will be given on exploring asset-liability management by covering the issues; determining and measuring interest rates, controlling a bank s interest-sensitive gap, the concept of duration and managing a bank s duration gap, using financial futures and options, using swaps and other bank asset-liability management techniques. The course also covers the bank s investment portfolio and liquidity position, managing bank sources of funds, and loans provided to businesses and consumers. International Banking Operations This course focuses on the international Banking operations such as International drafts and Certificates, Guarantees, and risks involve in the international market. Money and Capital Markets Emphasis in this course is given to the nature of financial markets, roles, kinds, structure, and investment tools used. The course also discusses the intermediaries institutions such as market makers, speculators, and hedgers. The module explores the significance of financial markets in achieving the economic development and therefore the market efficiency, international financial markets, Asian financial markets, and Amman stock exchange Research Methods in Banking Sciences This course aims to provide a solid foundation for the final year project on topics related to finance and banking. Students receive instruction from their course leader on an individual basis,

4 including advice on research methods and technical writing style. Researches could be secondary, primary, or both and students expected to present their work in front of the students Case Studies in Finance and Banking Sciences This course aims to provide case studies in finance and banking enable groups to practice analysis, evaluation, and the ability in determining weaknesses, strengths, threats, and opportunities (SWOT) for each case in order to be in apposition where a rational decision can be made. Many advanced topics in finance and banking will be covered such as mergers, acquisitions, leasing, dividend policies, besides corporate value management Portfolio Management This course combines an advanced analysis of the modern theory of portfolio selection and management, with a thorough examination of the current capital market theory. The module, therefore, covers the risk and project appraisal, portfolio theory, the capital asset pricing model and the arbitrage pricing theory. On the managerial side, however, the module explores portfolio performance evaluation, international diversification, the process of portfolio management, and the theory of active portfolio management. Financial Analysis and Planning This course aims to provide a solid knowledge of financial analysis techniques, tools, and standards. So it covers the liquidity, activity, the profitability, capital structure, and coverage ratios. In addition, course covers corporate value evaluation, predicting the insolvency probability, and the attractiveness of company s shares. The module also includes financial planning by preparing pro forma cash flow statement, pro forma income statement, pro forma balance sheet, and

5 the capital budgeting. Moreover, the module studies the breakeven point analysis, operation leverage, and financial leverage. The last part of the module investigates financial analysis for financing, lending, and the new aspects in financial analysis of modern world. Financial Risk Management This module extends the "Portfolio Management" course by exploring the risk management aspects. Financial risk management is about balancing a processes and people. A company can survive and may even thrive if it has good people and bad processes, but it can not if the reverse is true. At the end of the day, a company's financial risk profile is driven by the decisions and actions of its employees. While risk management processes such as risk reporting and audit can provide useful, monitoring, it is more important to ensure that the right people are in place being with, and that they are motivated by the right culture and incentives. Financial risk management is ultimately about people. This module therefore covering financial risk management in context, framework, applications and a look to the future Specialized Financial and Banking Institutions This course aims to inform the students with information about these institutions, their characters, important role in socio economic development specially in developing countries. The focus will be on the necessity of these institutions in developing countries, with case studies about Jordan, Egypt, and others Financing Management ( Cr) The module covering topics such as financing resources management both; traditional and newly established methods. More over, the cost of capital and capital structure topics will be explored in order to provide the required knowledge of its calculations and decisions making. Dividend policy, borrowings company valuation, merger, and leasing will be covered too. Investment Management

6 The module covers the real investment tools, both; direct and indirect methods. In addition, the principle, of financial instrument valuation and strategic, especially in shares and binds markets will be investigated. More over, the principle, and methods of traditional investments valuation such as NPV, MNPV, IRR, etc. will be highlighted. The course also mentioning the problems related to investment, valuation and capital budgeting preparation. Islamic Banks The purpose of the module to explore the development of Islamic banking; function and activities following the Islamic banking approach. The module highlight, the source of funding beside its role in the country economic development. In addition, the module presents the kensiane and classical theories. Compared to the Islamic banking system. The relationship between Islamic bank, central bank, and other commercial bank, with investigated. International Financial Management The module covers the multinational corporation (MNCs) by exploring the foreign exchange rates markets, investing and financing MNCs. In addition international financial environment, cash flow, Eurocredit, Eurocurrency, Eurobond and Eurodollars will be highlighted. Financial Engineering The module introduces the interest rate structure and the financial instruments value sensitivity to the interest rate fluctuations. In addition, the modules covers other topics in financial engineering such as bonds market investment and risk management, companies restructuring, the merge between financial engineering and technology development, and other related topics. Graduation Project The module provide practical opportunity for students in doing academic research related to the finance and banking sciences with full supervision by academic staff in the department. At the end of the course, students presenting their research covering their

7 methodology used, hypothesis testing, empirical results, and discussion, and their conclusion.

Islamic Banks ( Cr Hrs) This course introduces the nature of Islamic Banks and their special features, their role in financing different economic activities with non bearing interest loans. Specialized Banks and Financial Institutions ( Cr Hrs) This course aims to inform the students with information about these institutions, their characters, important role in socio economic development specially in developing countries. The focus will be on the necessity of these institutions in developing countries, with case studies about Jordan, Egypt, and others. Advanced Topics in Financial and Banking Sciences ( Cr Hrs) This course focuses on advanced topics in finance and banking which include strategic decisions related to mergers, acquisitions, leasing, dividend policies, international financial management, besides corporate value management.
