1 Crystals and Crystal Shapes Objectives: Students will know that crystals are regular repeating patterns Students will demonstrate this knowledge by creating tessellations pages and three dimensional crystal shapes Grade Level: Sixth through seventh grade Subject Areas: Earth Science- properties of a mineral Timeline: Two 45-minute periods National Education Standards: Science Standard D - Earth and Space Science Science Standard G - History and Nature of Science Background: Prior knowledge for the students should include the properties of a mineral (solid, inorganic, found in nature, and has a crystalline structure). Teacher needs to have a completed tessellations page to use as an example and an assembled set of the three dimensional crystal shapes. Materials: Copy of Bob Joyce s Tessellations activity Copy of Bob Joyce s Crystal Forms activity Index cards Scissors Tape Markers/Colored pencils Cardstock- five pieces per group Examples of objects with crystalline structure (salt crystals, 3-D models, quartz, etc) Lesson: Day 1 Warm Up (in lab book) - Ask the students to list the four properties of a mineral (should be review from previous lessons)

2 Discussion- Talk to the students about what a crystal is and ask them to brainstorm examples of objects that have a crystalline structure. Show various examples and explain why they are crystalline. Also, talk to the students about what a tessellation is and show them the example of the tessellation activity. Activity- Tessellation activity designed by Bob Joyce Wrap-Up (in lab book) - Ask what a crystal is and what a tessellation is. Also, ask the students what their tessellation page has in common with a quartz crystal. Day 2 Warm Up (in lab book) - Ask the students the following question- What are two examples of objects with crystalline structure? Discussion- Discuss with the students some of the more common crystal shapes (see the Crystal Forms activity for information). Activity- Crystal Forms activity designed by Bob Joyce Wrap Up (in lab book) - Have the students write out their responses to the questions posed in item 9 of the Crystal Forms activity Extensions: 1. Have students research crystal structure and nanotechnology and explain how they are related. 2. Have students research how to make their own crystals (rock candy) and have them make crystals in the classroom. Evaluation: Collect the student lab books and provide feedback on their warm up and wrap up responses. 3 Addendum A Tessellations A tessellation is a repeated pattern over a surface without having any gaps or missing spaces. A common, everyday simple example would be a checkerboard comprised of repeated squares of alternating color. Matter is composed of atoms, which often arrange themselves into organized patterns based on shape and polarity. In the case of crystals, these patterns are very regular and comprise an orderly pattern based on the axis of the individual units aligning along these common axes. The first step to understanding these structures might be to create a two dimensional model, a tessellation. 1. Start with a shape that is simple and is known to tessellate such as a square or rectangle. 2. Take a square or rectangle piece of cardstock, such as an index card, and label the sides a, b, c, d, with a representing the top and working around the sides in a clockwise direction. Therefore, a should be the top, b the right side, c the bottom, and d the left side. 3. Draw an unbroken line from side d to side b the line can take any shape you choose as long as it is one continuous line that goes from one side to the other and does not cross itself. For your first attempt, you may want to keep it simple. 4. Cut the card in half along the line, being careful to create a smooth clean cut. 5. Lay the two pieces on a flat workspace as they were before the cut. Lift the bottom piece up and place the bottom edge along the top edge, i.e. place c along a and tape together. 6. Draw a line along the new side b starting in the lower corner and continue to the upper corner. Draw the line continuously, unbroken, and do not cross it. Cut along this new line. 7. Place the two pieces on the workspace as they were before cutting. Pick up and move the right side piece and tape it along the left side piece i.e. tape side b to side d ensure that when aligning to tape sides b and d that you place them so that the line created by the top and bottom, sides a and c connect or are inline with one another. 8. This new irregular shape while seemingly irregular should still tessellate. 9. Take the cardstock pattern you just created and place it on a piece of paper. Trace the outline of the pattern, and then move the pattern across the paper aligning with the last tracing. Then trace a new pattern. Repeat this process until the paper is full. 10. Outline, color, shade, or decorate these shapes, alternating the markings like the chessboard, or creating multiple markings of the same shape. 11. This activity demonstrates the concept of two-dimensional patterning the same way lattice structures create crystals with the same pattern, repeatedly growing upon itself.

4 Addendum B Crystal Forms Crystals grow along lattice axis in seven standard forms. The axes are the three planes emanating from the center of the form. Below are these standard forms. These forms are similar to the platonic solids, with the exception of the cubic, which are irregular. All matter that creates crystals uses one of these forms to do so. 1. Using the templates provided, transfer the template onto cardstock. This can be accomplished through tracing or gluing the template sheet to the cardstock. 2. Cut out the template, being careful not to cut through any lines. 3. Notice that there are some small areas that will be used as tabs or flash to ease with construction. 4. Fold/crease the cardstock along all solid lines. 5. Using the above drawings or some completed models fold and adhere sides into their proper order creating three-dimensional models of the crystal structures. 6. On a separate piece of paper sketch what your model looks like. If you are able to make a perspective drawing that is great, but if not simply draw what you see to the best of your ability. Remember to consider foreshortening, in other words draw your model how it appears and not how you know it is. 7. On your drawing, indicate where the lattice points and axis would occur. Remember, the lattice points define the shape of your solid model, and the axes should leave a facet perpendicular to the model. 8. Have students form groups. With identical models, have them arrange these models into larger three-dimensional constructs.

5 9. Have the students discuss how and why these models fit together. What makes them efficient, strong, etc? Theorize as to why these forms are used in nature by various matter. What connection to atomic structure might there be?
