1 ONCOURSE LESSON PLANNER FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS 1. I am unable to edit my plans. 2. Reports are not coming up, or come up blank, why is this? 3. I m getting an error message that says I have exceeded the 4000 character limit, but I don t think I did! 4. The homework I am adding is not showing up for my students, did I do something wrong? 5. When I logged in, my Lesson Plans were missing, or they are in the incorrect week, what happened? 6. How do I share my plans? 7. How do I export my plans to Excel or Word? 8. I deleted my Plans by accident; is there a way to recover this information? 9. How do I attach a Document to my Plans/Homework? 10. How do I insert images into my Planner? 11. How do I create a new template? 12. How do I load a template? 13. How do I copy and paste in the Lesson Planner? 14. How do I link a website to a Lesson Plan? 15. 2 I AM UNABLE TO EDIT MY PLANS. This may be happening because you have a pop-up blocker installed on your computer. OnCourse utilizes pop-up windows. To allow pop-up windows, follow the steps below: In Internet Explorer: At the top of the Web Browser choose Tools > Pop-UP Blocker > Pop-Up Blocker Settings Type and in the Address of Web site to allow box and click Add Click OK at the bottom of this window. In Firefox: In the Firefox toolbar go to Tools > Options > Content Click on the Exceptions button to the right of Block Pop-up windows. In the Address of Web site box, type in Click Allow Click Close Click ok

3 Disabling other pop-up blockers: If you have followed the steps above for your Web Browser and continue to have a problem, you may have another pop-up blocker installed on your computer. These programs include plugins such as the Google or Yahoo toolbars. Follow the instructions in the respective toolbar s help files or remove the toolbar by finding it in Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove it. REPORTS DO NOT COME UP OR COME UP BLANK This is usually due to a pop-up blocker or a problem with Adobe Acrobat Reader. Disable any pop-up blockers you have installed including Google and Yahoo toolbars. Follow instructions under I AM UNABLE TO EDIT MY PLANS section above. YOU HAVE EXCEEDED 4000 CHARACTER LIMIT ERROR MESSAGE When copying and pasting from Microsoft Word you may receive a message when trying to save the lesson that "You have exceeded the 4000 character limit!". It may also appear that you are no where close to 4000 characters. This is happening because Microsoft Word typically will copy a large amount of hidden characters do to the fact that it uses a different text formatting language. You can avoid this issue by clicking the "Past Plain Text" button on the OnCourse toolbar and reformatting the text in OnCourse. HOMEWORK IS NOT DISPLAYING Homework does not post on the calendar for parents/students until 2PM EST on the day it is assigned. Many teachers work on lesson plans several weeks ahead of time. This assures that students cannot see homework for lesson that have not yet been taught. This also allows teachers to make changes to homework assignments if a lesson was not fully completed during class. If you would like homework or projects to appear ahead of time, you can simply add them to the calendar as an event.

4 LESSON PLANS HAVE DISAPPEARED OR SHOWING THE INCORRECT WEEK If your Lesson Plans are missing or showing the wrong week, this is due to your temporary internet files folder on your browser needing to be cleared. To clear your temporary internet files: In Internet Explorer: From the Internet Explorer Toolbar, click on Tools, Options. Under the header Browsing history, click on the Delete button. Under the heading Temporary Internet Files, cick on the Delete Files button. Click Yes to the Are you sure you want to delete all temporary Internet Explorer files? Click Close Click OK

5 From Firefox: From the Firebox Menu bar, click on Tools, Clear Private Data. Check all boxes except Saved Passwords. Click on Clear Private Data Now button. Close and reopen all Firefox windows.

6 HOW DO I SHARE MY PLANS? To share your lesson plans: Click on the words Sharing on the left hand side of the lesson plan screen. Notice you have a personal Sharing ID # located in the lower section of the screen. Give that number to your partner and have them type it into the Sharing ID# box under the heading Teachers who can view my lesson plans. Click directly on the Add Teacher button. You will also need to enter his/her number in your screen. This will give him/her access to your plans. Follow the same procedure in the previous step. Next, log off and log back on to the website. In the menu toolbar on the left select your partner s name from the Change User drop down box. Use this box to navigate between your plans and your partner s plans. Enter your partner s Sharing ID# here. Click Add Teacher button. Your Sharing ID#. Give this to your partner

7 HOW DO I EXPORT MY LESSON PLANS TO EXCEL OR WORD? From your Lesson Planner, click on the Print Preview button. Click on either the Word or Excel buttons. Click Open Save document to your hard drive. HOW DO I RESTORE DELETED PLANS? To restore plans that have been deleted or changed: Open the block of the plan you want to restore. Click on the Undo Changes tab. Scroll through the list to find the version you wish to restore. Click the Restore these plans link. Click Save and Close.

8 HOW TO ATTACH DOCUMENTS TO LESSON PLANS OR HOMEWORK If the document is not yet loaded into the Documents tab: Click the Documents tab from the main menu Click the Add button on the Documents toolbar. In the pop-up window, click on the Select button to browse for the file you would like to upload. Click on the file you want to upload and click the OK button. Type a name for the document. Enter a category for the document. *Note: Documents are organized by category so you will want to assign your documents to categories for easy searching. Enter a Description for document (optional). Click the Start Upload button. Once the document is uploaded into your documents: Click on the My Planner tab. Click on the Link Document icon. Click on document you would like to insert.

9 HOW DO I INSERT IMAGES AND CLIPART INTO LESSON PLANS? In the Lesson Plan Block, click the Image Manager button. If your picture is clipart on the Web, enter the URL where it asks for Image URL if not, follow the directions below If you have uploaded pictures already, choose the picture here and click Insert If you have to upload the picture first, click the Upload Image button, then click Browse. Choose your photo, then click Upload. When the upload is complete, choose your photo, then click Insert.

10 HOW TO CREATE A NEW TEMPLATE Follow these steps to create a new lesson plan template: Open the folder on the left called Templates Click on the Add New button You will now have a new Template called "Template #" (You can rename this template by clicking the "Rename" button located above the lesson plan grid). Add all recurring info for this year's plans including period headers, column settings etc. Now, whenever you go to a new week, you will go to the "Load Template" dropdown on the new week and choose the name of the new template that you created. You template will be saved automatically. HOW DO I LOAD A TEMPLATE To load a template, simply click the Load Template drop-down box (shown below) and choose the template you d like to load.

11 HOW DO I COPY AND PASTE Copy and Paste a Week 1. Go to the week you would like to copy. 2. Click on the Copy icon in the toolbar below the date tab. 3. Use the calendar to select the week where you would like to paste. 4. Click on the Paste icon in the toolbar below the date tab. Copy and Paste a Block 1. Mouse over the block you would like to copy. 2. Click on the Copy icon in the floating toolbar in the upper right hand corner of the block. 3. Mouse over the block where you would like to paste the copied block. 4. Click on the Paste icon in the floating toolbar in the upper right hand corner of the block. Copy and Paste a Column or Row 1. Mouse over the column/row heading of the column you would like to copy. 2. Click on the Copy icon 3. Mouse over the column/row heading of the column/row where you would like to paste. 4. Click on the Paste icon

12 Copy and Paste Standards 1. Mouse over the block you would like to copy. 2. Click on the Copy Standards icon in the floating toolbar in the upper right hand corner of the block. 3. Mouse over the block where you would like to paste the copied standards. 4. Click on the Paste icon in the floating toolbar in the upper right hand corner of the block. HOW DO I ATTACH A WEBLINK TO MY LESSON PLANS Lesson plans will not obey the column with settings if there is a long string of characters without a space. Website addresses often cause this problem. This can be avoided by using the hyperlink manager feature in the lesson planner. Open the Lesson Plan Editor by click on a lesson plan block. Click on the Hyperlink Manager icon.

13 Enter the website address in the URL box in the link text box, type a short name for what you would like to call your link. Ex, Google Website Click OK Click Save and Close. HOW DO I PRINT A LIST OF STANDARDS Follow the steps below to print a list of standards: Open the lesson by clicking on the lesson plan box. Click on the Standards tab above the lesson plan editor. Select a Standard. Select grade level. Right click on the page. Select Print. COLUMNS ARE PUSHED OUT TOO WIDE If you have a long line of text with several words separated by commas without any space after each comma (example: word,word,word,word,word,word,word,word,word,word,word,word,word,word), the line cannot wrap and it forces the column out too wide. Please add a space after each comma and/or period and the column will size properly. Be sure that all website links are inserted using the Hyperlink Manager.

14 HOW DO I DELETE A SAVED PASSWORD? To remove your saved password: If you are using Internet Explorer: On the Internet Explorer Tools menu, click Internet Options. In the Browsing History section, Click on the Delete button. Click on Delete Passwords button Click Yes to clear previously saved passwords. Click Close and then ok. If you are using Firefox: On the Firefox Tools menu, click Clear Private Data Check Saved Passwords Click Clear Private Data Now. Click OK HOW DO I CHANGE MY PASSWORD? To change your password, click on Profile in the top right hand corner of your OnCourse screen. In the Change Password section, enter your new password and confirm it on the confirm password line.

15 HOW DO I ARCHIVE ADMINISTRATOR COMMENTS? Select Comments folder from Lesson Planner toolbar. Click on Comment you would like to archive. Click on Move to Old Comments button.
