1 UNIVERSITY OF JORDAN FACULTY OF MEDICINE DEPARTMENT OF PATHOLOGY, MICROBIOLOGY AND FORENSIC MEDICINE OUTLINES OF PATHOLOGY FOR REHABILITATION STUDENTS First lecture Chapter 1: Cell injury, cell death and adaptations, should discuss the following topics: Adaptive cellular mechanisms to stresses (hypertrophy, hyperplasia, atrophy and metaplasia). Causes of cell injury. Morphology of reversible and irreversible cell injury. Patterns of tissue necrosis. Morphology of cellular apoptosis. Second lecture Chapter 2: Acute and chronic inflammation, should discuss the following topics: Differences between acute and chronic inflammation. Causes of inflammation. Vascular events in acute inflammation (change in vascular caliber and permeability) Cellular events in inflammation (margination, rolling, adhesion,transmigration and migration) Chemotaxis and leukocyte activation. Mechanism of phagocytosis and microbial killing.
2 Third lecture Chapter 6: Neoplasia, should discuss the following topics Definition of neoplasia. Nomenclature of benign and malignant epithelial and mesenchymal neoplasms and misnomers. Characteristics of benign and malignant neoplasms (differentiation and anaplasia, rate of growth, local invasion and metastasis) Methods of metastasis (tumor seeding, lymphatic spread and hematogeneous spread) Mechanism of local invasion. Clinical aspects of neoplasia. Definition of grading and staging of cancers. Fourth lecture Chapter 4: Hemodynamic disorders, thrombosis and shock, should discuss the following topics: Definition and causes of edema. Definition and causes of hyperemia and congestion. Forms of hemorrhage (Petechiae, purpura and ecchymosis). Thrombus formation and morphology. Different types of embolism (pulmonary and systemic thromboembolism, fat and air embolism) Brief discussion of infarction. Fifth lecture Chapter 10 & 11: Heart and blood vessels, should discuss the following topics: Definition, causes and morphology of atherosclerosis and arteriolosclerosis. Different types and causes of arterial aneurism. Causes and types of aortic dissection. Congestive heart failure. Ischemic heart disease (myocardial infarction).
3 Sixth lecture Chapter 13: Lung, should discuss the following topics: Definition and types of bstructive lung diseases (asthma and COPD). Causes and morphology of bronchiactasis. Causes and morphology of pneumonia. Causes and morphology of bronchogenic carcinoma. Seventh lecture Chapter 15: Gastrointestinal tract, should discuss the following topics; Diseases of the esophagus (GERD, esophagitis) Diseases of the stomach (gastritis and its types, peptic ulcer disease and gastric carcinoma) Diseases of the small and large intestine (inflammatory bowel diseases including ulcerative colitis and crohn s disease) Acute appendicitis. Eighth lecture Chapter 16:, Liver, discuss the following topics: Types and causes of viral hepatitis (hepatitis A, B and C). Causes and pathogenesis of cirrhosis. Benign liver lesions (hemangioma, hepatic adenoma and focal nodular hyperplasia) Hepatocellular carcinoma.
4 Ninth lecture Chapter 12: Hematopoietic and lymphoid system, discusses the following topics Anemia of blood loss. Hemolytic anemia, discuss different types. Anemia of diminished erythropoesis (iron deficiency, follate difficiency and vitamin B12 defficiency). Different types of thrombocytopenia. Tenth lecture Chapter 19 : Female genital tract, discusses the following topics Inflammatory disorders of the cervix, vagina and vulva.. Discuss endocervical carcinoma. Pattrns of endometrial hyperpladsia. Endometrial carcinoma. Ovarian Tumors. Eleventh lecture Chapter14 and 18 :Kidney and male genital system, discusses the following topics Main diseases of the kidney: nephritic and nephritic syndrome, discuss their definitions and causes of glumerulonephritis. Discuss acute pyelonephritis. Renal failure and renal obstruction. Discuss prostatic nodular hyperplasia.
5 Twelfths lecture Chapter 20 :Endocrine system, discusses the following topics Discuss diseases of the thyroid gland (different types of thyroiditis, nodular goitre, graves disesase and hypothyroidism). Discuss thyroid carcinoma. Discuss types, causes and complications of diabetes milietes.
