2 ETSU sets you up for success You earned your military benefits, now put your GI Bill to work for you! Enroll and obtain your undergraduate or graduate degree from East Tennessee State University by selecting from more than 125 degree programs. ETSU takes pride in educating America s heroes! You have enhanced our nation s freedom, now enhance your education From combat to the classroom! East Tennessee State University has a long history of supporting America s veterans and that commitment continues today. Service Members Opportunity Colleges (SOC) ETSU is a designated SOC participant which simplifies credit transfers and streamlines enrollment procedures for veterans and qualifying family members. Veterans Upward Bound program Veterans have the opportunity to tune up academic skills at no charge. The Veterans Upward Bound program provides instruction in grammar, composition, literature, science, math and many other courses to improve academic skills for vets returning to the classroom. Military Service Credit Maximum credit will be provided for American Council of Education (ACE) accredited courses taken during military service. Credits obtained from the College-Level Examination Program (CLEP), Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Education Support (DANTES), Proficiency Examination Program (PEP) and from United States Armed Forces Institute (USAFI) will also be accepted. ETSU is Military Friendly!
3 ETSU sets you up for success Veteran Friendly School ETSU has been selected as a Military Friendly School for five consecutive years ( ) by G.I. Jobs magazine. The faculty, staff and students at ETSU thank you for your service and look forward to your arrival on campus or through online participation. Deferred payment ETSU has No worry payment methodology. The Veterans Affairs Office at ETSU will work to ensure your tuition is deferred until your GI Bill payments are made by the Veterans Administration which eliminates up-front, out-of-pocket expenses. Currently, more than 500 veterans and family members are using their GI Bill benefits at ETSU. Contact the ETSU Veterans Affairs office for the latest information concerning your VA educational benefits and find out what program suits your individual needs -- Veterans Lounge Your military service has earned you access to a unique place on campus where you can finish your research project or relax between classes. With 24/7 availability, and only for veterans and family members, it s a location where you can socialize and share experiences, facilitating the transition from military service to that of a college student. On-Campus Disability Services Many veterans are entering their academic status with service-connected disabilities that need to be recognized for veterans to be successful in an academic environment. From issues with parking, counseling, or classroom attendance, Disability Services will assess and assist those students with disabilities. Nearby Veterans Hospital A huge benefit awaits veterans attending ETSU through a unique relationship between the university and James H. Quillen Veterans Affairs Medical Center, which is a short walk from the main campus. Veterans can be seen for service-connected disabilities close to campus and in a timely manner. VA Benefits/Programs Veterans - whether active duty, retired, national guard or reserve - are those who, at one point in their life, wrote a blank check made payable to The United States of America, for an amount of up to and including THEIR LIFE. -- Anonymous
4 Financial Aid ETSU offers several programs to pursue your education at little or no expense. The Buc Hero program is unique to ETSU and it s our way of saying Thanks for your service and sacrifice. ETSU offers unlimited Yellow Ribbon scholarships, unlike many other colleges where Yellow Ribbon scholarships are limited. Out-of-State Veterans As a Yellow Ribbon participant, ETSU and the Veterans Administration can cover out-of-state tuition for 100 percent eligible, Post-9/11 GI Bill-qualifying veterans and dependents. Go Buccaneers! The Buc Hero program is an additional program at ETSU to assist veterans with out-of-state tuition. ETSU covers up to 60 percent of out-of-state tuition and fees for veterans or dependents not qualified for the Yellow Ribbon program. Out-of-State cost for online courses Active, reserve and guard military members can receive up to 100 percent tuition coverage when combining tuition assistance with the Buc Hero Program.
