Theme: World Vision 24 Hour Famine Title: Go Hungry for a Change Target Group: All Age: All World Vision 24 Hour Famine - Framework for School Christian Groups Maybe you ve heard of the World Vision 24 Hour Famine? As you ll see it s a great opportunity to do something positive for those who are suffering in our world and to make a real difference in your school community. If you ve never heard of it, then visit or call and order your 24 Hour Famine Pack. Then read the rest of this outline and begin to imagine what you could do as a school Christian Group to help change the world. Outlined here are some ideas and pointers on how to make the most of it. Why do it? To make a difference in the world. To put your faith into action by doing something for the poor and the oppressed in our world. To generate awareness in you school community of issues of global justice and poverty. To demonstrate a Christian response to poverty and injustice in our world by showing care and responsibility for our neighbours in poorer nations. To motivate others in your school community to care about the wider world and to live as globally responsible citizens. Options: what you could do. 1. You could simply do the 24 Hour Famine as a group. This would be a way of putting your faith into action and doing something costly to yourselves for the sake of others who have less. It could also help you bond together as a group, and would be good for you to do something that has a focus outside of the group. 2. If you choose to do the famine this way, there are plenty of ideas in the 24 Hour Famine Pack from World Vision to help you make the most of it. 3. You could do the 24 Hour Famine and get the whole school doing it as well. This would mean taking assemblies for the rest of your school, raising the profile of the famine through posters and notices, making sponsorship forms available for everyone. 4. You could get the school to officially adopt the 24 Hour Famine as one of its annual charities and ask your school to make this an official school fundraiser. It might also allow a non-uniform day in aid of World Vision.

5. You could do the 24 Hour Famine as part of a Random Acts of Kindness Day (see Random Acts of Kindness Outline in Archives 2005). 6. You could tie it in with your Easter celebrations in some way or with the theme of Lent. Very few people actually give things up for a full 40 days but they might consider doing a 24 Hour Famine instead. You can tie the Famine in with the message of Easter in your assemblies by highlighting the fact that Jesus death was a sacrifice for the good of humanity; and in a much smaller way we can each make a sacrifice for the good of others in our world. 7. Linked to any of these you could arrange a Fundraising Concert during the period of the Famine or at the end of it. If you have a long enough lunch time, perhaps you could have a local band come and play a set. You could charge a small fee for tickets or just ask for donations on the doors. 8. You could arrange an End of Famine Party get local churches to make some sandwiches etc, then arrange for a band or DJ to play. There may be some bands or DJs in your 6 th Form (if you have one) who would gladly play for nothing. 9. You can be creative and imaginative and think of other ways of making the most of the 24 Hour Famine. What to do first: 24 Hour Famine Information Pack. Get hold of the World Vision 24 Hour Famine information pack by visiting or by calling Packs are available from Christmas onwards. Watch the DVD/video. It s important to understand what the Famine is in aid of and be passionate about it yourself. Talk to other leaders. If there are other student leaders or influential students in the group it is worth sharing the idea with them before speaking to the whole group. If they are enthusiastic then it is likely that the rest of the group will follow suit. If they aren t, then take the time to examine why or whether there are other ideas they have. If any new venture is going to be successful, there needs to be agreement between the leadership. If there isn t, then it might be better to put your plans on hold and work on something you can agree on. Talk to your Christian Group. Next put the idea to your Christian Group; show them the video/dvd and see what they think. Try to gauge the response to this. There needs to be enthusiasm from the majority of the group for this to work. If people aren t really enthusiastic, it may be worth holding off and re-approaching the idea next year. Go Large? Discuss whether or not to go large and open it up to the rest of the school. It may be that you just target certain year groups or that you just do it as a group this year with a view to making it a bigger initiative next year. Bear in mind though that some of your group may have left the school by next year.

Develop an Action Plan Once you ve decided what you re going to do, you need to work out how you re going to do it and who s going to do it. 1. Fix a date. The official Famine Weekend this year is March 2005 but you can do it any time. It may be better to do it over a school day so that people are together whilst doing it and can encourage each other. One option is to do it from lunchtime to lunchtime: that is, you would have lunch as usual at school on Day 1 and then not eat until lunchtime the following day (so the famine would effectively be about 23 hours). Or if you re planning an End of Famine Party you might like to do it from 6.30pm on Day 1 till 6.30pm the following day when the party starts. 2. Come up with a Plan. Before you go to senior staff and ask for permission to do this, think about exactly what you want to do and what you want to ask them. It s often very difficult to get time to see the Head Teacher anyway, so you don t want to have to make a second appointment because you forgot to ask about some things the first time! Now s the time to plan exactly what you want to do and how you re going to do it. Be imaginative, but be realistic too. Better to do something small and do it really well than to try to do something massive and end up with a disaster. Bear in mind the strengths of the people in your group and make sure the plan fits the people. Who is able to take responsibility for which parts? 3. Write a Proposal. Proposal is the posh word for Plan. This is what you will be giving to the Head Teacher or senior staff when you ask them permission. The more it looks like you ve thought this through properly the more impressed they ll be and the more likely they are to let you do what you are proposing. If it looks as though you just scribbled a few thoughts down at break time it won t look so good! Type it up and make it look nice. 4. Speak to a Senior Staff Member. Who you speak to will depend on your school. It may be that you go straight to the Head. Or it may be better to speak to a Head of Year or Head of Department first. If there s someone who you know will be supportive, go to them first, show them your Proposal and ask if they have any comments. Take their advice. They may suggest tweaking your proposal a bit and then direct you to other staff you should speak to. When you go to these staff members, have the information from World Vision with you so they can see what the appeal is all about. You may want to show them the DVD too. 5. Timetable. Timing is everything it can be the difference between failure and success. Here s a basic timetable of when you need to be doing what. Obviously you don t need to follow this exactly and probably won t be able to even if you wanted to because you ll have to fit around other things in the school calendar. It s just to give you an idea and it assumes that your famine date will be somewhere near March WHEN? Early January Mid January Late January WHAT? Get Info Pack; watch DVD; talk with group; decide on a plan Talk to Senior Staff/ present Proposal Fix dates for 1) the famine itself and 2) assemblies beforehand to publicise it

Early February Half Term Late February/ Early March Get posters from World Vision or design your own Make arrangements for any events you re planning: tickets, venue, entertainment, food, adult supervision etc Prepare your assembly presentations Arrange copies of Sponsorship Forms Let Re:source know what you re doing and use the Helpline if you need any advice If you ve got all this done by half term you re well away! If you haven t then get together during half term to move things along. Put all your posters up Present assemblies. Ideally assemblies shouldn t be more than a month before the Famine because people will forget. But they shouldn t be too close either because people need time to get sponsors before the Famine. (see Assemblies below) Get sponsorship forms out (in assembly if possible) Sell tickets for event Get people excited Go round tutor groups to remind them or put reminders in tutor notices or both Pray Mid-late March Do the Famine, raise lots of money and enjoy yourself doing it! Collect in Sponsor money (see Money below) as much as possible before Easter holidays. April Finish collecting money and send to World Vision Announce in assemblies or tutor groups how much was raised. Display your thank you letter from World Vision Let us know how much you raised and how it all went! Other things to think about 1. Session Outlines. Included in the 24 Hour Famine Pack from World Vision are some session plans for Christian groups. During the lead up to the Famine it would be good to look at some of the issues surrounding poverty and suffering, as a group, and to look at what the Bible has to say about it. Sessions like this will help to keep your group focussed on why you are doing what you re doing and why it matters so much. 2. Assemblies. Assemblies are possibly the best opportunity you have to publicise the Famine and get people motivated to take part. They are also a great opportunity for the school to see who the Christian Group in your school are and what they stand for a great opportunity to be credible representatives of Christ. Depending on your school, you may need to plan an assembly that you repeat for each Year Group or each House. Or, if you can do a whole school assembly, you will only

need to do it once. This affects who is involved in each assembly. Some people might find it harder to present to their own year group or vice versa. You may just want to have a few involved who do exactly the same thing to each year group, or you may want to try to involve everybody. That s fine, so long as everyone knows when they re doing what, and so long as they are confident enough to do their bit well. The more people involved the greater the organisation required! Don t force people to be involved or make them feel bad if they don t want to. The main part of the assembly will simply be playing the DVD/Video and letting it speak for itself. To do that you will need to speak to your ITC department and make sure you have the necessary equipment: A data projector (video projector) A DVD player or a laptop that plays DVDs A laptop computer for Power Point (if applicable see below) Speakers or a PA system that will amplify the sound from the DVD All the necessary cables to connect these to each other You might also want to arrange for a microphone, so that everyone can be heard well If your ITC department can t arrange this for you, speak to your church and see if they will lend you the equipment. As mentioned above you may also want to create a Power Point presentation to be shown, before or after the DVD, in order to highlight when the Famine is taking place, and how to get involved. The rest of the assembly simply needs to cover the following: 1. Who you are 2. Why you are doing this you may want to use a verse from the Bible or refer to Jesus example 3. What you are doing the Famine itself and any other events that people can come to 4. When you are doing it 5. How people can get involved where to get sponsor forms, buy tickets etc 6. Why others should get involved your chance to motivate some people! You can be creative with this. One school presented all of that information in the form of a mock press conference, then showed the video. It worked really well. The most important thing is to be enthusiastic and motivated yourselves. Enthusiasm is infectious. You may want to give out Sponsor Forms on the doors as people go out, or you could put one on each chair before the assembly begins. You ll need to ask permission from a teacher.

3. Sponsorship Forms. Sponsorship Forms are provided in your World Vision Information Pack. Ask the school to photocopy as many as you think you ll need. If they refuse, ask each person in the group to see if their church will do 100 copies each or however many you need. Remember to change the dates on the form before copying it if you are doing the Famine on a different date. Also, you may want to use the back as a poster for anything else you re doing. That way everybody has all the information together. 4. Permission. It is a good idea to make sure that people doing the famine get permission from their parents/guardians. There may be good medical reasons why some people should not go without food for 24 hours. Also you don t want to get home and find a huge meal on the table because you forgot to tell them that you are not eating! 5. Money. As you start fundraising you will begin to collect money. Obviously you don t want to be carrying huge amounts of cash around school with you. And you don t really want to be taking it home at the end of the day either. You need to arrange a gathering point for the money. The best thing would be to arrange with the school for one of the following. 1. Arrange for all money to be paid into a school account as it comes in. Then all you need to do is take it to Reception. The school can then draw a cheque for World Vision when you ve finished and you can send it on to them. 2. Arrange for one teacher to be the collecting person. All money should be given to that teacher at the end of the day. That teacher obviously needs to have access to a safe. That way the money stays as cash and then you can arrange to collect it from them. Either way you need to keep a record of all money that comes in. Create a Fundraising Record Sheet on which you, Reception or your appointed teacher keep a note of how much comes in and from whom. 6. Events. If you are planning any events out of school time, you need to think about who will be responsible for them. If they are to take place in the school, then the school may well be happy to take responsibility provided there are enough staff there. Usually this is by far the simplest option. If events are to take place elsewhere, there may be more complications in terms of insurance, supervision and child protection. Make sure that you talk these things through with everyone concerned and have made all the necessary arrangements. And Finally Go for it! Your efforts really do make a difference. Please let us know how you get on. We d love to hear your stories!!
