1 AISD Library Media Instructional Plan Date: 12/14/07 Grade Level: 8th Campus: Nichols J.H. Lesson Topic: Revolutionary War Baseball Cards CONTENT AREA: U. S. History TEKS/TAKS OBJECTIVES: 8.23B, 8.30A, 8.4B FOCUS: Revolutionary War Period: researching a historical person to explain the roles he/she played during the Revolutionary War period. MATERIALS/TECHNOLOGY: Revolutionary War Baseball Cards Research project directions, assignment organizer, and information sheets. Library computers, online databases, Internet. FINAL PRODUCT: Revolutionary Baseball Card with facts, and picture of a famous historical person of that era. KEY WORDS FOR LESSON BANK SEARCHING: Revolutionary War, biography, baseball cards, United States history, Big Six, BigSix, Big6 Activity Description: (1) Day 1: A packet of materials is handed out to students. (2) Day 1: Students choose a famous person of the Revolutionary War from a list in the packet. (3) Day 1: Students come to the library (and bring the packet of materials). (4) Day 1: Librarian reviews the Big Six Research Steps. (5) Day 1: Librarian introduces (reviews) how to use the databases on the library webpage. (6) Day 1: Librarian discusses the proper way to cite their sources. Also shows them where to find the sources cited at the end of the articles on the Library webpage. (7) Day 1: Librarian discusses other sites with students: Dogpile, Wikipedia, and Google. (8) Days 2 and 3: Students come to the library and use the computers to research their Famous Revolutionary War person. Notes: Collaboration with a teacher should be done several months in advance. 2 REVEOLUTIONARY WAR BASEBALL CARDS RESEARCH PROJECT DIRECTIONS: 1. Research a famous person who lived during the Revolutionary War Period from the list. 2. Use at least two (2) references, (textbook, encyclopedia, internet, intranet, etc.). 3. Complete the Big Six Assignment Organizer and turn in for a grade. 4. Complete the information Sheet for this project and turn in for a grade. 5. Use the information to create a Baseball Card for a grade (Test Grade) Include information from your research form. Include an illustration of your person. Color it. Be creative!! Make it look as much as a baseball card as possible. The Library of Congress Prints and Photographs Division, Library of Congress
