2 GCSE Bengali (4635) Introduction In the new GCSE specification, the Bengali Speaking Test will be untiered to cater for students of all abilities. The flexible, unitised structure of the specification allows them to maximise achievement. Marks allocated to this unit are 40, the duration is minutes in total and the test carries 25% of the marks for the whole GCSE examination. Students will attend one session of between 10 and 12 minutes. This test will be conducted by the teacher, recorded and marked by an AQA examiner. The test will consist of two sections: Presentation and discussion based on a stimulus provided by the student and prepared prior to the date of the test. Students will be expected to speak for between 30 and 90 seconds and to answer questions on their presentation for a further seconds (up to approximately 3 minutes in total). The topic of the presentation may be drawn from the contexts published in this specification. Alternatively, students may prefer to choose a context of their own. 20 marks General conversation on 2 contexts of the student s choice. Students aiming at Grade C or above will be expected to express personal opinions, present information and show an ability to deal with unpredictable elements and to use a variety of structures. 20 marks Students may take into the examination room for this part of the test a cue card, containing a maximum of five short headings for each of the contexts chosen by the student. There must be no conjugated verbs or full sentences on the card. As students will have done their preparation beforehand, they do not need any preparation time before the test. Students must not have access to a dictionary during the test. No specified period will be timetabled for the Speaking Tests and centres are free to conduct them at any time. Detailed instructions for the teacher-examiner will be issued prior to the examinations. All tests must be dispatched to the AQA examiner on or before 15 May. 2

3 GCSE Bengali Speaking Test Guidance 1. Principles of the Test 1.1 The Speaking Tests are marked in accordance with the criteria for assessment published in the specification. 1.2 No allowances can be made for poor or incorrect teacher conduct of the tests. 2. Presentation and Discussion and Conversation 2.1 The Presentation and Discussion is marked separately from the Conversation. Each of the four categories (Communication, Range of Language, Accuracy, Interaction and Fluency) will be assessed. Marks will be awarded for the Presentation and Discussion and then again for the Conversation. NB: In the Presentation and Discussion the mark for Interaction and Fluency is awarded on the basis of the Discussion element only. 2.2 If the Presentation or Discussion is missing, a maximum of 4 marks can be awarded for Communication. 2.3 The marks awarded for Range of Language, Accuracy and Interaction and Fluency cannot be more than one mark higher than the mark awarded for Communication. 2.4 A mark of zero for Communication will result in a zero score for the task as a whole. 2.5 If a mark is awarded for Communication this will inevitably lead to the award of marks for Range of Language, Accuracy and Interaction and Fluency. 2.6 To score a mark of 4 for Range of Language the student needs to use a minimum of two verb tenses. 2.7 Examiners will stop marking the Presentation and Discussion approximately 3 minutes after the start of the test. They will stop marking the Conversation approximately 9 minutes from the start of that section of the test. 2.8 If a student speaks on only one topic throughout the Conversation, the examiner will find the appropriate band for Communication and then move down one band to find the appropriate mark. 3

The marks awarded for Range of Language, Accuracy and Interaction and Fluency must not be more than one mark higher than the mark awarded for Communication. 6 Student 1 COMMENTARY Presentation and Discussion The first part of the test is the Presentation, which is prepared beforehand by the student. The student clearly announces the subject of the Presentation as My Family and provides lots of specific details, which makes the examination interesting. Students can choose a context of their own or choose from the contexts published in the specification. Marks are awarded for the following criteria: Communication (7) The student is well prepared and conveys relevant information clearly on all aspects of the topic. She responds with confidence and develops many of her responses. The criteria for 4-6 marks have been clearly met and some of the criteria for 7-8 have been clearly satisfied. Range of Language (4) A range of vocabulary and a variety of structures are used appropriately. All three tenses are attempted and the student uses different adjectives in sentences to express her opinions and extend her answers. 4 marks are awarded for Range of Language. Accuracy (3) All responses are clear and there are no significant errors. Accent and intonation are good. There is sufficient evidence to award 3 marks out of 4 for Accuracy. Interaction and Fluency (4) The student responds readily without hesitation and shows initiative in fulfilling her tasks. Language is expressed fluently and the conversation is sustained at a reasonable speed. The student satisfies the criteria for full marks. 4 marks are awarded for Interaction and Fluency. General Conversation Students may choose contexts in the specification or can select their own. There must be no overlap of topics between the Presentation / Discussion and the Conversation. The topics are prepared in advance, hence there is no formal preparation time before the Speaking Test. The student chose Ramadan and Eid and My country Bangladesh, both of which relate to the context Home and Environment. 6

7 Conversation on each topic progresses naturally and the questions asked by the teacher-examiner are linked and elicit the relevant information. Communication (8) A good range of relevant information and points of view are conveyed by the student. Responses are developed and explained with confidence. The student shows ability to narrate events. 8 marks are awarded for Communication. Range of Language (4) A range of vocabulary and a variety of structures are used. Three tenses are used clearly by the student. 4 marks are awarded for Range of Language. Accuracy (3) All the messages are clear and there are no significant errors. Accent and intonation are good. However, there are occasional lapses in both pronunciation and accuracy, which prevent marks being awarded in the top band. 3 marks are awarded for Accuracy. Interaction and Fluency (4) The student responds readily without hesitation and shows initiative in fulfilling her tasks. Language is expressed fluently and conversation is sustained at a reasonable speed. The student satisfies the criteria for full marks. 4 marks are awarded for Interaction and Fluency. Total = 37 7

8 Student 2 COMMENTARY Presentation and Discussion At the beginning of the test the teacher-examiner welcomes and engages the student in a warm manner. The first part of the test is the Presentation which is prepared by the student beforehand. The student clearly announces the subject of the Presentation as My Family. Students may prefer to select a context of their own or choose from the contexts published in the specification. Marks are awarded for the following criteria: Communication (7) The student has prepared the presentation and conveys the relevant information clearly on all aspects of the topic. The student responds with confidence and develops many of her responses. The criteria for 4-6 marks have clearly been met and some of the criteria for 7-8 marks have been satisfied. 7 marks are awarded for Communication. Interaction and Fluency (3) The student responds readily and shows some initiative but some of the responses are brief and need guidance from the teacher-examiner. Language is expressed quite fluently and conversation is sustained at a reasonable speed. 3 marks are awarded for Interaction and Fluency. General Conversation Students may choose contexts published in the specification or they can choose their own. There is no overlap of topics between the Presentation / Discussion and the Conversation. The topics are prepared in advance, hence there is no formal preparation time before the Speaking Test. The student has chosen contexts from the Home and Environment in the specification. 8
