ShopKeep Small Business Index Q Letter from Norm Merritt President & co-ceo We are pleased to share the first ShopKeep Small Business Index, a quarterly report that provides valuable insight into the prevailing opinions, hopes and concerns of independent business owners in the United States and Canada (our customer base). The findings in this index cover a variety of areas that affect our customers, including the economy, business health, technology and data security and marketing. To compile this index, we surveyed ShopKeep customers and included their same store sales. The feedback we gathered revealed a great deal of optimism for the upcoming holiday season. Based on our survey results, almost 70% of business owners expect this holiday season to be profitable and nearly 60% of merchants expect holiday sales to be better than the same period last year. The findings revealed a brewing confidence among small businesses with many expanding their inventory during the second quarter and increasing headcount to accommodate for the busy holiday season. Additionally, it s clear that businesses with websites, those that embrace social media and those that use marketing are more optimistic for the holiday period because they have more opportunities to connect with their loyal customers and reach new ones. While it s great to see this overriding optimism toward the fourth quarter - one of the busiest times of the year - for their businesses there seems Contents 1 Letter from Norm Merrit 3 Healthy Economy 7 Strong Business Outlook 8 Technology & Data Security 9 Focused on Marketing 10 Client Case Study: Boom Juice to be a lack of clarity when it comes to the advent of contactless payment systems and chip card technology.
2 Letter from Norm Merritt President & co-ceo With the launch of Apple Pay earlier this year and the nationwide liability shift with the introduction of chip cards late next year, business owners are being inundated with a lot of information. Sixty -three percent of ShopKeep s merchants are concerned about the security of their customers credit or debit card payment information. Most cite using ShopKeep as their way of safeguarding themselves and their customers against fraud. While we are pleased with the confidence our merchants have in our system, we recognize the need to provide our customers with additional information on these new payment technologies. Our survey results also show that our younger, more technologically savvy merchants have the most optimism for the holiday sales season and confidence in ShopKeep s systems to keep their customers information safe and secure. Small businesses are the core of the economy, and studies have shown that spending locally generates almost four times as much economic benefit for the surrounding community than spending at chain stores. At ShopKeep, our goal is to ensure that business owners have the information, resources and data they need to reap those benefits and compete with their larger counterparts to be successful. Everything we do is about small businesses; our mission is to help business owners run a smarter business. Methodology ShopKeep compiled the ShopKeep Small Business Index by using its customers same store sales and data from a survey of 5,540 randomly selected small business owners living in the United States and Canada in October Of those selected for the survey, 657 responses were received a response rate of 12 percent.
3 Healthy Economy We ve come a long way since the 2008 economic downturn, and merchants are starting to feel like business is booming again. Sixty- eight percent of ShopKeep customers are confident in their businesses and expressed optimism for the upcoming holiday season. Survey respondents indicated that sales growth, increased headcount, the size of their business and overall health of their finances are among the reasons they feel optimistic about the upcoming holiday season. This confidence among respondents is in line with optimism across US retail operations as consumer confidence reaches a seven -year high and retail sales are poised to increase nationwide. Almost 80% of those surveyed expect their seasonal sales to be better than or the same as last year, supporting the National Retail Federation s forecasting that holiday sales will increase by 4.1% this year. Hiring seasonal employees is another indication of a positive outlook for the holidays. APPLY TODAY 81% 9% 6% 4%
4 Additionally, in reviewing ShopKeep users same store sales, we noted trends that further indicate economic growth and growing consumer confidence. Overall, ShopKeep customers saw a 12% increase in sales, a 6.5% increase in the total number of transactions and a 5.4% increase in transaction size. Looking closely at different kinds of businesses from the second to the third quarter, clothing stores and recreation/ entertainment saw significant growth. 3 Recreation / Entertainment Clothing Stores There was a 43% increase in the number of sales in this sector and the Similarly, transactions at these retailers increased by 10%. average sales size increased by 7%.
5 Across specific business types: Recreation / Entertainment sales increased by 5.9% Quick Service Restaurants increased by 14.1% Mobile Food Vendors increased by 23.6% According to the United States Census Bureau, on Flowers average, businesses (excluding motor parts and vehicles) grew 3.9% year- over -year, but ShopKeep merchants sales increased on average by 12.5% - Full Service Restaurants increased by 10.6% more than three times the national average.
6 Despite these economic gains, business owners still find it difficult to obtain funding on their own. Thirty -eight percent of respondents who applied for a small business loan during the second quarter said getting a loan was no easy feat, and 49% were not sure if the process was easier or not. Respondents who have applied for a small business loan: 12% Yes Say they think it is easy. 39% No Say they don t think it is easy. 49% Unsure Say they are not sure if it is easy or not. Unfortunately, this sentiment is echoed by many business owners across the country. We ve found that partnering with organizations, such as Fundwell or Fundera, that have lender networks, provide access to capital and make the process of applying for and receiving small business loans much easier.
7 Strong Business Outlook ShopKeep merchants have a positive overall business outlook; 75% of them experienced higher or the same sales volume in the third quarter and 40% believe the fourth quarter will be a good time for businesses to expand sustainably and make capital expenditures on equipment, remodeling and new locations. Additionally, 52% of ShopKeep users saw an increase in inventory over the last three months. This growth will continue into the new year as 36% of our customers look to make capital expenditures in the next six months to expand their businesses. Inventory growth over the last three months: 52% 15% 32% Higher Growth Lower Growth About the Same Based on business performance, ShopKeep business owners feel they have an accurate amount of inventory and 65% plan to maintain current headcount to foster continued growth..
8 ShopKeep business owners have the following number of employees: % 23% 15% 19% Technology & Data Security On average, ShopKeep merchants understand the benefit that technology can provide for their businesses. Sixty- eight percent of our customers are between the ages of 25 and 45 and tend to be more technologically savvy than their older counterparts. Almost 80% of ShopKeep businesses are run on a tablet, which marks a shift in the business operations mentality. Additionally, these businesses offer: Mobile apps 8% Digital signage 11% Product scanners 18% Mobile payments 31%
9 When it comes to data security, 50% believe that NFC will have an impact on their business because it s easy to use, transactions will be completed faster, it s more secure and consumers will have more excuses to shop. Similarly, 41% of ShopKeep users believe that chip cards will put consumers at ease for security concerns. While business owners see the benefits, they are keenly aware of the costs associated with upgrading and the potential increase in transaction times that could result with this new payment type. ShopKeep merchants cite taking full advantage of cloud storage, securing their networks and frequently updating passwords (in addition to relying on ShopKeep) as a means of addressing security concerns. Focused on Marketing ShopKeep business owners understand the power of marketing to drive traffic to their businesses. With little money to spend on advertising, they leverage different tools to engage their current customers and acquire new ones. For example, our survey revealed that 91% of ShopKeep users do their own marketing, and the majority of their marketing is overwhelmingly done via social media (94%) with more than two -thirds using Facebook as the vehicle of choice. We also saw that a number of users are still using (48%) or direct mail (16%) to connect with their customers. When it comes to holiday marketing, 51% of ShopKeep businesses are spending the same amount as last year or more, specifically for: Fundraising Gift Packaging Promotions Costume Contests Holiday Parties
