1 Outline: The children will be making some Jungle animals crafts. Paper Bag Lion Puppet This is a fun and easy cut and paste paper craft that uses a paper bag as a base to make a puppet. You can omit template 3 (the mane) for a female lion. Tasha, Age 8 Sarah Instructions: 1. Print out the template of choice. 2. Colour the pieces as appropriate and cut them out. (cutting may require adult assistance and can be pre-done). 3. OPTIONAL: instead of printing template 3, cut the 1/2 circles out of orange or brown felt.

2 GET FAMILIAR WITH YOUR PAPER BAG: I'm going to walk through this slowly, so try not to giggle at me. See the picture above for how the puppet should look when complete. 1. Look at your paper bag. It should be closed and flat like a piece of paper. Just like when they are brand new. 2. On one side, it's all smooth. This will be the BACK of your puppet 3. It's important that all the kids get the back and front straight at the beginning! 3. On the other side there's a floppy tab (which is typically the bottom of the bag when you're carrying your lunch around...) 4. This floppy tab will be the HEAD Lift the floppy tab up a bit. Underneath of the tab will be the mouth, 5. When the child put's her hand in the bag, she'll be able to make the puppet talk. Look at the rest of the front of the bag. (The 3/4 or so of the bag below the part with the floppy tab) This will be the BODY. Look at the sides of the bag. There should be a FLAP of paper. 6. We'll be slipping the arms into this flap, though it isn't a big deal if they glue them right to the front of the body. OK, now that we're comfy with our bags, let's craft! PUTTING IT TOGETHER: 1. If desired, paint the paper bag yellow and let dry completely. Instead of painting, you could trace the bag onto a piece of yellow construction paper and glue it onto the back. 2. Trace again, this time making it short enough to fit under the floppy tab and glue onto the front. 3. Print the template of choice and colour in the pieces, as necessary. 4. Cut out the template pieces

3 1. Glue the first half circle (TEMPLATE 3) underneath the floppy tab 2. Glue the other half circle (TEMPLATE 3) onto the back 3. of the paper bag so the edge lines up with the first 4. half circle (to form a complete circle for the lion's mane). 5. Skip the above two steps (the ones using template 3) to make a female lion. 6. Lift the flap/snout and glue the tongue on underneath it. 7. Glue the nose, eyes and ears onto the front of the floppy tab to make the face. 8. Glue the arms (TEMPLATE 2) onto the bag. OPTIONAL: wrap some wool around your fingers to make a tassel. Attach the tassel onto a 'tail length' piece of wool and tape that to the back of the bag.

4 DLTK's Holiday Activities for Kids: Lion Mask Craft This is a cute but very simple craft. I think it would be a nice one for younger kids to make for Halloween if they're not really into wearing a big fancy costume (both my girls were like that at age 2). It would also be nice for a class or daycare to make for a jungle or circus party. They could parade around like lions and sing songs/rhymes like "Going on a Lion Hunt". It's fun to do with the flower mask or sunshine mask too. Instructions: 1. Cut rectangles out of construction paper. I make them about 4 inches long and an inch or two wide. 2. You can decorate the rectangles with markers or sparkles to make the craft a bit more complicated. 3. Have an adult cut the centre out of the paper plate so the child's head becomes the centre of the mask. 4. Roll one of the rectangles of construction paper around a pencil to make it curly 5. Glue the curled rectangles all the way around the edge - we alternated making a pattern -- patterning is a good exercise for young children). Optional: Cut a couple of triangles for ears out of construction paper. 6. Glue on a popsicle stick or unsharpened pencil as a handle (you might want to add a bit of tape to reinforce). Now the child can peek through the lion mask!

5 MAGNIFICENT MASKS Materials required: Paper Printer Markers or Crayons Scissors Stapler Elastic about 1 foot per mask 1. Colour the mask. 2. Cut it out around the edges, then cut out the eye-holes. 3. Staple one end of the elastic onto the mask (the places for the staples are marked and are by the eyes). 4. Determine how much elastic it will take to fit on your child's head. Trim to size. 5. Staple the remaining side of the elastic to the other side of the mask.

6 SPIRAL SNAKE Spiral Snake Craft This cute snake is a simple craft. It is made from a single piece of coloured construction paper (or white paper that you decorate). Materials required: A piece of green (or other coloured) construction paper Crayons or markers Scissors Tape String On a piece of construction paper, draw a spiral. The center of the spiral will be the head, so draw an oval-shaped area in the center of the spiral. Cut along the spiral lines you drew. Draw a face on your snake (optional: glue on googly eyes). Decorate the body of your snake to look like patterned snake skin. To display your snake, tape a length of string to the snake's head. You can hang the snake from the ceiling or from a curtain rod.
