2 The INSTITUTE OF URBAN DEVELOPMENT (IRM) continues the research and development activities of the Institute of Housing Economy and the Kraków Branch of the Institute of Spatial and Municipal Economy. The scope of research, development and implementation works conducted by the Institute of Urban Development includes the areas which are especially essential from the viewpoint of the development of our country, especially in the contexts of regional development, European territorial cohesion and the principles of sustainable development. Especially important areas of our research, associated with fundamental social needs, are the issues of spatial economy, including spatial planning, urban development management, environmental protection and housing. Our Institute co-operates with a number of colleges and universities in Kraków, Warszawa and Poznań, as well as other research and development centres, public authorities and organisations of practitioners and associations of local governments. Our Institute maintains contacts and collaborates under EU Projects with many foreign institutions and universities, as well as such organisations as: METREX (The Network of European Metropolitan Regions and Areas), ENHR (The European Network for Housing Research), ENTP (European New Towns Platform), IFHP (International Federation for Housing and Planning), INTA (International Urban Development Association), ECTP (The European Council of Spatial Planners), EUKN (The European Urban Knowledge Network) and UN-Habitat (The United Nations Human Settlements Programme). The Institute's achievements include, among others, research projects (grants and tasks carried out within our statutory activities), research and development works and project implementations. The basic selected objectives of the Institute's works are the following: Identification of basic tendencies in urban development processes in Poland on the background of the transformations that occur in the European space and selected global trends. Indication of key areas for managing the urban development processes, including urban renewal in Poland, to attain improvement of territorial cohesion and increase of competitiveness of the Polish space, taking into account the principles of sustainable development. Indication of the directions of activities designed for increasing the effectiveness of urban development management processes and determination of the sets of instruments that allow to solve the spatial management problems, using the experiences of the EU countries in the areas of urban management standards and methods. Active inclusion of Poland in shaping and transforming of the European space, including contribution to the European spatial order. The INSTITUTE OF URBAN DEVELOPMENT was founded in November 2002 as a result of the integration of the Kraków Branch of the Institute of Spatial and Municipal Economy and the Institute of Housing Economy. The research traditions of both former Institutes go fifty years back. The supervising authority of the Institute of Urban Development (IRM) is the Polish Ministry of Infrastructure.

5 International Co-operation The Institute of Urban Development (IRM) continues its rich traditions of co-operation with our foreign partners owing to our participation in EU framework, structural, pilot, training programmes, as well as in specific projects conducted with our foreign partners. Presently, our Institute has been participating in seven INTERREG III Projects: III B Cadses: REPUS "Strategy for a Regional Polycentric Urban System in Central-Eastern Europe Economic Integrating Zone" Planet CenSE "PLAnners NETwork for CENtral and South East Europe" Carpathian Project "Protection and sustainable development of the Carpathians in a trans-national framework" CoUrbIT Project "Complex Urban Investment Tools" III C WEST ZONE: InterMETREX "Metropolitan spatial planning practice" Knowledge Network "Knowledge Network, Governance in Action" III C SOUTH ZONE: PolyMETREXplus "Polycentric Metropolitan Europe" Our Institute also serves as a Contact Point of the EUKN "European Urban Knowledge Network" Pilot Project. The Institute of Urban Development is a member of international consortiums which participate in the EU research projects, and the Institute's intention is to increase its presence in research projects that are carried out by the European Union, United Nations and other international organisations. The Institute of Urban Development organises topical national and international conferences and seminars.
